In the west of the city Seville in Spain, a sea of giant mirrors is reflecting the sun’s energy to provide “concentrated solar power (CSP)” while brightening the path to a new wave of green energy projects.
The 624 carefully positioned mirrors reflect the sun’s heat towards a 50-meter-tall central tower where it is concentrated and used to boil water into steam. The superheated steam is then used to turn a turbine (汽轮机) that can produce up to 11 megawatts of electricity—enough power for 6,000 homes—according to Solucar, the Spanish company that has built the power plant.
The Spanish tower, known as PS10, is the first stage of an ambitious development. By 2025 it is hoped that additional towers will create “a solar farm” with an output of 500 megawatts, which would be enough power for 180,000 homes, almost the entire population of nearby Seville.
CSP produces no greenhouse gases and the only pollution is visual. There is also the possibility that production can keep going around the clock-even when the sun has gone down. Solucar is currently testing technology at a plant near Granada that will pump 50 percent of the electricity generated in the day into the Spanish national grid (国家输电网), and use the other 50 percent to melt salt, which will then act as a kind of battery, storing the sun’s power. When dusk falls, the heat stored in the molten salt can be used to generate power through the night.
The Sahara, the world’s largest desert, has always been seen as a problem. But with large-scale CSP projects, suddenly all that empty space, with its year round clear skies and hot sun, has a value that could transform local economies. It could potentially turn Africa into an exporter of energy to power-hungry Europe.
24.What is the Spanish tower PS10 used to do according to the text
A.Store boiled water. B.Generate electricity.
C.Reflect the sun’s energy. D.Brighten the path nearby.
25.The underlined phrase “a solar farm” in paragraph 3 refers to a place where .
A.towers like PS10 are set up
B.greenhouses are built to make profits
C.crops are grown with new technology
D.farmers mainly use solar energy at home
26.The plant near Granada melts salt in the day so that .
A.molten salt works better than water when producing electricity
B.melting salt can reduce environmental pollution
C.some sun power can be saved for the night use
D.salt is easy to melt in the sun
27.Which word can best describe the author’s attitude towards the future of CSP
A.Critical. B.Doubtful. C.Subjective. D.Optimistic.

