Craig Blackburn, a father and car fan, built a Batmobile for his son’s hope for using the vehicle to brighten the lives of sick children. And now he hopes to use it for more than just his son’s hope after seeing the children’s reaction to the Batmobile.
Based on the number of failures he had seen in car groups, he estimated that only about one in 50 attempted constructions was actually finished and he realized what an incredible opportunity he had.
Mr. Blackburn started the project at the beginning of 2018 after hearing a friend in the US was doing the same thing. It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before picking brains of a friend who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car. With the help of his friend, Mr. Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.
Mr. Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower onto the back of the vehicle and said he had thought about building the more recent Batman Tumbler from the series film Dark Knight. Though Mr. Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction, in September 2019, the car made its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, before being used by Blackburn’s son for his hope.
“It was great. It was so good to see the kids’ and adults’ excitement at seeing the Batmobile.” Mr. Blackburn said. As a result, the car lovers hope to make the car work on the roads as soon as possible, so he can visit sick children and take them out with his son.

A.By making an outer shell for him.
B.By offering him financial support.
C.By sharing the knowledge of building cars.
D.By telling him the background of the car factory.
3.What is the car lovers’ expectation of the Batmobile
A.It will be put to practical use soon.
B.It can be displayed around the world.
C.It can change the lives of sick children.
D.It will appear in the next film about Batman.
Having a best friend is one of the most important experiences of childhood. Adults, however, generally take friendship for granted (认为理当如此). They often feel the joy of having a best friend while growing up. But kids are curious (好奇的) and sometimes they cannot understand the meaning of friendship. This book describes the joy and importance of youthful friendships as eleven pairs and groups of best friends tell what they like and dislike about each other, what special things they do together, and why they are so close.
Their stories prove that best friends can live far away or right next door, can have different backgrounds, can argue and can stay best friends forever—if they know how to keep a friendship alive. The book provides suggested activities for best friends, such as creating a special language, making a best friend’s website, organizing a best friend’s party, or starting a best friend’s club. What is most important is to support each other when one of them is in trouble. The book also points out different kinds of problems between friends, such as how to deal with different opinions, how to keep their friendships for a longer time, and how to communicate with each other.
No matter whether you have a best friend or not, after reading this book, you will learn ways to get along well with others. Finally, you will find out someone may be right there, just waiting for you to find out how to become a best friend.

Teenage life around the world
Asha
I’m from Tanzania. Like most teenagers, I start my day early and end it late. After school, I study at a night school to prepare for the university entrance exam. When I have time off, I prefer to be outdoors. I love nature and animals. I’m quite upset about how we treat the environment, so I do my best to help. I volunteer to plant trees and I’m a member of our school’s Nature Club.

Trying to find the perfect present is about as easy as trying to read someone’s mind. Few people will actually tell you what they want for a special occasion and most of the time your loved ones will insist that they don’t need or want anything! So, what to do Here are some tips that could help.
Start Early
Starting your shopping early can have many advantages. For instance, it gives you enough time to come up with ideas for what you should buy your friends or family members. Moreover, the closer it gets to holidays, the higher the prices go up. So, save your money by being an early bird.
Make a List
Here, you can write down everything your friends or family members love. This can include food, hobbies, experiences, and more. Then try to determine how to use this information to find a gift that perfectly suits them. If you are lucky, you should be able to find good ideas in one of these lists.
Think outside the Box
Often, the reason why you get stuck for gift ideas is that you only focus on the same kind of presents. If you are still coming up empty, it is time to get creative. You can find something your friends or family members can use every day. When in doubt, you can simply put smaller presents together to make up a larger, more meaningful gift.
Gift an Experience
In case you are still feeling a little stuck, go ahead and find something that the two of you can do together. It may be a class, or anything else where you can enjoy each other’s company. In short, you will be able to give them the gift of friendship.

