阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写内段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: "Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as the sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again." I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线) through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. "I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him," he explained uncomfortably. "I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide."
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Yesterday a heat wave hit the town. "It's too hot! Let's go for a swim after we finish our chores(家务活) at home!" Joseph complained to his little brother, Loren. As the boys walked toward the Little Colorado River, they saw Sam and Frank, who ran to join them. "Swimming's just what we need to cool off!" Sam said, kicking a rock.
"Sure it is," Frank agreed. Then he looked at the field they were passing. There were many round watermelons in Farmer Davis's patch(果园).“Hey, Joseph,” said Frank, "do you have the courage to climb over that fence and get us a ripe(成熟的) watermelon "
"I don't know," said Joseph.
Loren looked uncomfortable. "I don't think that's a good idea."
"Come on," said Frank, pushing Joseph toward the fence. "No one will ever know." Then Frank started to climb the wooden fence. Joseph felt bad but climbed the fence and jumped with Frank into the watermelon patch.
Joseph took the closest melon and raced back to the fence. The other boys laughed and took turns to carry the heavy melon as they ran to the river. Finally they broke open the watermelon. The sticky sweet juice was delicious! But Joseph regretted what he had done and wished he hadn't taken the melon.
On the way home, they finished off the last piece of the melon just as they passed the watermelon patch again. Joseph lowered his head quickly when he saw Farmer Davis in the field. He waved at the boys, who quickly threw the melon rind(皮)to the side of the road. Davis looked upset as the boys hurried by. Joseph felt terrible. It was wrong to take the watermelon. He knew he had to tell Farmer Davis what they had done and ask for forgiveness(宽恕).
That evening Farmer Davis visited Joseph and Loren at their house. "One of my biggest watermelons went missing," he said. "And I am wondering if you boys happened to see anyone in my field as you passed by today."

Captain America had always been a hero for Timothy White during his childhood. White dressed up as Captain America for conventions, parades and the local Anti-violence Superhero Day. As a teenager, he once knocked fiercely in the door of a house that was on fire to see if anyone was trapped inside. Fortunately, the house was empty.
However, things were quite different this time. If Timothy White Jr. were Captain America, perhaps one throw of the superhero's trademark shield (盾牌) could have saved the day. But this was real life. When he spotted trouble on this September afternoon he wasn't wearing his costume and couldn't fall back on any superpowers.
It was rush hour in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. White, 38, was driving home from the non-profit he and his mother run called AMiracle4Sure, which helped formerly imprisoned individuals readapt to society. To get some fresh air from the long drive,he kept his window down on this autumn day. Suddenly, he noticed a gray four door pickup on the opposite side of the street. The truck was going 10 to 15 mph. It was hard to miss, since it was circling and tilting (倾斜) into the road before course-correcting, only to tilt into the road again.
"What an annoying driver!"White murmured. But as the truck drew closer, White took a glance at it. This time he got a good look at the problem:The driver appeared to be asleep! Worse still, they were coming up to a busy street. Pretty soon, this guy's going to crash into a house and kill himself or somebody else, White thought.
While many people would have kept on driving, that's not how White did—his girlfriend refers to him as Captain Harrisburg because of his permanent willingness to help people out. He had to stop that vehicle before anything terrible happened.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, "I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp." And then she walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but the forest and, far beyond, a snow-capped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
"Tom!" she cried. "Help!"
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling(滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hoped it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard the sound of a helicopter. Is that for me Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them down if they came back again.

7.阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
A Four-legged Guardian Angel
Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach, Saskatchewan. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job with the provincial government, and now our financial situation was grim. In despair, I had finally put the home on the market, and a real estate agent was due to show up later that day. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane (大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could bear.
Deep in despair, I sat typing up resumes and cover letters. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my thirteen-month-old son, Forrest, as he lay on the carpet, playing near our big, gentle nanny-dog, Brigitte. It seemed as if Brigitte was always meant to be in this family and she turned out to be a perfect companion.
Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
Thinking of these, I couldn't help heaving a sigh and went straight back to work. However, I hadn't typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking furiously and running back and forth to the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.
I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realized Forrest was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.

Jordan yawned as he cycled around the track. He glanced at his watch—4:00 in the morning! And the race was far from over. "Where is Devin " Jordan called to his father. "It is time to switch!"
Jordan kept pedaling(踩踏板). Riders could stay on the bike as long as they wanted, but all four members of each relay team had to participate in the 12-hour race. And bikes had to stay in motion except for repairs, such as fixing a dropped chain. Jordan, Devin, Tara and Bryan had decided they'd each be on the bike for three one-hour shifts. That would allow them to sleep longer in the tents.
Jordan had barely slept during the first break. He was definitely ready to climb into his sleeping bag now. Devin finally ran out of the boys’ tent at 4:15. "Sorry—Iover slept!" Devin said as Jordan hopped off(跳下) the bike. Jordan drank some water as he watched Devin sprint away(冲出去).
Thirty-six teams started the Overnight Bike Classic at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Officials kept track of the number of laps(圈) each team covered. Jordan had drawn a little closer to second place, but the leader was several laps ahead.
"Great work," Jordan's dad said. "Try to take a nap. Before you do, wake Bryan." Jordan pushed Bryan's red sleeping bag. "Devin's out on the track," Jordan said. "You are next." Jordan suddenly felt a wave of exhaustion pass over him.
Jordan slept like a rock until Bryan shook his shoulder at 6:50 am. "We are in fourth, not far behind second and third." "How far ahead is Team Green " Jordan asked. "More than four laps," Bryan said. "It is up to you."
Tara was finishing strong, moving into third place as Jordan fought to keep his eyes open. Jordan grabbed the handlebars and hopped on. He passed several riders and eventually ranked second. Jerry Myers, the Team Green captain who seemed definitely the champion, held a steady pace to lead the race. Jordan thought to himself, "The championship was out of reach, but coming in second would be great too."

