As Ruslan and his friend fished, they suddenly spotted three creatures in the water. It was a mother bear and her two cubs, swimming along trying to cross the lake. “This in itself was not an unusual sight, as bears are extremely common in the Russian wilderness,” said Ruslan.
But soon the men realized something was not right. As the mother swam confidently toward one of the islands, her cubs were starting to struggle. Ruslan and his friend could not believe what they were seeing. The two fishermen were faced with the very real possibility of watching the young bears drown. It was something they couldn’t allow to happen. Ruslan didn’t want to approach the cubs while their mother was still within reach, fearing she might turn around and attack them and their boat. But as the seconds ticked along, he and his friend watched the cubs become more desperate. Finally he decided that when the mother was at a safe distance, they sailed toward the cubs, slowly not to frighten them. To their amazement, it seemed as though the young bears knew this was a lifeline.
The cubs swam close enough to the boat to put their paws on the side. But they kept slipping as they couldn’t get a strong hold to pull themselves onto the boat. The men decided to use their fishing net to help pull the cubs onto the boat. But it would not be easy—two totally wet bear cubs were infinitely heavier than the fish the net was designed to hold.
But this was their best chance, so they had to try. Ruslan jumped into the water while his friend took the net and slowly slid it under the cubs, hoping to pull them up. The cubs turned toward the men and looked straight at them, seemingly acknowledging their efforts to help. Then, an incredible thing happened. The cubs made it onto the boat at last.

B. The cubs made it onto the boat by themselves.
C. The drowning cubs were saved with the fishing net.

A different kind of food service app is allowing loyal customers to buy restaurant food at a low price before it goes into the waste bin.
Too Good To Go provides buyers with a bag of nearly wasted, but perfectly good food for takeaways as a way to cut back on food waste and help support the restaurant industry. Unlike other apps of a similar type that can allow customers to pick and choose which items they want to save, Too Good To Go offers only bags of whatever food the restaurants have. People will think it has a true enterprise spirit. The app is one of the several winners of Fast Company’s 2021 World Changing Ideas Award, which reports that 40% of the food in America is wasted.
It’s impossible to know how much food really will end up in landfills, but it’s possible to know how many meals Too Good To Go has prevented from going there. Originally sold only in a few selected American cities, 200,000 meals have been sold, and these meals can be thrown into the garbage in a few hours. And over 1,500 restaurants have signed up in cities like New York, Boston, and Los Angeles. At present,150,000 orders are going out of the door per day in 15 countries, across a user base of around 37 million people, saving incredible food waste.
It is also easier for the restaurants to deal with the leftovers since it’s not likely to guess and predict what will be available at the end of any night. Decomposing food in landfills is a major source of methane, which can cause climate-related damage before completely decomposing after a decade.
“We think we can save more than 2 million meals from the trash in the U. S. in 2021, avoiding thousands of tons of emissions,” said Lucie Basch, co-founder of Too Good To Go.
28. What makes Too Good To Go different from other food service apps
A. Its honour awarded by Fast Company. B. Its enterprise spirit of pursuing perfection.
C. Its restrictions on consumers’ food choices. D. Its service for takeaways with eco-friendly bags.
29. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. Too Good To Go’s potential in future.
B. Too Good To Go’s advantages over other apps.
C. Too Good To Go’s effect on the restaurant industry.
D. Too Good To Go’s achievement in saving food waste.
30. What does the underlined word “Decomposing” probably mean
A. Breaking up. B. Breaking down. C. Breaking in. D. Breaking out.
31. What is the purpose of this text
A. To introduce a distinctive food service app.
B. To promote Too Good To Go to the world.
C. To compare Too Good To Go to other apps.
D. To call on people to cut down on food waste.

