二、阅读理解
Gladys West, the mathematician, was born in 1930 in Virginia and had to help harvest crops on her family’s farm. The hard work started before daybreak and lasted well into the blistering heat of the afternoon. To get out of there, she was going to get an education.
Her parents tried to save some money to send her to college, but unexpected bills kept hitting the fund. Then a teacher announced that the state was going to give a college scholarship to the two top students from her year. Finally, West got the scholarship, allowing her to attend Virginia State College, a historically black university.
West decided to major in mathematics because it was a well-respected subject. It was largely studied by men, but she didn’t take much notice of them as she knew deep in her heart that nothing was getting in her way. After graduating, she became a teacher. A few years later, she returned to the university and earned a master’s degree in mathematics. Then she was offered a job at a naval base in Dahlgren, Virginia. This made her only the second black woman to be hired to work as a programmer at the base.
Despite her intellectual abilities and career success, West felt she was inferior. It was this feeling, deeply rooted and felt, by many African Americans that drove her to work as hard as she could. West determined to commit herself to her work, hoping that by doing it to the best of her ability, she could get recognition for her work.
West did just that. In 1979, she became project manager for the Seasat project, the first satellite that could monitor the oceans. She programmed an IBM 7030 Stretch computer, providing faster calculations for an accurate Earthmodel. This detailed mathematical model of the shape of the Earth was a building block for what would become the GPS orbit. In 1998, aged 68, she intended to focus on her PhD after retirement. She eventually finished her graduation thesis and gained her PhD in public administration and policy affairs in 2000 at the age of 70.

My legs don’t do much because I have a serious disease. They just sit there and look pretty. When people look at me, they only see the chair — my wheelchair. I’ve been in one since I was 3 years old. And it doesn’t matter if I graduate at the top of my class and go to law school. To some people, I’ll always be the girl in the chair.
But I don’t think of myself as the kid who can’t walk. Most of my friends don’t even notice the chair anymore. I’m just the girl they’ve been friends with. My friends are good at lifting me in and out of my small car when we go to the movies. We even took the car to the dance. One of the boys helped me out of the car and all the girls helped me to fix my dress. Even in the crowded school elevator (电梯), there’s always someone around to carry me.
There are a lot of things I can’t do for myself, such as lifting my arms, dressing myself, and feeding myself. Even so, I do very well at school and I always tell myself that I’m just like any other kid in my school.
The truth is that my parents raised me to be proud of my disability (残疾). There are plenty of things I wish I could do differently. I wanted to be a doctor. But that’s not going to work out. So I’ll be a lawyer instead. I also wanted to dance and play soccer. My parents taught me that I’m like this for a reason — to educate people and show them that this disease affects my bones — not my brain. My friend Erica once said to me, “Kennedy, you’re not disabled. You just can’t walk.”

Having spent more than a decade on the dance floor, ROME — Niccolo Filippi, a 23-year-old Italian dance performer, recently decided to explore Chinese culture and its traditional dance forms and believes that this experience will not only boost his career, but also broaden his horizons beyond the world of dance.
His interest in diversifying his skills grew after he stumbled upon a short video of traditional Chinese-styled dance on YouTube. “I saw it as an art that combines tradition and modernity, which was mostly the reason why I liked it,” says Filippi.
Ever since, he has been closely following Chinese dance performers and watching numerous videos to learn more about the traditional style that he admires. “I prefer the traditional style because of its light movements. It also reflects my personality with elegance,” he adds.
Filippi’s chance came when he was invited to perform for a Chinese New Year celebration in the central Italian city of Florence. He has since fully committed himself to the art form, learning several pieces and putting his newfound passion into practice.
“The biggest difference that I found (compared to other disciplines) is the change of mood and emotional expressions among dances,” says Filippi, adding that he needed to shift from the dynamic moves of hip-hop to the graceful and fluid movements of Chinese dance. Despite various obstacles, Filippi’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Two of his friends shared videos of his performances on social media, and the response was overwhelming. One video garnered 500,000 views, while the other received 200,000 views.
Filippi believes that learning about different cultures is priceless, and he sees it as a means of personal growth. “I like to think of a person as a book,” he says. “Embracing different traditions and cultures, such as Chinese culture and many others, is like adding new chapters to my book, making it more diverse and wonderful.”

