Beijing has become the first city ever to hold both Summer and Winter Olympic Games after hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics with co-host city Zhangjiakou, bringing snow and ice sports into public spotlight. Now, let’s take a look at some of the most popular events in the Winter Olympic Games.
Figure skating
Figure skating is one of the most popular sports at the Winter Olympics, in which ice skaters, singly or in pairs, perform freestyle movements of jumps, spins, lifts, and footwork in an elegant manner. The figure skating competition is one of the fiercest(最激烈的) at the Winter Olympics — one slight error, and a competitor’s chance of a medal goes up in smoke. To win the game, the skater has to perform without errors.
Curling
Curling is one of the most unique sports at the Winter Olympics — a winter sport played by two teams of four players on a rectangular sheet of ice. The two teams take turns to slide(滑动) large round flat stones towards a target. Members of each team use brooms to sweep the surface of the ice in the path of the stone to control its speed and direction. And while curling may be a “slow” sport, it’s still full of skill, suspense and excitement!
Snowboarding
Snowboarding is a popular winter sport that involves sliding downhill on snow with a snowboard firmly attached to a rider's feet. The sport is said to have been inspired by surfing, skiing and skateboarding, as an alternative to alpine skiing(高山滑雪). Ice hockey
Ice hockey is a game between two teams who wear skates and compete on an ice rink(溜冰场). Each team usually has six players. The UK has many strange traditions. One is Pancake Day. This tradition comes from Shrove Tuesday. It is a Christian tradition before the star of Lent. On that day, people across the UK make and eat pancakes in order to use up the food they have in their houses before the start of Pancakes are large and thin and can be topped with either salty or sweet ingredients. People make pancakes in their homes but you might also find that some schools or businesses hold special Pancake Day events, one of which is pancake race.
In a typical pancake race, competitors have to run holding a frying pan with a pancake in it. As competitors run, they have to throw the pancake in the air so that it flips and lands back in the pan on the other side. The winner is the first to reach the finish line, although they should also be careful to make sure that the pancake is complete and that it hasn't broken along the way.
One of the most famous pancake races is the Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race. The race is a competition between two teams—one team of Members of Parliament (MPs), and one team of journalists—most of whom take part in the race wearing their work suits! The race is shown on the news and covered on TV all around the world. And as well as a bit of fun, the race is also held for a good cause. It draws people's attention to the charity Rehab, which works with people with disabilities and others who suffer from social exclusion.
Another important part of the race is the official starter chosen to announce the start of the race. This is seen as a prestigious role and is usually given to a British news presenter. But whoever is chosen usually has a hard time trying to control the race-the MPs are known for cheating every year!

Dry January has some running-related roots. Back in 2011, a woman living in the U. K. named Emily Robinson signed up for her first half marathon. In preparation for the race, she decided to cut out alcohol—specifically during her January training, creating a dry month. Her experiment was a success: She reported losing weight, feeling increased energy, and sleeping better. But the Dry January tradition can be traced further back to 1942—Finland started the program Raitis Tammikuu to aid in the war effort against the Soviet Union.
Thanks to these two events, Dry January has become a global phenomenon, with millions participating each year.
Why would you do such a thing during the longest, darkest, coldest month of the year Beyond strengthening a New Year’s resolution, perhaps you want to explore a new you in the new year. Some unexpected benefits may come of this, too, like improved running performance. You might even start a trend in your friend circle or discover new ways to spend your free time. The benefits of taking on a Dry January challenge are endless: eating less junk food, improved digestion, healthier-looking skin, better sleep, the ability to complete harder workouts, and clear-headedness.
It’s fair to say that most elements in alcoholic cocktails aren’t packed with protein, nor are they high in fiber or loaded with vitamins—so, when you cut out alcohol during Dry January, you’re cutting out unneeded calories that contain little nutritional value.
In the absence of alcohol, you may notice you have more energy for physical activities, especially running. So not only will cutting out cocktails get rid of missed workouts, actually making it to the gym or a run helps release endorphins, which create happy feelings.
“Lessening alcohol can be a helpful way for clients to achieve physical and emotional health because it helps us be more awake in our lives,” says Sadie Kurzban, CEO and founder of 305 Fitness.