Friendship is something that everyone needs. Success is nothing without friends. You share life, happiness and sadness. A friend is someone you can depend on in a time of need and that can trust you with every secret he or she has.
So what happens when a friendship of eight years is broken over something out of their control Does that mean it was never a true friendship to begin with
My friend and I met in high school and have known each other for nearly eight years. What happened recently broke our lifelong friendship.
This makes me think about what friendship really means. I always thought my friend and I could get through any argument, fight, or the sadness of life. We promised each other we'd always be friends, through thick and thin. We even joked about how we would sit in a circle and laugh at some jokes when we had grandchildren. We always laughed at every little thing.
But then her grandfather passed away (去世) and suddenly our friendship was nothing. It happened so suddenly that I never found out about it until I discovered a note she had written on the Internet. I was sad and hurt that she would post (发帖子) what I told her for other people to see. I understand that she was sad and wanted to vent (发泄) her sadness, but I wish she'd kept everything between us.
I don't understand why she broke our friendship, and I don't think I ever will. I think friendship means we'll always forgive each other for our mistakes. I hope that finally I'll find that true friend who will always be there for me, and I there for her.

I live in New York city and my neighbours are people I don’t know. My city, neighborhood and block are filled with people who don’t know me, don’t care to know me, and don’t talk to me. I find that it’s pretty hard to love people you don’t even know. And sometimes, we all, myself included, use that as an excuse not to try. I read Brendan’s story recently and was moved.
One day, Brendan, a young man in New York was on the way back to his Brooklyn apartment when a homeless woman called Jackie asked him for money. He said that he had no money. By the end of the week, she asked two more times, and each time he answered “No”. The woman looked sad, so Brendan said, “I am on my way to a job interview. If I get the job, I’ll take you out for lunch.”
Brendan got the job. He took Jackie out for lunch. That was when their friendship began. They built a strong friendship by supporting each other and spending their birthdays, holidays and difficult times together, over a period of eight years. When Brendan’s heater broke, Jackie made a blanket for him. Two days later when he told her that he had lost his job, she left and returned minutes later, bring him food to eat. She continued to do that during the whole winter. Even with so little, she often gave back.
Over these years, Jackie moved from the streets and subway stations into a halfway house, and is now moving into an apartment. To celebrate it, Brendan wanted to do something special for Jackie. He went with her and helped her to pick out everything she would need for her new apartment.

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son. Suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. "The door to his room is always shut," Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. "She used to cuddle up (依偎) against me on the sofa and talk," said Mark. "Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is understanding which time is which."
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what's on their mind. "In fact, parents are first on the list," said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. "This completely changes during the teen years," Riera explained. "They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last."
Parents who know what's going on in their teenagers' lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental(思想的) break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.
32."The door to his room is always shut" suggests that the son ________.

A.Teenagers talk a lot with their friends. B.Teenagers do not understand their parents.
C.Teenagers talk little about their own lives. D.Teenagers do not talk much with their parents.

Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends—532, actually, if you count up her friends online. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Kaylee’s online friendships could be making her lonely That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.
Could this be true During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of his time is spent on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of the App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual worlds, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,” says Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you didn’t need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. You needed someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.
36.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To summarize the text. B.To tell about true friends.
C.To bring up a discussion. D.To encourage online friendship.
37.What does the underline part “in the flesh” mean in Paragraph 3
A.in any case B.in person C.in a hurry D.in advance
38.What is Katie’s attitude towards online communication
A.Positive B.Unconcerned C.Confused D.Worried
39.What view does Rosen hold
A.It’s wise to turn to friends online.
B.It’s easier to develop friendships in reality.
C.Teenagers need focus on real-world friendships.
D.Social media help people stay closely connected.

I was to leave for the West the next day. We agreed to meet here again 20 years later.” said the man, striking a match to light his cigar. “Hope your friend comes around.” said the policeman, passing on along his beat.
20 minutes later a tall man in a long overcoat went directly to the waiting man. “Is that you, Bob ” he asked doubtfully. “Is that you, Jimmy Wells ” cried the man. “Oh!” exclaimed the new arrival. “It’s Bob! How has the West treated you, old sport ” “It’s given me everything. You’ve changed lots — so tall by two or three inches.” “I grew a bit.” “Doing well here ” “Moderately. Come on, let s go to my place and have a good talk. ”
The two hit the road, arm in arm, with one boasting his career in the West. At the corner stood a drug store, brilliant with electric lights. When they came into this glare, each of them stared at the others’ face.
The man from the West stopped and released his arm, “You’re not Jimy Wells. 20 years is not long enough to change a man’s nose from a Roman to a pug.”
“It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one,” said the tall man. “You’ve been under arrest for ten minutes, ‘Silky’ Bob. Chicago thinks you may have dropped over our way and wires us she wants to have a chat with you. Before going to the station, here’s a note to you from Patrol man Wells.”
The man unfolded the note, reading:

A new study proves when their teenagers cut back on social media use, they seem to feel better about themselves. Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University, conducted the study. She said the research came from her own personal experiences. “I couldn’t help but compare myself when I was using social media, making me unsatisfied with my self-image.” Thai says. Although she was aware that social media posts often presented images that can be unrealistic in real life, it still had a negative impact on her. So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reduced time on social media would increase self-confidence in body image.
They hired a few hundred volunteers, aged 14-18, all of whom had experienced signs of anxiety or depression, which could make them easier to be affected by social media. Half of the teens were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media freely, which averaged about three hours per day. The researchers gave the teens surveys at the beginning and end of the study. It included statements such as “I’m pretty happy about the way I look,” and “I am satisfied with my weight.”
Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance satisfaction improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5 point scale. “This may seem like a small change, but any change in such a short period of time is striking,” the authors say.

Saying farewell to someone you love, even for a night, can be difficult, much less saying goodbye for a lifetime or forever in death. Juliet bid Romeo adieu (再见) for the evening with the words, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships.
Relationships are based on feelings, emotions, and passion. Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time. People spend time with the people they like. The more one person likes another person, the closer the relationship becomes. Each person in the relationship receives an emotional benefit from knowing the other person.
Saying goodbye means separating from the people who make up a significant part of your emotional identity. Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company.
The sweet side of saying goodbye is the emotional fulfillment of being in a close relationship. The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings. We seek the love and comfort of other people. Loneliness devastates the human condition and leads to sadness. Sad people will do anything they can to find fulfilling relationships. Likewise, happy people will do anything they can to maintain or enhance relationships. Herein lies the essential point of the emotional problem.
The more intense relationships become, the more devastating the emotional loss that is felt upon separation. The exhilaration of relationships cannot be truly measured without experiencing the overwhelming loss of a deep emotional connection.
Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. If it doesn’t hurt to say goodbye, perhaps it wasn’t worth saying hello.
52.Which of the word group can create the same effect as “sweet sorrow”
A.icy cold B.clicking sound C.deafening silence D.endless speech

C.Comforting friends with love and intense feelings.
D.Being a thoughtful person by standing in others’ shoes.

【导语】本文是一篇议论文,通过莎翁戏剧著名台词“Parting is such sweet sorrow”引出对人际关系的讨论,阐述分离的痛苦是衡量感情的尺度。
52.推理判断题。根据第一段中“ Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships.(甜蜜的悲伤是一种矛盾修辞法。但这种看似矛盾的现象在人际关系中却是真实存在的。)”可知,本句中sweet sorrow是一种矛盾的修辞方法。C选项中“deafening silence(震耳欲聋的沉默)”与题干中的“甜蜜的悲伤”一致,构成的是修辞的方式是矛盾的修饰方式。故选C。
53.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company.(与你有深厚情感联系的人分离,即使是暂时的缺席,都会带来悲伤,因为你将无法再享受他们的陪伴。)”可知,分离是告别时悲伤的部分。故选D。
54.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time,(深厚的友谊和爱的关系是由情感依恋的水平来衡量的。情绪会随着时间的推移而加剧)”以及第四段中“The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings.(一起度过的时光在情感上是有益的,尤其是如果那个人被视为灵魂伴侣。人类是社会生物)” 可知,一起度过的时光在情感上是有益的即与他人建立深厚的情感联系能使人在社交生活中获得情感上的满足。故选B。
55.主旨大意题。 通读全文以及根据最后一段中“Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. (尽可能地享受和你在一起的人的陪伴;知道在一段关系结束时你会感受到的痛苦是衡量这段关系的真正标准。如果说再见无伤大雅,那也许不值得说你好)”可知,文章通过“告别”带给人看似矛盾的情感体验这一现象,通过对比等手段,深入分析了痛苦这种情感体验在人际关系疏密中的作用。B选项“The pain of separation is the measure of relationships.(分离的痛苦是衡量感情的尺度。)”概括文章主要内容。故选B。