Music has been considered as a "background" for various activities for centuries. The development of electronic recording and reproduction systems has enabled background music to become prevalent in society. Background music is intended to be heard but not actively or purposely listened to. Strictly speaking, music that catches a person's attention isn't truly "background" music.
There is certainly strong evidence from different kinds of sources that people respond differently to various kinds of music. However, the various factors that may influence the effects of different kinds of music on behavior and cognition (认知)haven't been systematically documented or explored. Hector Berlioz's description of his reactions to a piece of music included increased blood circulation, violent pulse rate, trembling and many others. Although in Berlioz's case he was actively listening to the music rather than passively absorbing the sound, the effects on his physiological (生理的)mechanisms were very marked.
Nowadays, music is available to everyone through radio, recordings and television, and recorded background music is played in many public places. But there have been few studies which have investigated the effect of background music on the behaviour of pupils. Hallam carried out a study on mathematics performance in a school for children with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). A significant improvement occurred in the behavior of these children when background music was played. And improved levels of co-operation and a reduction in aggression (攻击性)were also reported in the lessons immediately following the intervention. Other studies found that, most pupils, with appropriate music in the background, felt more relaxed, happier and more productive. The most effective music for improving children's performance was what they liked, providing that it didn't overly excite them.
Studies at the Tomatis Institute widely used specially designed music to cure children with learning disabilities and attention disorders. The Tomatis techniques are based on the theory that, unlike the continuous low-frequency sounds in some music stimulate the inner ear and improve the brain's listening, helping it process all information more accurately.
28.What does the underlined word "prevalent" in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Popular. B.Valuable. C.Familiar. D.Important.
29.What does Hector Berlioz's case show
A.Typical human reactions to music. B.Effect of music on human physiology.
C.Humans' active participation in music. D.Physiological disorders caused by music.
30.What can we know from the third paragraph
A.Most pupils feel less stressed after listening to music.
B.Background music played at school is widely studied.
C.Pupils with EBD exposed to music behave less aggressive.
D.Effective background music is the music that excites pupils most.
31.Tomatis Institute cures children with attention disorders by ________.
A.stimulating their inner ear with low-frequency sounds in music
B.developing their listening skills to process information more clearly
C.improving their brain's listening with high-frequency sounds in music
D.putting them in environments filled with continuous low-frequency sounds
D
A maverick describes a person who thinks independently. A maverick refuses to follow the customs or rules of a group to which he or she belongs. In the US, a maverick is often admired for his or her free spirit, although others who belong to the maverick’s group may not like the maverick’s independent ways.
But where did the word “maverick” come from
Early in the 1800s, a man named Samuel Augustus Maverick settled down in Texas, which was a place of wide-open land, rich soil, cattle ranches(牛场) and cowboys. As the years passed, Mr. Maverick increased his property(财产) in Texas. Before long, he owned huge pieces of land that were good for raising cattle. But he had no cattle. He wasn’t a rancher.
One day, a man came to Samuel Maverick to pay him an old debt. But the man didn’t have enough money. So he offered Mr. Maverick 400 head of cattle. Mr. Maverick accepted them, but he didn’t really want them. He simply put the cattle on his land to eat and care for themselves.
It was not long before the cows reproduced(繁殖). The calves grew and had more calves. Soon, hundreds of cows and calves moved freely across Samuel Maverick’s land. They also moved across the land of nearby ranch owners.
It was a tradition among ranchers in the West to put a mark of ownership on newborn calves. They burned the name of their ranch into the animal’s skin with a hot iron. The iron made a clear mark called a “brand”. Brands allowed ranchers to easily see who owned which cattle.
Samuel Maverick refused to brand his calves. “Why should I ” he asked. If all the other cattle owners branded theirs, then those without a brand belonged to him.
And this is how the word “maverick” entered the American language. It meant a calf without a brand. As time passed, the word “maverick” took on a wider meaning. It came to mean a person who was too independent to follow even his or her own group.
32.Why did the man give Samuel Maverick 400 head of cattle
A.To get some money. B.To return what he owed him.
C.To buy some of his land. D.To ask him to raise them.
33.How could the ranchers easily know who the cattle belonged to
A.Through the brand on the cattle. B.Through the name of the cattle.
C.Through the appearance of the cattle. D.Through the land on which the cattle stayed.
34.What can we learn about Samuel Augustus Maverick from the text
A.He was born in Texas. B.He took good care of all his cattle.
C.He didn’t really want to accept the cattle. D.He followed the tradition of ranchers in the West.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.How to become an independent thinker. B.“Maverick” means a calf without a brand.
C.The life story of Samuel Augustus Maverick. D.How the word “maverick” got into American English.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25分)

My mom only had one eye. She ran a small shop at a market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed (尴尬) and wondered how could she do this to me I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, “Your mom only has one eye !” and laughed at me.
I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, “Why don’t you have the other eye ! You’re only going to make me a laughingstock (笑柄)!” My mom did not reply. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, I felt so good to have said what I wanted to say. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.
For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something hurting at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our poor life. I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Scoul University, I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. Then I got married there.
I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one afternoon someone knocked at my door.

It was my mom! And still with her one eye! My little girl hid behind me, scared of my mom’s eye. How many times I had imagined seeing my mom again, but I never thought she would come to Seoul in person. She looked much older than her real age. After so many years, in my heart, I had come to accept her with one eye. I invited her in and prepared a big meal for her. After supper, we sat down and talked about everything we remembered.
“My son, I’m so sorry that I only have one eye.” my mom said. “How come ” I asked curiously. “You see, when you caught a bad fever at two, I rushed you to the hospital only to be knocked by a car and lose my one eye forever,” mom said in a quiet voice as if talking about someone else’s story. I couldn’t help stepping forward and hugging my mom firmly, tears of shame and regret clouding my eyes. I wanted to thank her but words failed me. What a foolish mistake I had made and how shameful I was!
