For as long as humans ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )have lived on the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a spoken language problem, communication can be carried out through sign language, in which gestures stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists and people unable to hear or speak have often had to turn to this form of expression. When gestures describe words or ideas, they can often be used internationally. When used for spelling words however, where each gesture stands for a single letter, people must share the same written language.21·cn·jy·com

Fashion has alw ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ays been about change — creating a reason for the customer to buy something new. The next 30 years of the sale will be all about the customer's interests. And it will be up to traders to keep up with their every desire (需求). “The easiest thing to say is, it will be different,” says Nordstrom, president of one of AmericA s oldest department stores. “There still will be customers who desire a fresh new product. What that product is, how we satisfy the customer, that's_open.”21cnjy.com
In many ways, this “di ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )fferent” world that Nordstrom describes has already existed in stores across the USA, with technology as the driving force. Think digital (数字的) fitting rooms, where technology simulates (模拟) body type and gives shoppers a sense of how a coat might look or fit. Or 3 D printers that allow shoppers to make products in their own homes. Even smartphone technology is being developed to let traders get a shopper's personal data to learn about their tastes and interests.
Stores will s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )till have a presence, but mainly just to let customers have a sensory experience — touching and feeling items they can buy from far away and having them shipped. Where customers shop, increasingly, won't matter. A person could shop from home, from a car or even on the subway.
Intel has designed a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) mirror that shows shoppers how clothes look on them — avoiding the inconvenience of a fitting room. When the shopper of the future is ready to cheek out, a cellphone will do. “The cash registers (收银机) of today won't exist anymore,” Nordstrom says. “We see the future of point of sale as completely mobile, but don't expect stores filled with robots rather than salesmen.”21教育网

The “Thumbs Up”
While Western cult ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ure has become used to the thumbs up as a positive signal (probably coming from World War Ⅱ pilots using the signal to communicate that they were “good to go” with ground crews), there are cultures where a thumbs up may land you in trouble. In West Africa, as well as Greece, Italy and Middle East, the thumbs up is pretty much the biggest insult (侮辱).21世纪教育网版权所有
Rather more charming ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) is a thumbs up in Germany and in parts of Japan they just see it as the hand signal for the number one.
The “A OK”
This sign is mainly u ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sed by divers (潜水员) to mean “OK” (to prevent being confused with the thumbs up sign, which means “rise”). Basically the meaning comes out as “great”, or “completely fine”. However, in a few countries in Europe, people may think you're telling them that you think they're a “zero”.2·1·c·n·j·y
The “V Sign”
The sign com ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )es in two formats. One with the palm faced outwards, and one with the palm inwards. In America they mean the same thing — “victory”. However,if the outside of your hand is facing your target, you're giving somebody a long established insult in Great Britain and many English speaking countries such as Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. Winston Churchill famously used the “incorrect” version of the V sign during the early years of the war, turning the outside inside later. The V sign is also considered rude in Italy.2-1-c-n-j-y
The “Corna”
The corna ha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nd gesture has most recently been adopted by fans of rock and heavy metal music. Nowadays many Americans use the gesture simply to mean “rock on”, or in support of the University of Texas in Austin(known as the “Hook' em Horns”). Today it is still popular in Spain,Brazil and Slovakia (斯洛伐克). Historically, however, the symbol possibly dates back to Ancient Greece.21教育网

