Write a Speech
I. Teaching Objectives
By the end of this class, students will be able to:
1. Understand and utilize basic writing techniques for persuasive speeches.
2. Write a well-organized and coherent speech on a given topic.
3. Use appropriate language and tone to convey their ideas effectively.
4. Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of their own speeches.
II. Teaching Key Points and Difficulties
Key Points:
1. The importance of understanding the audience in any speech.
2. Techniques for organizing and structuring a speech.
3. The use of rhetorical devices in persuasive speeches.
4. The role of language and tone in effective communication.
Difficulties:
1. Balancing the need to inform, persuade, and entertain in a speech.
2. Using language effectively without being overly formal or informal.
3. Ensuring that the speech is engaging and memorable for the audience.
III. Teaching Process and Learning Activities
Introduction (5 minutes)
Teacher Activity: Begin with a brief discussion about public speaking and its importance in our daily lives. Ask students to share examples of memorable speeches they have heard.
Student Activities: Participate in the discussion and share examples from memory.
Body (30 minutes)
Teacher Activity: Introduce the key points of persuasive speech writing, including understanding the audience, organizing the speech, using rhetorical devices, and using appropriate language and tone. Discuss each point with examples from real-life speeches or literature.
Student Activities: Take notes on the key points and examples. Practice brainstorming ideas for a personal speech on a topic of their choice, keeping in mind the key points discussed in class.
Practice (10 minutes)
Teacher Activity: Distribute outlines for two sample speeches: one informative and one persuasive. Have students work in pairs to write their own speeches, using the outlines as guides.
Student Activities: Complete the outlines for their speeches, taking care to consider the audience, organization, rhetorical devices, language, and tone.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
Teacher Activity: Review the key points of persuasive speech writing and encourage students to reflect on how they incorporated those into their own speeches. Discuss the importance of practice and feedback in improving their writing skills.
Student Activities: Reflect on their own writing process and discuss any challenges or successes they encountered. Ask for feedback from their peers and teacher on their speeches.
IV. Homework
Each student will submit one original persuasive speech on a topic of their choice by the following class meeting. The speech should be no less than five minutes long and no more than ten minutes long. The teacher will provide feedback on each speech based on the key points discussed in class and the learning activities completed during class time.