Few women would consider a pair of scissors to be daily essential that they need to have in their purses. But for Shi Qinling, who is currently working at the Fenglin community cultural center in Shanghai, this tool has been with her everywhere she goes for the past decade —not as a means of self-protection but artistic expression.
“Paper-cutting is not about cutting random patterns from paper. Writers tell stories using words. I do the same, but with a pair of scissors,”Shi said.
Shi developed an interest in craft (工艺) when she was a child. This interest later developed into a passion, one that she decided to pursue by majoring in arts and crafts design during her time in university. After graduation, however, she found herself working at a ship design company as she was unsure about what she wanted to do with her future. About a year later, the Shanghai Arts and Crafts Research Institute offered her a position in their paper-cutting department. Realizing that she still had a love for the craft, she made the career switch.
In 2010, Shi started learning paper-cutting from Xi Xiaoqin, a paper-cutting expert. Three years later, one of her works, The Fighting Fish, won third place at the
Baihua Cup, a competition for Chinese arts and crafts. Over the past decade, Shi’s works have been exhibited in 23 exhibitions.
Although Shi is already so skilled in the craft that she can create an animal pattern in 10 minutes without even having to draw the outlines, she continues to improve her skills every day. The reason is that she views paper-cutting as not just an art form, but also a form of learning about traditional Chinese culture. She thinks she has the responsibility to attract people from different age groups and different fields to try paper-cutting.
29.Why does Shi Qinling always carry a pair of scissors with her

It was a dream born in fire. Andrea Peterson was 5 when she was trapped on the ledge (窗台) of a burning building.
“Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, whose eyes are firm and courageous, along with professional rescue techniques. Seeing this, little Andrea jumped into lifesaving arms and a life-long ambition: She wanted to fight fires as her rescuers did.
She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed naturally the way grown-ups do when a kid says he wants to be an astronaut or a sports star. But this was back in a time when little girls weren’t even allowed to fantasize (幻想) about such grand goals.
“You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you can never be a fireman.”
Indeed, life sidelined her ambitious dream. She was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空科技) and that’s where she met her husband, Dennis. Unfortunately, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer. Peterson spent 31 years caring for the man she loved, and in 2007, when Dennis was about to leave, he was at peace but worried for her. “But what are you going to do ” “I’ll be fine,” she told him.
At 61, she attended a course for emergencies. She went on an ambulance ride-along from time to time. It turned out to be a life-and-death situation, which reminded her of the childhood experience back in the fire. But every time she saw people who were in need were successfully rescued, Peterson felt that long-ago childhood calling. She earned her emergency medical technician license and responded to fire calls with the ambulance. She found that her years of tending to Dennis had prepared her for dealing with the variety of hurts and ills. The inside calling echoed increasingly stronger.

78. After a year, she signed up for a training unit for firefighters. No sooner had she stepped into the training venue than she found all her classmates were 18-22 young kids. “Could I really make it ” Peterson thought to herself, struggling. At the very moment, she was once again thought of the firm and courageous eyes of the firefighters who came to rescue her over 50 years ago. She instantly rolled up her sleeves and began to learn both theoretical and practical knowledge as her much younger peers.
Finally came the written and physical fitness test day. For Peterson, she was at an advantageous situation for the theoretical part, as her past rescue experiences on ambulance ride-along made her a qualified rescuer already. However, the 3-km running, push-ups, sit-ups, etc. all behaved as huge gaps awaiting her to conquer. Though she ranked the last among such items, her persistence, endurance as well as the passion for a childhood dream made her name appear on the list of newly-announced firefighters. This time, tears blurred her eyes, as the dream born in the fire was eventually fulfilled.
