When scientists put them under the sea, the result was terrific. All the real fish behaved naturally towards them. These fish robots could move like fish and change directions randomly. The scientists are now planning to add more real fish’s behavior to those fish robots.
Lifesaver Drones
Every year, many people die from shark attacks. The creators of lifesaver drones will make sure that the drone can spot any shark in the water. After detecting the shark, the drone will then search if there is any swimmer near the creature. If the shark tries to attack, it will rescue the swimmer and then take him to the dry land. Ice hockey, including Para ice hockey (残奥会冰球), has been recognized by some as a “men’s sport” as it is a full-contact sport that involves lots of body checks. But on the International Women’s Day, many fans at the National Indoor Stadium waited for a female to get on the ice. And there she came.
By the end of the second period of the Para ice hockey game between China and Italy at the Beijing Paralympic Winter Games, Yu Jing of China was called onto the ice. Without any goal or assist, Yu completed her debut “I think I did really well today,” said Yu with a bunch of flowers in her hands after the game. “This is a perfect gift for me on this special day.”
Poliomyelitis (小儿麻痹) caused disability in her left leg when Yu was very little, but it never stopped her passion for sports. In 2019, Yu took up Para ice hockey. However, the blade that supports the sledge is only three centimeters wide, which is very difficult for beginners to maintain their balance. But Yu was able to sit firmly on the sledge and slid slowly with the sticks the first time on the ice. “I got the confidence immediately,” Yu recalled, adding that fighting for her country on home soil was her biggest incentive.
All the injuries and difficulties didn’t stop Yu from chasing her Para ice hockey dream. She quit her job and turned professional at 36 years old. During training, Yu’s teammates encouraged her and taught her the skills. “Para ice hockey is a mixed competition that opens a door to females with disabilities. If males can do it, so can females,” Yu said. As the only female Para ice hockey player at Beijing 2022, the goal of inspiring more females with disabilities has already been accomplished.

