In the fall of 1985, I was holding a dream to Howard University, so that one day I could sit on a Supreme Court bench somewhere and make some just sentence.
Twenty-one years later, I am still a dreamer and be with quite a different experience to go through.
My grandma developed cancer, so I made the choice to leave the college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream. In 1999, we adopted (收养)our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3.In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how busy I became, raising four boys under the age of 8 .Our home was a complete zoo---a joyous zoo. As a result, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant talking as few as one class each term.
The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.
In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree and finally become a judge!
I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you're looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you're in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won't arrive in your life on one day. It's a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.

B. The author just felt guilty for her sons.
C. The author wanted to remain a full-time housewife.
D. The author was too confused to make a correct choice.

From video games and museums to medical training, virtual reality (VR) has been changing our lives for the better. However, this amazing new technology has a so-far unsolvable shortcoming: motion sickness. “With modern VR systems, the possibility of motion sickness after only 15 minutes is anywhere from 40 to 70 percent.” Thomas Stoffregen, a researcher told ABC News. Indeed, some VR applications have a user-sickness rate of nearly 100 percent!
When caused by VR, this sickness is called cybersickness. It’s probably caused by sensory conflict, explains Stoffregen. When you are wearing a VR device, your body’s motion sensors cannot match the information received by your eyes. For example, when we wear a VR headset and ride a virtual roller-coaster, we think we are going up and down, but our bodies stay still. It leads to confusion of balance and spatial orientation. Sickness is our bodies’ natural response to this confusion. Adding to this problem, Stoffregen says, “Women are more likely to feel sick from the VR experience than men.”
According to a study by Bas Rokers, a scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, one reason could be the headsets. To work properly, VR headsets must match up with your pupil distance. Since they are designed larger than the average PD, not everyone gets the best experience.
Rokers found that when the headset PD is too large, users experience greater discomfort. Based on his studies, about 90 percent of women have a shorter PD than the headset is designed for. In comparison, only 5 percent of men had this problem. ABC News says that cybersickness presents a “serious barrier” to widespread use of VR technologies. However, people believe it will become comfortable and easy to use and that it can play a great role in our lives.
12. What do we know about cybersickness
A. It’s a sickness caused by VR applications.
B. It has a higher incidence among young people.
C. It is caused by one’s poor sense of direction.
D It immediately happens when VR device is used.
13. Why are women more likely to have a bad VR experience
A. They have a poor sense of balance. B. VR headsets are too large for their PDs.
C. It’s difficult for them to set the VR headset. D. They can feel discomfort more easily.
14. What do people think of the future of VR technologies
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Hopeful. D. Worrying.
15. What’s the best title for the passage
A. The Reality of Cybersickness B. New Treatments for Cybersickness
C. Getting to Know Virtual Reality D. Saying No to Virtual Reality
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. A

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, people believe it will become comfortable and easy to use and that it can play a great role in our lives.(然而,人们相信它会变得舒适和易于使用,它可以在我们的生活中发挥重要作用)”可推知,人们对虚拟现实技术的未来充满希望。故选C。
【15题详解】

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Your mind is very powerful. Yet, if you’re like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on the way you think. After all, who thinks about thinking
____16____ If you draw wrong conclusions about who you are and what you’re able to do, you’ll limit your potential.
Your thoughts leads to self-perpetuating (自我持续的) cycles. ____17____ So if you think you’re failure, you’ll feel like a failure. Then, you’ll act like a failure, which reinforces (强化) your belief that you must be a failure.
I see this happen all the time in my therapy office. Someone will come in saying, “I’m just not good enough to advance in my career.” That assumption leads her to feel discouraged and causes her to put in less effort. ____18____
Once you draw a conclusion about yourself you’re likely to do two things; look for evidence that reinforces your belief and discount (低估) anything that runs contrary to your belief. Someone who develops the belief that he’s a failure, for example, will view each mistake as proof that he’s not good enough. ____19____ Consider for a minuet that it might not be your lack of talent or skills that are holding you back. Instead, it might be your beliefs that keep you from performing at your peak.
____20____ That’s not to say positive thoughts have magical powers. But optimistic thoughts lead to productive behavior, which increases your chances of a successful result.
A. When he succeeds, he’ll think it is due to luck.
B. That lack of effort stops her from getting promoted.
C. Being more positive can lead to better results.
D. With conscious effort, you can learn to think more positively.
E. However, the way you look at yourself becomes your reality.
F. Once that belief gets deeply rooted in his mind, he will suffer a lot.
G. What you think has a direct impact on how you feel and how you behave.
【答案】16. E 17. G 18. B 19. A 20. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了人的思维对自我认知和自我发展的影响。
【16题详解】
上文“Yet, if you’re like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on the way you think. After all, who thinks about thinking ”(然而,如果你和大多数人一样,你可能很少花时间反思自己的思维方式。 句中“becomes your reality”与下文“limit your potential”相照应。故选E项。
【17题详解】
下文“So if you think you’re a failure, you’ll feel like a failure. Then, you’ll act like a failure”(所以如果你认为自己是个失败者,你就会觉得自己是个失败者。然后,你会表现得像个失败者)说明想法影响你的行为,是对G项“你的想法直接影响你的感受和行为”的举例说明,上下文语意连贯。故选G项。
【18题详解】
空处位于段末,应承接上文。上文“That assumption leads her to feel discouraged and causes her to put in less effort”(这种假设会让她感到气馁,导致她不那么努力)提到,“自己不够好不能得到提升”的假设会导致人不努力。由此可知,空处继续陈述这种假设带来的不良影响。选项B“缺乏努力使她无法升职”符合语境,其中“that lack of effort”呼应上文“put in less effort”。故选B项。
【19题详解】
本段第一句“Once you draw a conclusion about yourself, you’re likely to do two things; look for evidence that reinforces your belief and discount anything that runs contrary to your belief.”(一旦你对自己下了结论,你可能会做两件事;寻找能够强化你的信念的证据,而忽略与你的信念相反的任何东西)指出对自己下了结论会有两种情况。由此可知,空格处是对第二种情况的阐释。选项A“当他成功的时候,他会把它归功于运气”为第二种情况,即忽略任何与你之前认知不符的事实。故选A项。
【20题详解】
由下文“That’s not to say positive thoughts have magical powers.”(这并不是说积极的思想有神奇的力量)可推知,空格处内容与积极的思想有关。选项C“创造一个更积极的心态可以带来更好的结果”符合题意,上下文语意连贯,positive是关键词。故选C项。

