My daughter is out of the ordinary. Three years ago, halfway through college, my 22-year- old daughter dropped out and became a farmer in Vermont. Next stop was California, where she raised goats. Now she is in Costa Rica, where she manages a wellness retreat center. But I’ve learned to let go and accepted that her choices are not mine.
As I’ve seen how my daughter has chosen to live her life, I’ve thought hard about my own, especially the part about jumping off the set path. Overtime my job had become less fulfilling (令人有成就感的) . As I looked at what I wanted to accomplish in the last years of my working life, this wasn’t it. So I prepared carefully and left my job.
To celebrate my new freedom, my daughter and I had decided to meet in Arizona the week after my job ended. We went to the Shaman’s Cave. At the top of it, the road became narrow. I stepped onto the path behind my daughter and looked down at the canyon floor, about 10 billion feet below. I walked backward, my heart beating fast. Sitting down hard on a rock, Ⅰ started to cry, the fear becoming more serious.
My daughter sat beside me, s oothed me and promised not to leave my side. She sang quietly, encouraging me to breathe deeply. Then, after sitting quietly for a while, I took my courage and followed her.
I know that my cry that day was less about the drop of the mountain and more about the drop I’d just made in my life. Leaving my job hit me at some point. Luckily, my daughter was there. From that day on, I saw my daughter in a new way. I began to learn to appreciate her.
What do we know about the author’s daughter
She takes an unusual way.
She performed well at college.
She cares little about her mother.
She doesn’t like to live in big cities.
Why did the author leave her job
She followed in her daughter’s footsteps.
Her job failed to meet her expectations.
The pressure of her job forced her to do so.
She hoped to spend more time with her daughter.
The underlined word “soothed” in Paragraph 4 probably means
A. calmed. B. observed. C. assisted. D. criticized.
What can we infer about the author’s trip
It gave her courage to face challenges.
It helped her find the meaning of life.
It brought her daughter and her closer.
It changed her view of her daughter.
C
Have you ever seen a car without a driver It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Tech companies around the world have been designing and testing driverless vehicles and the technology is available already.
So, how do they work The cars are covered in sensors that can detect other cars and obstacles on the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems are used. Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information and processes this to work out when to accelerate, brake and steer. All you have to do is type in the destination.
Sounds like your idea of heaven Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film while “driving” will all be possible with this new technology. In addition,
computers are generally more efficient drivers than humans, meaning emissions can be reduced. They also drive more safely than people — they don’t get distracted by music or friends, they obey the speed limit and they have quicker reaction times in case of an emergency.
However, there are still many drawbacks of driverless puters will have difficulties making ethical (道德上的) decisions. If a child ran out into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn aside sharply and potentially hurt the car’s passengers instead Moreover, there would also be legal questions. Should children or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves Or would there need to be a responsible adult with a driving license in the car at all times
Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, many people would be put out of a job by the popularization of driverless cars. Bus, taxi and train drivers would be made redundant.
I’m not convinced I’d want a driverless car, but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and commonplace on our roads.
What do you need to do when using a driverless car
Control the sensors.
Read the road signs carefully.
Check the satellite navigation systems.
Put the address into the computer.
What does the third paragraph mainly tell us about driverless cars
A. Their emissions. B. Their advantages.
C. Their testing process. D. Their reaction to an emergency.
How does the author analyze the shortcomings of driverless cars
By raising some questions.
By analyzing their harmful effects.
By making a comparison.
By sharing personal experiences.
The author’s attitude towards driverless car can be described as .
A. indifferent B. doubtful C. supportive D. objective
D
People’s first memories are all autobiographical (自传式的) , or memories of significant experiences in their lives, and these events typically didn’t happen before the age of 2 or 3. In fact, most people can’t remember things from the first few years of their lives — a phenomenon researchers have called infantile amnesia (婴儿期失忆症) .
However, research suggests that infants (婴儿) can form other kinds of memories. Within the first few days of life, infants can recall their own mother’s face and distinguish it from the face of a stranger. A few months later, infants can demonstrate that they remember lots of familiar faces by smiling most at the ones they see most often.
But if so, why do people experience infantile amnesia Though it still isn’t clear whether it’s because we can’t form autobiographical memories, or whether we just have no way to retrieve (找回) them, scientists have a few guesses.
One is that autobiographical memories require you to have some sense of self. Researchers have tested this ability using a mirror recognition task called the rouge test. It involves marking a baby’s nose with a spot of red lipstick. Researchers then place the infant in front of a mirror. Infants younger than 18 months just smile at the baby in the reflection, not showing any evidence of recognizing themselves or the red mark on their face. Between 18 and 24 months, infants
touch their own nose, even looking embarrassed, suggesting that they connect the red dot in the mirror with their own face — they start to form some sense of self.
Another possible explanation is that because infants don’t have language until later in the second year of life, they can’t form narratives (叙述) about their own lives that they can later recall. Finally, the hippocampus, which is the region of the brain that’s largely responsible for memory, isn’t fully developed in the infancy period. Scientists will continue to investigate how these factors might contribute to infantile amnesia.
What can infants do in their first few months
Memorize most of their family members.
Distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar faces.
Remember a string of events from the recent past.
Identify their own reflections in the mirror.
According to the rouge test, what do infants tend to do after 18 months
See their reflections as themselves.
Ignore the marks on their faces.
Enjoy playing with their reflections.
Show a strong interest in the mirror.
Which of the following could be a cause of infantile amnesia, according to the text
Infants have a strong sense of self.
The hippocampus isn’t fully developed in the infancy period.
Infants lack communication skills.
Infants haven’t experienced significant things.
Which of the following can be the best title for the text
When do babies start remembering things
Why is it hard to retrieve lost memories
How do kids form their first memories
Why can’t we remember being a baby