During the pandemic, masks and other forms of personal protective equipment (PPE) have become familiar fixtures of our daily lives. They have helped ensure the safety of ourselves and our loved ones. Yet, the improper disposal of PPE has contributed to a hazardous trend — the accumulation of medical waste and the littering of our planet.
Every month, we use nearly 129 billion masks. In a recent report, the United Nations found that from March 2020 to November 2021, around 87,000 tons of used masks and gloves have become non-disposable waste.
This is very worrying, as the waste traps animals and affects the health of our communities. When not properly discarded (丢弃), PPE waste may be blown into local rivers and streams or mistaken by birds as materials for building nests. It is harmful to the environment because most PPE is made from plastic fibers. These fibers can never fully degrade, and instead, break down into microplastics and nanoplastics that linger in our oceans.
At present, many healthcare facilities do not have systems that can deal with the increasing amount of medical waste. As a result, facilities have resorted to burning medical waste. This can put healthcare workers at a higher risk of catching the disease, and communities near landfills (废弃物品填埋场) can be influenced by the poisonous air from the burn pits.
Instead of traditional masks, the United Nations recommends using safe, biodegradable masks or washable cloth masks as an alternative. Sealing used masks and gloves in a separate bag and cutting mask straps before throwing them away can also prevent PPE from ending up in unintended locations, such as sewage systems on streets.
However, it is important to note that masks should not be placed in household recycling bins because most garbage collection systems in cities are unable to dispose of the materials. Ultimately, knowing how to responsibly discard our PPE can help us not only protect the environment but also ourselves and other individuals in our community.
28. What does the underlined word “hazardous” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Welcome. B. Clear. C. Dangerous. D. Gradual.
29. What do we know about medical waste
A. Its amount is decreasing on an annual basis.
B. Its fibers can permanently stay in the ecosystem.
C. It can be burned by healthcare workers without pollution.
D. It can be degraded by the majority of healthcare facilities.
30. What can we learn from the recommendations from the UN
A. The components of the used masks should be recycled.
B. The used masks should be mixed with household trash.
C. The raw material of traditional masks should be reconsidered.
D. The community should build sewage systems to collect used masks.
31 What is the purpose of the text
A. To appeal to people to recycle. B. To explain a social phenomenon.
C. To stress the importance of PPE. D. To introduce an environmental problem.
D
Christmas cards are a big tradition in the English-speaking world. In 2017, people in Britain sent and received about 900 million cards. That’s an average of about twelve cards for every person, from tiny babies to the oldest grandparents. The number of cards that are sent around Britain causes an annual headache for the postal service. Each year, the postal service has to take on seasonal staff to help with the extra mail, and postal sorting offices are stretched to their maximum capacity and sometimes beyond it.
In 1994, before the age of email and social media, the service handled about 1.6 billion cards! In spite of advertisements telling people to “Post Early for Christmas”, few people got round to sending their cards off before December 10th; and from that point on, the postal service slowed down. Until the age of faxes, emails and social media, the pre-Christmas period often caused a lot of problems for firms, as “urgent” letters and documents took several days to reach their destinations by post, which were slowed down by the mass of Christmas mail!
During the month of December in Britain, a house with no Christmas cards is like a pub with no beer. For the most part, however, people of all faiths and of no faith join in the tradition of celebrating Christmas as a festival, whether they do so for religious reasons or not. Every British home at Christmas is merrily decorated not just with hollies, but also with a display of Christmas cards received from friends, family members, neighbors, employers and a variety of other people. In some places, the number of Christmas cards people receive is seen as a measure of their status among their friends and neighbors.
As for the subjects of Christmas cards, the range, today, is enormous. At one time, two principal themes predominated (占多数): the Christmas story, with pictures of the biblical scenes; and “traditional Christmas”, with imaginary scenes of Christmas which included burning wood fires and happy-looking parents and kids sitting together. Today, while “traditional Christmas” is favored by most people, there is no limit to the variety of pictures on cards.
While more and more people send e-cards to their friends and family members, you can’t hang an e-card on the wall, and you can’t decorate a room with rows of e-cards. Sending and receiving Christmas cards is still best done by “snail mail” which includes a real card and a real envelope. It’s much more fun.
32. How did the postal service handle the problem of Christmas cards
A. By hiring temporary employees. B. By sending the cards off earlier.
C. By turning to social media for help. D. By delaying sending letters from firms.
33. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 3
A. The popularity of Christmas. B. The decoration of British homes.
C. The religious belief in Christmas. D. The significance of Christmas cards.
34. Which scene of Christmas cards is the most popular among modern people
A. The religious story. B. The holiday gift.
C. The family reunion. D. The landscape painting.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the e-cards
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Unclear.

The current population of oysters (牡蛎) is only a small part of their historic levels. ____36____. To help maintain existing habitats, the state requires licenses for the harvesting of shellfish and controls where and when the harvesting activity can take place. South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources has also planned to recycle and replant oyster shells.
____37____. They serve as anchors to which babies can attach themselves. Returning shells to the state’s rivers ensures that any larvae (幼虫) looking for a home can find something to which they can be attached.
The critical nature of oysters in the ecosystem is difficult to overstate. Along the Atlantic shoreline of the United States, the Eastern Oyster is considered a foundation species. Oysters gather together as part of their natural life cycle, forming reefs that provide the habitat for fish, crabs, and other small ocean creatures. ____38____.
In addition to being the bedrock of many underwater communities, oysters also help maintain the cleanliness of South Carolina’s coastal waters. Dirty water comes in from the ocean and gets filtered by oysters. Water goes back out cleanly. ____39____. Tourists want to go to beautiful and clean beaches, come out on boat trips, and see dolphins.
South Carolina is working hard to rebuild coastal reefs that will support and sustain future oyster populations. It’s worth keeping in mind that every shell removed from the river could be the base for the next year’s new oysters. ____40____, it’s going to be a long time before we get enough recruitment (增长) in the oyster population to keep it sustainable.
A. Once we lose that natural shell base
B. These little tiny fish need somewhere to hide
C. Because it is important to recycle the oyster shells
D. Even the local tourism industry relies on this effect of oysters
E. The best place to settle is going to be where there are adult oysters
F. South Carolina is actively working to restore and sustain its wild oysters
G. Oyster shells, both live and dead, provide the main habitat for the next generation