Researchers found that those with strong, close bonds with their friends at age 15 were more likely to be healthy and happy later.Importantly, popularity—defined as lots of people liking you generally, but not closely—wasn’t found to have the same benefit as close friends.“Close friendship strength in mid-adolescence predicted relative increases in self-worth and decreases in anxiety and depressive symptoms by early adulthood,” according to the authors of the study.Popularity actually had the opposite—negative—effect.
The University of Virginia researchers who ran the study followed the 169 subjects every year for a decade, which means that their data are pretty strong. The scientists weren’t relying on recollections(回忆) of the types of relationships people had years later; they got data in real time from their subjects as they grew and matured.
Each year, the subjects spoke to the researchers about their friends—who their besties(好朋友) were and what their relationships were like with other friends.Through interviews and assessments, they were asked about “anxiety, social acceptance, self-worth and symptoms of depression; teens’ close friends also reported on their friendships and were interviewed,” according to the release.
Then the researchers analyzed the 10 years of data to understand how people handle stress over time. Those who were merely popular did worse on several measures of mental health compared to people with strong high school friendships.
The study shows that being well-liked by a large group of people cannot take the place of forming deep, supportive friendships.Because these experiences stay with us, over and above what happens later. As technology makes it increasingly easy to build a social network of ordinary friends, focusing time and attention on cultivating close connections with a few individuals should be a priority.
32.What makes the result of this study reliable
A. A variety of experiments. B. Ten years of following up.
C. Cooperation of participants. D. The high level of the researchers.
33.What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 3
A. How the data are collected. B. Who are interviewed each year.
C. What the study concentrates on. D. Why close friends are important.
34.Which might be the author’s suggestion
A. Use modern technology. B. Make some close friends.
C. Increase your popularity. D. Make as many friends as possible.
35.In which section of the Internet can you find this text
A. Technology and Life. B. Schools and Families.
C.Health and Psychology. D.Network and Security.

Conscious(有意识的)living is not just a trend. 36 It is about being intentional with everything you do — your words, actions, beliefs, habits, and choices. Accepting conscious living takes some effort, but it is worthwhile. Here are some ways you can achieve this goal.
●Be conscious about your time.
Time is the most precious thing because there is no way to live a moment again. 37 If you waste your precious hours doing negative things, you will regret it later. The first step for living consciously is to be wise about your time. Be selective about things you spend it on, and allocate(分配)it for positive activities.
● 38
You cannot achieve them unless you understand your needs and intentions. It is easier said than done because most people fail to make an effort to know themselves. Spend time thinking over and knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Once you know yourself better, you can create a plan to work towards becoming more patient, honest, and forgiving.
●Learn to be grateful.
Gratitude takes you a long way towards conscious living. It opens you up to a happier and a fulfilled mindset. Most people are unhappy because they see only the negatives in life. However, everyone has something to be grateful for. Writing a gratitude journal is a good start for counting your blessings. 39
●Believe in yourself.
It is the key to making the right choices, yet not regretting the wrong ones. 40 Spending time alone and thinking deeply are effective measures that enable you to identify the inner voice. Care for it and follow it to make it stronger down the line.
Conscious living is a skill you need to learn as you go, so be willing to make the effort and master it. You will absorb it soon and be a happier person in the long run.
A.Know yourself better.
B.Accept the person you are.
C.Life can be a lot better with the right decisions.
D.It is a healthy choice that enables you to be happy.
E.Pick it as a daily habit, and you will notice the difference.
F.The way you spend your time determines the course of your life.
G.The best way to build self-belief is by reflecting on your own thoughts.

Everybody pushed him away. With a big black birthmark on his face, Thomas never had any friends. He was lonely, as if the world could never see the light. He used to love acting dramas in front of his mother, but now, he thinks he does not have the right to do so with such appearance.
This terrible life has begun since Thomas went to school. However, everything changed since that evening.
Thomas was sitting on the chair, staring out of the window while trying to forget the names that his classmates had called him earlier at school. The tree outside was surrounded by dried, lifeless leaves, with branches lowering themselves to the ground. It was so quiet that only the sound of the wind blowing the leaves away could be heard. A knock on the door broke the silence. "Thomas, here's a letter for you, " Mom said while pushing the door open. Just as Thomas reached out for the letter, Mom immediately pulled it away and said: "Let me read it for you. "
Dear Thomas,
How are you I'm your aunt. I know that you feel sad because of your birthmark, but you cannot change that. Therefore, instead of feeling bad for your appearance, you should stand up for yourself. Go do astonishing things that would change everybody's thoughts about you. Prove yourself. I believe in you.
Regards,
Aunt Janice
Thomas felt a wave of warmness in his heart. That night, he carried a smile on his face to his dreams. After that day, Thomas received more letters from relatives, encouraging him to be brave to do what he wants. Mom would read out every single letter, each time with a lovely expression. Thomas realized that there were so many people caring and loving him. He heard a voice telling him that he should prove himself to the world.
With the encouragement his family had given him, Thomas joined the drama class in his school and had the chance to perform drama in his school. Unexpectedly, the whole school cheered for him and praised his acting skills. The teachers later signed him up to represent the school for an acting competition. Despite of his appearance, he got the first prize. His confidence grew.