Prissy Baker was in Oscar Miller’s store on New Year’s morning, buying matches when her uncle, Richard Baker, came in. He did not look at Prissy, nor did she wish him a happy New Year. She would not have dared. He was actually a big, strong-looking man an uncle to be proud of, Prissy thought, if only he were like what he used to be himself. He was the only uncle Prissy had, and when she was a little girl they had been great friends. She used to break into Uncle Richard’s house to play tricks on him, for the woodshed door was always unfastened. But that was before the quarrel.
Uncle Richard had not been speaking with Prissy or her father since the two brothers’ quarrel eight years ago. The fault had been mainly on Richard’s side, but he was unwilling to admit it.
Richard Baker informed Mr. Miller he was on his way to Navarre to deliver a load of pork. “New Year’s Day would be pretty much the same as any other day to you,” said Mr. Miller, for Richard Baker was a bachelor (单身汉).
“Well, I always like a good dinner on New Year’s Day,” said Richard Baker. “It’s about the only way I can celebrate. I got everything ready last night but I have to send the pork now. I won’t get back from Navarre before one o’clock, so I guess I’ll have to put up with a cold bite.”
After her uncle had driven away, Prissy walked thoughtfully home. She had planned to spend a nice, lazy holiday with the new book her father had given her at Christmas and a box of candy. She did not mean to cook a dinner, for her father had to meet a friend and would be gone the whole day. There was nobody else to cook dinner for. Prissy’s mother had died when Prissy was a baby. so Prissy became her father’s housekeeper.
But as she walked home, she could not help thinking about Uncle Richard. He would certainly have cold New Year, cold enough to freeze the whole coming year. She felt sorry for him, picturing him returning from Navarre, cold and hungry, to find a fireless house and an uncooked dinner.

【答案】参考范文
Suddenly an idea came into Prissy’s head. Why not go to uncle’s and prepare a delicious dinner for him Without any hesitation, Prissy ran to Richard’s home as fast as possible. On her arrival, she slid into the house with her heart pounding strongly. She took out the frozen food from the fridge and mixed the ingredients together. She made some bread, which smelled good. She cooked the best food she ever cooked; the food looked particularly inviting. It must be her uncle’s favorite food. Prissy thought to herself, wishing that her uncle would like it.
Prissy had just set the table when an angry voice cut through the peace. It was Uncle Richard that yelled. “How dare you...” However, hardly had Richard stopped his yelling with fury when he saw the bright room. Into his sight came the tidy and clean table and a feast for dinner. “My dad would be gone the whole day. So...” she added with a sincere voice. “I’m so sorry for the quarrel between us. But could we eat together to celebrate the New Year just like 8 years ago ” Tears welling up with guilt and sorrow, Uncle stepped toward her, stroked her head and gathered her into his tender embrace. The family was rebuilt, and Richard finally admitted his fault and got relieved by Prissy’s concern and devotion.

Tell your car to make a phone call without holding the phone. Tell your car to send an e -mail without touching the computer or even tell your car to send a call for help. Sound like some-thing from a science fiction movie. Well, thanks to a new “ talking car”, this is soon to become reality.
Road Track, the Israeli producer of Chevrolet, has built a computer platform called Chevy Star. It offers the driver a wide range of things you can get with your voice.
It uses a box the size of a mobile phone attached to the rear-view mirror. The driver can use it to be in touch with Road Track’s Offices. Many operators work round the clock so as to answer the phone and the needs of drivers.
To get into the car, the driver has to say a secret code, such as “Open Sesame”, for the doors to open and the engine to start. Upon entering the car, the driver has three buttons: one for emergencies, another for telephone calls and a third for practical information.
When the driver presses the emergency button, the operator calls the car to ask if there is a problem. If the driver is lost, the operator can use a map to help the driver find his or her way.
“It depends 100 percent on the voice, so you don’t need to take your eyes of the road or hands off the wheel to use it. You just speak to the operator and then it will give you instructions, ”said Danny Laguna of Chevrolet.
The operator also alerted when the driver hits your brake too hard. And if operators find a problem anywhere on the car, they warn the driver straight away. Need to make a phone call Just press the button and read out the number to dial. E-mail can also be dictated. The driver also has many practical things to choose from; the weather, the latest world or local news, what’s on a the cinema or theatre.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