On the snowy morning before Christmas, my cousins Bonnie and Ruby were making snowmen and throwing snowballs to each other while I was trying to catch the snowflakes. I was eleven years old and had been living with my aunt and her large family since I’d lost my mother a year earlier. My dad, who was working out of state and could only see me occasionally, was on his way home.
My cousins and I went into the kitchen where my aunt had been cooking for hours. As my cousins eyed the pies, I asked my aunt for the sixth time that morning, “Shouldn’t he be here by now ” “He’ll be here when he gets here. You need to be patient, dear!” she said.
My aunt and uncle were kind to me and I loved them and my cousins, but there were times when I felt lonely in this large family. I compared myself to the fruit salad my aunt was making. The cousins were the apples, pears, grapes and peaches that were all homegrown and belonged together. I was the pineapple that my aunt had just added. While it blended in, anyone eating it knew it was a foreign ingredient. So I often prayed to myself, “Please present me with a mother and a warm home.”
My steps were slow as I followed my cousins to the back door. “If you girls go to the top of the hill, you’ll see his car when it comes around,” my aunt’s voice became soft when she saw my slumped (耷拉着的) shoulders.
We’d barely gotten to the top of the hill when we heard the sound of a motor and saw my father’s car coming around. As it pulled to a stop beside the front gate, I ran down the hill immediately. Suddenly, a redheaded woman stepped between us. “I’ve been so anxious to meet you that I couldn’t resist hugging you,” she said. Then I found myself enfolded in soft arms that reminded me of my mother.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

W: Oh, I didn’t think from her point of view. Thanks, Alan. I won’t persuade her any more, but I can teach her how to use the smartphone next time I visit her.

Davyon Johnson, 11, from Muskogee, doesn’t understand what all the attention is about. In his words, he just “did the right thing”. And while that is true, saving not just one, but two people on the same day is kind of a really big deal.
First off, Davyon was at school and heard a boy say “I’m choking...” A 7th grader called Bill was choking on a water bottle cap. Having learned some first-aid techniques from a video, Davyon took immediate action, and after 3 tries, was able to get the bottle cap to pop out of the boy’s throat.
Then, later the same day, he and his mom were driving home when they saw smoke coming from a house. He asked his mom to stop and he approached the house. He found an elderly woman having trouble leaving the burning house. Davyon stopped and helped her safely exit the house. The fire department soon arrived to take over.
Davyon’s amazing actions caught the attention of The Muskogee Police Department who presented him with a certificate naming him an honorary member of their force.
When he is not saving people, Davyon enjoys wrestling, basketball and RC cars.
Davyon is a great example of the young person. Check out this video and then learn how you can prepare to help others just like Davyon.

31. What is the purpose of the text
A. To appeal to people to recycle. B. To explain a social phenomenon.
C. To stress the importance of PPE. D. To introduce an environmental problem.
C 29. B 30. C 31. D

根据第二段中的“In a recent report, the United Nations found that from March 2020 to November 2021, around 87,000 tons of used masks and gloves have become non-disposable waste.(联合国在最近的一份报告中发现,从2020年3月至2021年11月,约有8.7万吨使用过的口罩和手套成为非一次性废物。)”可知,使用过的被丢弃的口罩和手套成为非一次性垃圾,即会被再次使用,结合第三段中的“These fibers can never fully degrade, and instead, break down into microplastics and nanoplastics that linger in our oceans.(这些纤维永远无法完全降解,相反,它们会分解成残留在海洋中的微塑料和纳米塑料。)”
根据第五段中的“Instead of traditional masks, the United Nations recommends using safe, biodegradable masks or washable cloth masks as an alternative.(联合国建议使用安全、可降解的口罩或可清洗的布质口罩代替传统口罩。)”