As a kid, I was always chubby (圆胖的). In college I started blowing up. It got out of control when I went to law school.
I’d made a decision a thousand times: I’m going to lose weight now. But what motivated me to get serious about it was turning 30. I weighed 414 pounds. I was always tired. Some of my family members have suffered from heart disease, and I was scared. I also wanted to look better. So after my birthday, I walked into the office of a weight loss doctor.
She was very understanding. Her focus was on balanced meals and she wanted me to exercise.
Walking was all I could do at first. I started by walking a few blocks and gradually increased the distance, until one weekend, I found myself saying, “Wow, this seems pretty easy.” So I started to run.
I was losing nine or ten pounds a month, and I had more energy. I started to think about the New York City Marathon. For years, I watched the runners and thought, “This looks like fun, but I could never do that.” But now I realized that maybe I could. I joined the New York Road Runners. I ran a 10 km, then a half marathon. I still wasn’t confident I could run a full 26 miles. But I told myself I was going to do it, no matter what.
By my 33rd birthday, I was down to 180 pounds. I started formally training for the marathon. And on the morning of November 1, I stood on the Verrazano Bridge in Staten Island with more than 40,000 other runners, waiting for the event to start.
It was unbelievable to have the audience cheering me on, handing me cups of water. And I crossed the finish line. My friends sprayed me with beer, as if I’d won the Super Bowl. And at that moment, I knew: If I set my mind to something, nothing is impossible.

My dad, Greg Newman, had wanted to be a race car driver, but things didn’t work out for him. So I guess having a son who could become a race car driver was the next best thing. Don’t get me wrong — Dad didn’t push me into racing. In fact, when I was about 10 years old, my dad was afraid that driving a car wasn’t my dream. So he took the racing away from me. I wasn’t very happy with that decision. It wasn’t long before Dad realized that racing was what I loved.
At four, Dad bought me my first Quarter Midget (袖珍赛车) and that’s really where it started for us. Back then, Dad coached me. He would stick out (伸出) his foot in the path of the race car, and then tell me to exactly hit his foot. By repeating this again and again, Dad believed that I would be faster and sharper on the race track.
Dad worked really long hours at his car repair business to make money so that I could race each weekend. I can remember that every night before he turned off the lights in the garage, Dad would tell me: “Don’t forget to kiss your race car good night.” He was trying to teach me that if I show respect, it’s returned. He wanted me to show thankfulness and respect for my race car and for all the hard work that we and many others had put into the dream.
My dad, my mom and my sister gave up a lot of things to help me race. For us, there was no better moment than winning the 50th running of the Daytona 500 in 2018. That evening in February 2018, I knew I had gotten a good push. I could hear the excitement. My father couldn’t speak a word, and when he got to Victory Lane (车道), he nearly knocked me over and gave me such a big hug.

The Tour de France is a very difficult bike race. It lasts over three weeks and covers 3,351 kilometers. Every day, the riders finish a different part of the race, called a "stage". Every stage can have a different winner, and each day, the total time is added up. The person who is leading wears a yellow shirt to show that they are winning. But there're no women in the Tour de France, only men. From 1984 to 2009, there was a women's Tour de France. But over time, the event grew smaller and less challenging. In 2009, it ended completely.
The Tour de France is organized by Amaury Sport Organization(ASO). In 2014, ASO began holding a shorter one or two-day race for women called La Course. But it is by no means a long and challenging race with many stages.
To call attention to the need for a women's Tour de France, a French cycling club has taken or an unusual project called “J-I". As part of J-1, since 2015,a group of women has been riding the exact same course as the men's Tour de France, just one day earlier.
Women won't have to take part in the J-I project in 2022 because ASO has announced that in July of 2022 , they'll be holding the Tour de France Femmes(TDFF)—a Tour de France for women.
It'll be an eight-day race with many stages, which will kick off as soon as the men's Tour de France comes to an end. That's likely to help attract viewers. In the past, the women's race was held just before or during the men's race. Now, all the people who have finished watching the men's race and are still looking for some racing excitement will have a chance to tune in for the women's race.
Christian Prudhomme, who organizes the Tour de France says that earlier versions of the women's Tour de France lost money. This time, they are hoping to set the race up in a way that it'll make money, allowing the event to continue.