Eric was a nine-year-old boy who lived with his single mother, Stacey and sister, Lily. They lived a hard life. Eric felt bad for their situation but worse for himself, especially in school.
Eric’s leather (皮革) boots were worn out. They didn’t protect his feet from the rain, and his socks became totally wet as water went through the holes in his shoes. Stacey attempted to fix the holes, but it was no use. Eric still walked to school with that pair of broken shoes. How much he wished he could also have new, comfortable and expensive shoes his classmates wore!
One day, Eric returned from school and complained to Stacey, “ It was raining today. Water has leaked into my shoes again. I hate my boots! Why can’t you get me new ones ” Stacey was sad and helpless. “I spent our last savings on your sister’s medicine. She’s sick. Eric, you know that. You need to act like a responsible big brother!” she answered. Tears welled up in Eric’s eyes. “I hate you!” he shouted. “You only care about Lily! You don’t love me!” Then he cried and ran to his room.
After preparing dinner, Stacey went to his room with his dinner plate. “I’m sorry, Eric,” she whispered to comfort him. “We’re going through a very tough journey recently. But I’ll get you new shoes in the future.” But Eric refused to listen to her.
The next day, when Eric went to class, he took his seat quietly and hid his feet under his chair, as usual. He was embarrassed to show his boots.
As the math teacher, Mrs Fletcher, entered the class, all the students greeted her. “Today, we have a very special friend with us,” she smiled. “Everyone, please welcome Ben, your new classmate.”
Soon after, a boy with a pair of crutches (拐杖) entered. The new boy only had one leg. Eric was shocked. He and all his classmates thought how unlucky Ben was. And they thought Ben must be very shy and sad. They didn’t know Ben was actually outgoing, confident and optimistic. While they were showing great pity to him, Mrs Fletcher asked Ben to introduce himself.

第二节
One possible version
To Eric’s surprise, Ben walked to the platform cheerfully and confidently. He talked aloud,
happily and humorously. When Ben finished, they all clapped because of his talent for speaking and
also his courage, optimism, etc. Throughout the day, Ben smiled at everyone and seemed joyful.
Confused about why he wasn’t sad without a leg, Eric approached him and asked him. Ben smiled,
“I have lost a leg, but I have crutches that take me around. I’m grateful for that.”
Inspired by Ben, Eric realized he should appreciate what he had and apologize to his mom.
After school, he gladly walked home. When reaching home, he said to his mom, “Mom, I’m sorry I
shouted at you. I should thank you for this pair of leather shoes, instead. Otherwise, I have to go to
school barefoot. And I will take good care of Lily.” “Oh, I love you, honey. You are a big boy!”
Stacey hugged Eric, and her tears poured down her cheeks silently.

W: What’s the name of the beach
M: Super Paradise.
W: I’ve heard of it. And it’s said to be beautiful Still, I need to talk it over with my friends.

campsite. Get along with your camp neighbors and put up tents during daylight hours. It’s much easier when you
can see what you’re doing. New campers don’t always put enough thoughts into meal planning. Figure out how
many meals you’ll be making for how many people, and make a list. Then do your shopping a day or two before
departure so that the food will be fresh. Don’t be one of those new campers that stop at the convenience store to
buy food on the way to the campground. So much for today. I’ll say more about this issue next time.