A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Unclear.
A 33. D 34. C 35. B
根据第一段中“ Each year, the postal service has to take on seasonal staff to help with the extra mail, and postal sorting offices are stretched to their maximum capacity and sometimes beyond it.(每年,邮政服务部门都不得不雇用季节性员工来帮助处理额外的邮件,邮政分拣办公室的工作已经达到了最大限度,有时甚至超负荷)”可知,每年圣诞节期间,英国邮政服务都需要雇佣临时员工来处理额外的邮件,邮局的分拣中心也会超负荷运转即通过雇佣临时员工来处理圣诞卡的问题。故选A。
根据第三段中“During the month of December in Britain, a house with no Christmas cards is like a pub with no beer.
根据倒数第二段中“At one time, two principal themes predominated (占多数): the Christmas story, with pictures of the biblical scenes; and “traditional Christmas”, with imaginary scenes of Christmas which included burning wood fires and happy-looking parents and kids sitting together. (有一段时间,两个主要主题占主导地位:圣诞节故事,有圣经场景的图片;还有“传统的圣诞节”,想象圣诞节的场景,包括燃烧的柴火和快乐的父母和孩子坐在一起)”可知,燃烧的柴火和快乐的父母和孩子坐在一起的圣诞卡片场景最受现代人的欢迎即家庭团聚的场景。故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“While more and more people send e-cards to their friends and family members, you can’t hang an e-card on the wall, and you can’t decorate a room with rows of e-cards.
F 37. G 38. B 39. D 40. A
根据空后的“To help maintain existing habitats, the state requires licenses for the harvesting of shellfish and controls where and when the harvesting activity can take place.(为了帮助维持现有的栖息地,该州要求获得捕捞贝类的许可证,并控制捕捞活动的地点和时间。)”可知,为保护牡蛎的栖息地,某州作出了一些具体的要求;由the state可知,此空处应出现the state相关的内容,F选项“South Carolina is actively working to restore and sustain its wild oysters(南卡罗来纳州正在积极恢复和维持其野生牡蛎)”中的South Carolina为空后the state,且与空后内容吻合。故选F项。
根据空后的“They serve as anchors to which babies can attach themselves. Returning shells to the state’s rivers ensures that any larvae (幼虫) looking for a home can find something to which they can be attached.(它们充当锚,牡蛎幼虫可以把自己固定在上面。将贝壳放回该州的河流中,可以确保任何寻找家园的幼虫都能找到可以依附的东西。)”可知,此处讲述的是贝壳对繁育后代的重要性,G选项“Oyster shells, both live and dead, provide the main habitat for the next generation(活的和死的牡蛎壳为下一代提供了主要的栖息地)”内容概括了本段主题,其中的Oyster shells与空后的they所指内容一致。故选G项。
根据空前的“Oysters gather together as part of their natural life cycle, forming reefs that provide the habitat for fish, crabs, and other small ocean creatures.(作为自然生命周期的一部分,牡蛎会聚集在一起,形成珊瑚礁,为鱼类、螃蟹和其他小型海洋生物提供栖息地。)”可知,牡蛎为一些小的海洋生物提供了栖息场所,B选项“These little tiny fish need somewhere to hide(这些小鱼需要找个地方躲起来)”符合题意,选项中的these little tiny fish与空后的other small ocean creatures吻合。故选B项。
根据空后的“Tourists want to go to beautiful and clean beaches, come out on boat trips, and see dolphins.(游客们想去美丽干净的海滩,乘船旅行,看海豚。)”
分析该空所在句子结构可知,逗号后“it’s going to be a long time before we get enough recruitment (增长) in the oyster population to keep it sustainable.(我们还需要很长一段时间才能增长足够的牡蛎的数量来保持它的可持续发展。)” 故选A项。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I stepped back and studied her.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“We have a special present for you,” my dad said.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I stepped back and studied her. She stood no taller than my father’s shoulder and was pleasantly rounded. When the sunlight touched her hair, it sparkled as brightly as a new penny. And when she spoke, it was with a soft accent. Then, I got the news that this young woman’s name was Polly and she was my father’s girlfriend. While we chattered excitedly, my dad added their wrapped gifts to the piles which were already under the tree.
“We have a special present for you,” my dad said. “It’s Polly! She has agreed to marry me and to be your new mother!” Polly waved her new ring in the air and said, “That isn’t all. We’ve rented a big house for us. You are going to come with us after Christmas to our new home.” I could feel the tears of happiness spilling down my cheeks. After Christmas, we said goodbye to my cousin’s family and moved to our new home. I had my own home and a new mother, which was the answer to a lonely little girl’s prayers.