If you saw a digital image of yourself running on a virtual treadmill (跑步机), would you feel like going to the gym Probably so, according to a Stanford study showing that personalized avatars can motivate people to exercise and eat right.
Moreover, you are more likely to follow the behavior of an avatar in real life if it looks like you, said Jesse Fox, a researcher at the Stanford Virtual Human Interaction Lab. In her study, she used digital photographs of participants to create personalized avatar bodies.
In Fox’s first test, some participants saw their avatar running on a treadmill. Others saw themselves hanging out in the virtual room or saw a running avatar they didn’t know.
Fox contacted participants a day after the study and found that the people who saw their own avatar running were more likely to exercise (after they left the lab) than the people who saw someone else running or saw themselves just hanging out in the virtual room. In fact, those who watched themselves running were motivated to exercise, usually, a full hour more than the others. They ran, played soccer or worked out at the gym.
“They had imitated their avatar’s behavior,” Fox said.
In another test, some participants ran in place while watching their avatars become thinner, other participants stood still and watched their avatars become heavier, and others saw an unfamiliar avatar either slim (变苗条) or fatten.
“If they saw a person they didn’t know, they weren’t motivated to exercise. But if they saw themselves, they exercised more,” Fox said. “Personalized avatars could be used to motivate healthy behavior. For example, someone on a long-term weight loss schedule could pull out his or her smartphone and track progress by watching the avatar body slim down onscreen.”
34.What did Jesse Fox do for her study
A.She let participants choose avatars according to their body shape.
B.She created personalized digital images for participants.
C.She took different photos to record participants’ changes.
D.She learned about participants’ behavior before her study.
35.What does the underlined word “imitated” in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Stopped. B.Copied. C.Changed. D.Controlled.
36.What can we learn from Jesse Fox’s words in the last paragraph
A.People’s own avatars motivate them more than unfamiliar ones.
B.Avatars can help people develop long-term healthy habits.
C.The research on personalized avatars needs further study.
D.Watching avatars can help people lose weight quickly.
37.What is the best title for the text
A.How to improve avatar technology in smartphones
B.How to make a good connection with our avatars
C.Can avatars influence our personal relationships
D.Can avatars change the way we think and act
Last night I entered a poetry competition. It was very rushed. It was the very last minute and I was unprepared. Yet I really wanted to do it. So, without the support of my family, I got up in front of a group of people and got ready to present my poem. But I didn’t expect to win.
Judges were chosen from the audience by having a bouncy ball thrown out into their midst to see who would catch it. As it is with most competitions, performers had 2 minutes to impress the judges who would then give a score from 0.0 to 10. There were five judges. I was the youngest person in the competition. I’m only 16 and everybody else was about 20—70. My poem went really well. People liked it and I think many were impressed by my courage to get up on stage and perform my own work. In the end, I came third, but I was not disappointed. After all, it was only 0.3 points that separated me from second place.
When it was all over, I was waiting in the car park for my dad to pick me up. One of the judges came up to me and told me I had done a fantastic job. Even though many people had congratulated me, this was different. The lady judge was very sincere. She said, “Here, have the ball, so you remember tonight”. I pulled a smile card out for the woman thanking her for her words and the ball. She was impressed by the card, but no words passed between us. It was a silent understanding. Words would ruin the moment.
My father beeped from the car park so I nodded my goodbye and got in the car, holding in my hand the bouncy ball that changed me.
38.It can be learned from the first paragraph that the author ________.
A.knew one of the five judges B.got lots of support from her family

In the winter of 1953, a powerful jump from a Chinese woman attracted world attention. Twenty-year-old Chinese athlete Zheng Fengrong broke the women’s high jump world record with a leap of 1.77 meters in a Beijing athletic meet on November 17, 1957. The new record, the first women’s world record for the People’s Republic of China, was one centimeter higher than the old mark held by American Mildred McDaniel. The jump also made Zheng the first Asian athlete to break a world track and field record since 1936.

Beatrice De Lavallette was just 17 years old when she was seriously injured and lost both of her legs from the knee down.
The teen spent the next several months in intensive physical therapy, working hard to regain her mobility and independence. She appreciated her family for supporting her and assuring her that life would go on during those dark days.
Her beloved horse, DeeDee, was especially helpful in her recovery. Beatrice grew up in an equestrian (马术的) family. She started riding when she was just a kid, competing in dressage (盛装舞步) by the time she was 12. When her therapist brought DeeDee to the hospital parking lot one day, Beatrice knew her love of horses and riding was the way forward.
“There are no real words to describe that day, but it was the start of my new life,” Beatrice wrote on her website. “A few days later, my occupational therapist drove me to the stables (马厩). I was lifted up onto DeeDee. Someone had to hold onto me, I had no muscle tone or control, but I knew I could do this.” Eager to get back to her “real life”, Beatrice began the challenging task of relearning how to ride. In April 2017, Beatrice was finally able to return to competitions at a show. Now, six years after the accident that almost killed her, Beatrice was selected to represent Team USA at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games!
DeeDee had retired from competing, so Beatrice rode her new horse, a Dutch warmblood named Clarc. The History and Development of Soccer
Soccer, known as football in most of the world, is one of the most popular sports today. Let’s explore its history and how it developed and spread over the years.
It is said that the history of soccer dates back as far as 2500 B.C. in London. In China, the most relevant(相关的) is the Chinese game of Tsu’Chu(Cuju). Records of the game began during the Han Dynasty(206B.C.—220A.D.) and it may have been a training exercise for soldiers. Players kicked a small ball into a net between two bamboo poles. The use of hands was not allowed, but a player could use his feet and other parts of his body.
The modern shape of soccer was formed at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1848, the “Cambridge Rules”were established(建立) at Cambridge University. After they graduated, adult football clubs became more common, players could continue to play the ball.
The Football Association(FA) was created on October 26,1863. Over the years, more clubs joined the FA until the number reached 128 by 1887.
