Teaching Process:
1. Warm-up (5 minutes): Begin the class by asking students if they know anything about China or its ancient civilization. Briefly introduce the topic of the lesson and its relevance to modern China.
2. Presentation (20 minutes):
a. Provide an overview of the Chinese writing system, starting from its origin as a picture-based language and evolving into different forms under different dynasties.
b. Emphasize the importance of the Shang Dynasty in developing a well-developed writing system that later became an important means of uniting Chinese people and culture.
c. Explain how Emperor Qinshihuang's unification of the seven major states led to a more standardized writing system that has continued to evolve until today.
d. Show examples of some common Chinese characters and their meanings, encouraging students to practice writing them.
3. Practice (20 minutes):
a. Distribute worksheets with basic Chinese characters for students to practice writing.
b. Guide students through the stroke order and pronunciation of each character, providing feedback on their writing.
c. Encourage students to practice writing more complex characters and ask them to share their creations with the class.
4. Application (15 minutes):
a. Introduce the concept of Chinese calligraphy and its significance in preserving and promoting Chinese culture.
b. Show examples of famous calligraphers and their works, explaining their techniques and styles.
c. Ask students to create their own calligraphy using basic Chinese characters provided earlier in class.
5. Consolidation (10 minutes): Review the key points discussed during the lesson and encourage students to ask questions or share any thoughts or insights they may have gained from the lesson.
6. Homework: Assign homework for students to continue practicing writing basic Chinese characters and reviewing the meanings of the ones covered in class. Encourage them to research more advanced characters and their usage in literature or other cultural contexts.