1.答案:
Para 1:
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
Para 2:
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.
2.答案:
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. I quietly said, "David, if you don't want to run today, no one is going to make you do. But if you're not running because you're afraid someone is going to laugh, that's not a good enough reason. There will always be someone who will laugh and say mean words. There are people like that, and that's just the way it is. The real question is whether you are going to let those few people stop you from doing something you really want to do. Are you going to let them get in your way If you really want to run, David, then you run!" I held my breath as David took this in. Then he looked at the field and said with fierce but quiet determination, "I'm gonna run."
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The starter's gun sounded, and David lurched forward with the other children. But he had only gone a few metres before he tripped and fell flat on the ground. My heart sank. As I started to shout encouragement, other voices around me appeared too. David picked himself up and started again. This was David's run. He had worked for it, and he wouldn't give up! At last, he raised his arms in triumph as he crossed the finish line to wild cheers and applause. At the end of the year, the track coach asked the class to nominate one of their classmates for the athletic award for their grade. Without hesitation the whole class voted for David, saying that no one had worked harder for that award than he.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father’s appearing was like a savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, "Happy Mother’s Day!" Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.

Paragraph 1:
Joseph looked at his shoes and said in a low voice, "We were with some other boys, and I took a watermelon from your field. We took it to the river and all of us ate it together." Farmer Davis said sadly, "Taking a melon that you didn't grow is stealing." "I'm really sorry," said Joseph. "I don't have any money, but I could do some chores to make it up to you." "I ate some too," said Loren. "I'll give you a hand."
Paragraph 2:
Farmer Davis thought for a minute. "Come to my field tomorrow morning. I think I can find some work for you." That night Joseph regretted having taken something that didn't belong to him. He decided not to do such things the next time. He felt a little comfortable thinking that he could do something to make up for his mistake. The next morning he would go to Davis's field and do whatever Davis asked him to do. And he wouldn't complain about the extra work or the heat.

It was getting closer and closer,so he began to speed up.White shouted loudly and pressed his horn to wake up the driver but in vain.At the critical moment, an idea hit him. Without hesitation, White pulled over and ran around to the driver's side. He jumped in, took hold of the steering wheel and caused it to stop right before it rushed into the busy street. Seeing the pale face of the driver, he called the police.
An ambulance soon arrived and took the driver to a hospital. White assisted the medical team and accompanied them to the hospital. After careful examination,it was comforting to find there was nothing serious with the driver. When the driver woke up, he thanked White from the bottom of his heart. Paragraph 1:
But no more helicopters came and it was dark. Immediately, absolute darkness ruled the forest. Jane, exhausted and scared, lay down near a stone, missing her family at a distance. All the fantastic memories crowded in and she couldn't help crying, "Hadn't I quarreled with Tom, walked away and climbed to the high place, I wouldn't be trapped in this awful place and confronted with the danger of dying." She regretted her behaviour with endless anxieties, and then became asleep with tears in her eyes.
Paragraph 2:
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Weak as she was, she struggled to her feet, continuing searching for assistance. To her great joy, a helicopter was flying overhead again. Eager and excited, she waved her yellow blouse and spared no effort to yell so as to attract its attention. Fortunately, she was eventually noticed and brought into the helicopter. There she saw her husband, a man staring at her, wearing an expression of relief. As tightly as possible, she hugged him and was too thrilled to say anything. Besides, they agreed never to quarrel again, determining to live the life to the fullest.
7.答案:
There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, dive into the pool. Then to my horror, I caught sight of Forrest's yellow sleeper. Brigitte was bravely doing her best to keep him afloat by holding on to his sleeper with her mouth. At the same time, she was desperately trying to swim to the shallow end. Only then did I realize that Forrest had somehow opened the door, wandered out and fallen into the pool. In a split second, I dove in, lifted my precious baby out and carried him inside. Hands shaking, I called 911 and we were rushed to the hospital immediately, where the doctor kept him for observation for one night.
Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital. Back home, once Brigitte saw him, she barked with apparent joy and wouldn't let Forrest out of her sight. In time she settled down, but remained dedicated to Forrest and followed him everywhere, concerned about his safety. Even when Forrest was asleep, Brigitte crammed herself under the crib, keeping a vigil. Our dog was indeed an angel, erasing any despair I might have had about losing our home. A house could always be replaced, but knowing we had each other around was the greatest blessing of all. I was grateful she was part of our lives, who I would never give up.
8.答案:
"Jor-dan! Jor-dan!" he felt a burst of confidence as his teammates shouted out his name. Thus he cycled as fast as possible, sparing no effort to catch up with Jey. All of a sudden, Jerry pedaled slowly and even stopped unexpectedly, which made Jordan aware that his bike chain came off. Jerry had no choice but to repair it. A few minutes later, Jordan pedaled past the Team Green captain, only to see Jerry's eyes twinkled with determination. It was the amazing spirit Jerry showed when faced with a dilemma that stimulated and inspired Jordan to try his best.
The lead was less than a lap now—three quarters. At this point, Jerry's bike was fixed. As a consequence, he immediately hurried back onto the track. In the meanwhile, Jordan felt a strange mixture of anxiety and disappointment. However, instead of losing heart, Jordan took a deep breath and struggled to rush to the finish line. The atmosphere was charged with tension and excitement. Exhausted and thrilled, Jordan did his best to realize his full potential. In spite of the fact that he failed to be the winner, he had an overwhelming sense of achievement. "Coming in second is great. I break the boundary and push myself to the limits." He sighed with relief, wearing a broad smile.
