It is pointed out that activities are the basic form of English learning and that the aims of activities are to help students participate, think and practice, and then promote their linguistic competence, learning capacity, cultural consciousness and thinking quality. So teachers should consider the reasonability and effectiveness of the teaching plan so as to design situational, structural and hierarchical English learning activities.2.Teaching material analysis① In this unit:As the third period of the whole-unit teaching design, it focuses on reading and thinking skills. Having talked about the media before, students will read an expository text.② In this period:What: with the theme "Human and society", this section introduces the fundamental purpose of advertising industry is explained at the very beginning and then comes a process of change the advertisements have gone through over the years along with the social economic and technological developments,including classic ads, modern ads, improved modern ads, further improved modern ads and public ads.Why: Through the introduction, students know the advertising is also a kind of media. By understanding the development of advertisements, students will be aware of the functions of advertising. Besides, they will set up a proper attitude towards advertising in their daily life. Hopefully, by the end of this period, students will be able to introduce one of their favorite advertisements to others based on what they have learned.How: This text is organized clearly in two parts with the first paragraph as Part 1 introducing the purpose and main idea of the passage, and the rest paragraphs as Part 2 explaining one type of advertisement in each paragraph. The language is vivid and persuasive, using the techniques of making comparison and contrast, giving examples, analyzing cause and effect, etc. All these present readers a general picture of the development of advertising and the functions of it. Based on the structure, the title and the language features, students can identify the text type, which will help them to analyze the text better.Learner’s analysisSenior two students are active and prefer to take part in cooperative learning activities. They can easily locate specific information through reading but their ability to integrate information is relatively weak. Some students can express themselves in English freely while most of them have to discuss with their peers to get prepared. Students are familiar with the topic, but do not know much about the development of advertisements.II.