读后续写
After all the things Thomas had gone through, he still received letters from relatives. Mom would always bring letters in and read them aloud to him. Coincidentally, the letters seemed to come very timely whenever he met challenges or doubt about himself. As he stared at the view outside the window, he saw the tree once again, but with fresh green leaves at the tips of the branches, which are reaching high into the blue sky. There are thousands of beautiful flowers around the tree. "That tree, is me, " thought Thomas.
One day, Thomas went home from school with a tired body. He dragged himself towards Mom's bedroom door. He opened the door quietly and saw Mom sleeping on the desk. There was an opened letter on Mom's desk. He walked towards the desk, and saw the letter was unfinished. Then, a box with heart shape patterns caught Thomas's eyes. As he opened it with confusion, letters that relatives sent to him were lying in there. He read the letters one by one, and realized the words were Mom's writing. Immediately, Thomas understood all of it. He could never forget how these letters of love had changed him.

W: No, I am afraid of the neighbor’s angry cat. It attacked me yesterday!
Text 3
W: Mom said it’s going to rain, so bring an umbrella.
M: The weather report said it was supposed to miss us and hit the northern towns. I’ll be fine without one. Mom’s always worried for no reason.
W: Oh yeah. You’ re going south, right
Text 4
M: I have 50 pages more to read tonight, but it’s already 11:00. I really need some coffee. It’ll take me at least two hours, and I need it done by 10:00 tomorrow morning.
W: Just wake up at 7:00. You’ll have plenty of time then.

M: How long have you been playing that game for It seems like hours.
W: I just got it and can’t put it down. You know how I love fitting pieces together. This game has fruit and animals that you have to match up.
M: At least it’s not another gun or piano game. You had better not miss your job interview, though. That would make a poor impression on the hiring manager. When are you going to get ready

W: OK... Let me give you a better idea. Working here is like being in a family in some ways. You know how children get punished when they don’t clean their rooms, or when they go out with friends before they finish their homework
M: Yes, I can relate to that.
W: Well, that’s more like how it is to work at Trader Joe’s. The employees are the children ... and I’m the mother.

M: I started when I was a kid about 12. We stayed with the circus for about 10 years. Shortly after we moved the show to Normandy, my older sister broke her leg. Then my parents decided maybe it was time for us to retire. My sister got hurt when she was about 23. I was a year younger at the time and didn’t want to leave.
W: That’s too bad she got hurt. Do you still do performances
M: I consult these days. I actually have to travel to India next week to look at the safety equipment of a circus. It will be the first time returning there after my sister got hurt. She lives there managing a hotel.

Text 10
Too often the modern trend is for people to be separated from each other. Cars have taken us off the streets, where we used to stop to chat. Television has planted us firmly in our living rooms, instead of going out with other people. We must strike back against the selfishness and greed of our modern world and help our fellow human beings. Helping someone has many advantages. It makes you feel better about yourself, improves someone’s life and makes the world a better place. Don’t know where to start Well, just smile and be friendly. Sometimes a simple little thing like this can put a smile and a warm feeling in someone else’s heart. Call a charity to volunteer. The next time you see someone pulled over with a flat tire or in need of help, stop and ask how you can help. Take the time to teach someone a skill you fort someone in grief.