Not many wo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )men have won the Nobel Peace Prize. Until 2004, no African woman ever had. That was when Dr. Wangari Maathai won it — for planting trees. You might ask, what do trees have to do with peace
“Many wars are fo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ught over resources (资源),” Dr. Maathai said as she accepted the prize. “If we conserve resources better, the fighting will stop.”
Dr. Maathai was born ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) in Kenya in 1940. Unlike most African women, she went to school. High school woke up a hunger in her for more knowledge. She went to college in Kansas and earned a master's degree in science from the University of Pittsburgh. She became the first Kenyan woman ever to earn a Ph.D. Later, Dr. Maathai taught animal science at KenyA s University of Nairobi.
As an educated woman ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), Dr. Maathai feels responsible for leading others. Dr. Maathai started her work in 1977 by planting nine trees in her backyard in Kenya. Trees are important in Africa for several reasons. First, they keep soil from eroding (流失) into streams, thus cutting down on pollution and improving the soil. Second, trees provide firewood. So many trees have been cut down in Africa that women must walk far from home to find wood for cooking. New trees can also keep deserts from spreading.
Dr. Maathai's Gre ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )en Belt Movement pays local women for every tree they plant that is still alive three months later. In its first 15 years, the Green Belt Movement employed at least 50,000 women and planted more than 10 million trees. Following Dr. Maathai's example, the Kenyan government increased its own tree planting efforts. The movement has spread to 30 countries in Africa.
When the lan ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )d and people's lives have improved, Dr. Maathai says, peace will follow.

Jack believes he ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) gets along great with others, but if you were to ask any of them, they would say that Jack makes them feel afraid. Rather than just look at you, he seems to eat you with his eyes. And he often shakes your hand so hard that it hurts. Jack is a caring guy who secretly wishes he had more friends, but his nonverbal awkwardness (笨拙) keeps people at a distance.
Ted is good looki ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng, hard working, and a smooth talker, but he seems to care more about his thoughts than others. When someone has something to say, TeD s wild eyes make him look like he wants to speak before they have finished. His inability to listen to others makes him unpopular with many people.
Arlene is funny and ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )attractive, but even though she keeps laughing and smiling, she looks nervous. Her shoulders and eyebrows (眉毛) are noticeably raised, her voice is high, and her body is stiff. Being around Arlene makes many people feel uncomfortable.
These smart, w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ell intentioned people try their best to connect with others. The sad thing is that they have no idea of the nonverbal messages they communicate. If you want to communicate effectively, avoid misunderstandings, and enjoy trusting relationships, it's important to understand how to use body language.

All the passenge ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rs on the subway who caught a glimpse of me may have thought I was strange. In particular a gentleman sitting opposite me was always staring at me, looking at the cheese bread on the floor in front of me and then staring back at me. A passenger probably dropped it by mistake and got off at a previous stop, but the gentleman might not think so. “Next stop, St. Patrick Station” — my stop was quickly coming up. Just as the doors o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )pened at my stop, I grabbed the cheese bread and left the subway. Instead of going directly to my office as usual, I walked a few more blocks up to Queen's park, where I often saw a homeless man sitting outside. I always wanted to give him something, but only today I walked toward him, who wrapped himself in a sleeping bag. I was full of satisfaction, and so did the homeless man, I thought.21教育名师原创作品

If you want your ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) land to keep fertile, you must try to stop soil from being carried away by water or winds. When soil is taken away by flowing water or blowing winds, we call it soil erosion. Ways have been found to stop soil erosion, and this is known as soil conservation. One way of stopping soil erosion is to grow small plants such as grasses. These plants are referred to as cover_crops,_whose roots hold the soil tightly together. The rain water cannot wash away the soil. When trees and tall bushes are planted at the edges of an open field, soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. The trees and bushes, which act as a very big and firm wall, protect the open land from the winds. The way to stop soil erosion on slopes is to build terraces on the slope of hillside and mountainside. When the slope of a hillside is cut into “steps”, water carrying soil cannot run straight down the terraces, which are used to slow down the speed of the flowing water containing much soil in it. In this way most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces, much soil in it is kept.2·1·c·n·j·y

Farmers can produce ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) more by planting several different crops in the same field. But their success depends on which crops they plant together and how they mix (混合) them in the field. A new computer program written by Dr John Vanderwell of Michigan University can tell a farmer which plants grow well together and which do not. It can tell him how to plant the different crops; if he should plant each in a separate row, or mix the crops in the same row.
