A different Li Bai
Is this Li Bai new to you
We all learn the poems of Li Bai, one of China’s greatest poets. His poems show a romantic (浪漫的) and free spirit (精神). But is that all there was to him Cartoon movie Chang An (《长安三万里》) shows us a different Li Bai.
In the movie, Li drinks a lot. He likes to have parties. Sometimes he doesn’t keep promises (信守承诺) to his friend Gao Shi. He also goes after money.
The movie’s co-director Xie Junwei said, “Li Bai was not all good... but that is more real.”
According to the movie, Li wanted to become an officer (官员), but his family ran a business. Businessen couldn’t become officers at that time. So he tried to get to know the important people in Chang’an. But he did something wrong and had to leave Chang’an.
Li’s life was hard. He never realized his dreams (实现理想), but his poems stay with us.
Did you know ● Chang’an was the capital of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It was one of the world’s biggest and richest cities at the time. ●The movie’s Chinese name means “30,000 miles from Chang’an”. It is from a poem by Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) poet Chen Zilong. ●The film uses 48 well-known Tang poems to tell its story.
