Passage 1
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Billy was 15 years old then. He grew up in a very poor neighborhood. No one in his family had gone to college before. Actually, few people around him had received higher education. They all struggled to live a good life. Therefore, Billy knew nothing about colleges or scholarships and he never thought he would go to college one day. Although he was a smart boy, he didn’t study hard at school and often got into trouble with other teenagers in his neighborhood.
One day, while Billy was walking on the playground, a boy of his age started making fun of him. Then that boy pushed him hard and Billy fell onto the ground. Billy became so angry that he stood up and beat that boy. So a fight began.
It happened that Billy’s English teacher Mr. Smith was walking nearby. He immediately ran to the boys to stop the fight. Billy was a bit worried because he knew his teacher was very strict with students. He was afraid his teacher would punish him. However, to his astonishment, his teacher didn’t do that.
“Billy, let’s have a talk,” said his teacher.
Billy, not knowing what his teacher wanted to do, was very worried. But he nodded. So they went to a bench nearby and sat down. After they sat down, Mr. Smith began, “Billy, I know you’re a smart boy, but you’re wasting your life now. Why don’t you study hard to go to college so that you can change your life and have a bright future ”
Hearing that, Billy didn’t know what to say. He had never thought about it. Billy was in silence. Mr. Smith continued, “I know you may have never thought about going to college. But everything is possible. When I was at your age, I was a troublemaker just like you and never thought I’d be able to go to college, either. It was all because of the support and encouragement of Mr. Howard, my math teacher in high school.”

Passage 2
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At eleven years old, my main concern was money. On my bedroom floor, I arranged the change from my money box to see what I had. I wished it’d multiply before my eyes, but of course it didn’t. To have more money, I decided to work for my grandmother.
After school, my grandmother drove to pick me up. About an hour later, we arrived at the pick-up kitchen and got dozens of little shiny silver trays (托盘). After our load was arranged in the backseat, my grandmother drove us to our first stop: a small white house. I took a meal and a small box of milk from the back and walked beside my grandmother to the door. She opened it and said, “Mrs. Hershel, we’ve brought you some lunch.” The reply came, “Come on in.”
I nearly jumped when I glanced over to see a tiny old woman in the corner looking at me. She sat in a rocking chair and had many wrinkles. When I approached her, she smiled at me, with no teeth. My grandmother guided me inside to place the lunch on her kitchen table. The house smelled bad.
The next stop was much the same and the next. The houses varied in size and shape, but the same wrinkly people waited for their meals. Each person smiled at me and thanked me as I hurried to get out of there. I was sweaty and tired, and my clothes had captured the bad smell of the food and old houses.
At the end of the day, I guessed it was obvious to my grandmother that I wasn’t very comfortable about the job anymore. “You don’t have to help me,” she said. “I understand if the job isn’t what you want to do.” I swallowed hard, wandering what to say. “For many of the people we deliver lunch to, this is their only meal of the day. Many of them are alone,” my grandmother continued. Seeing my eyes widen, my grandmother smiled, “But a kind word and a smile go a long way.”

Passage 3
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I watched my dad scowl (绷着脸) as he listened to the voice coming through the telephone receiver. I heard him say, “Yes, Miss Beisner,” and “I understand what you’re saying, Miss Beisner. I appreciate you sharing this information. We’ll see what we can do about the situation. Thank you for calling. Goodbye.”
Miss Beisner was my first-grade teacher, and I loved her. I thought she felt the same about me, but now I was beginning to wonder. The tone of Dad’s voice, the redness in his cheeks, and his repeated clenching. And unclenching of fists made it pretty clear. This was not a warm and fuzzy good news-from-the-teacher call.
As I was deciding whether I should lock myself in my bedroom for the rest of my life or run away from home, Dad hung up the phone. “Jacquie, come here and sit down. We need to talk.”
Uh-oh. When Dad said, “We need to talk,” it meant he needed to talk, and I needed to listen.
I shuffled (拖着脚走) over to the well-worn brown chair in the corner of the living room, plopped down, and waited to hear the nature of my crime.
Dad told me that Miss Beisner thought I was bright but not working up to my ability. She said I had strong verbal skills but weak study habits. Translation: I never closed my mouth, and I seldom opened a book. Apparently, my failure to memorize the addition facts, or even attempt to, was more than she was willing to put up with. Hence, the telephone call.
Dad ended our one-way conversation with a verbal outline for his plan of attack. Bubbles, our Toy Manchester Terrier, was going to teach me math. Silently, I thought, No way is any dumb dog going to teach me how to add, not even our beloved Bubbles. Out loud, I said, “How ”
Dad summoned Bubbles from her bed near the stove and commanded her to sit. “Bubbles,” Dad said, “how much is five plus three ” Bubbles let out eight loud, crisp barks.
I was incredulous (满腹狐疑的). I couldn’t understand how a dog could add, and I was more than a little embarrassed by the fact that the family dog was smarter than me.

Passage 4
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Greatest Audience
I was 16 years old, and like many other teenage boys, I was in a band. One day, we were told to perform for a charity event at a large rehabilitation (康复) hospital. It wouldn’t pay much, but it was our first real job. For two weeks we practised hard, getting together every day after school to sharpen our skills and learn enough songs to fill a one-hour show.
Finally came the big day. We showed up early to check out the stage, then the hospital’s entertainment director came over to us. “OK, boys, I just want to share some details with you,” she said. “A lot of the people in the audience are suffering from severe physical or mental disabilities. Many of them are old, in their sixties and seventies. These patients have very few chances to see live entertainment, so they enjoy any kind of musical talent that we can bring in. Just play your regular show.” With that, she left, going into the auditorium (礼堂) to assist the patients to their seats.
Soon it was show time. As we picked up our instruments, we got our first real look at the audience. The auditorium was full. The majority of the people watching us had either been seriously injured in accidents or born with major birth defects (缺陷). Some were talking quietly, but most were just sitting there. The quiet was disturbing, as we were used to energetic audiences.
Tommy, the lead singer, signaled us to start the first song. Everything was perfect, and we played probably the best show of our lives. We hardly missed a note on any of our songs, even the ones that we’d only recently learned. My guitar solos seemed to flow effortlessly out of my fingers, and I felt surrounded by a wall of music. However, we couldn’t enjoy our performance.

Passage 5

“Hurry up you guys, or you’ll be late for school!” called Mom. We dashed downstairs and had a quick breakfast. I was eating my favorite — very sweet cereal, and Sara was having eggs. When I rose to have my bowl washed, Mom whispered, “You know you need to be cautious today when you’re walking Sara to school. It’s your job to assure me she gets there all right.” Then she cast me a very serious look. I thought to myself, wondering why Mom was making such a big deal out of this. I was Sara’s first day of kindergarten, but I could manage it. It wish Mom wouldn’t treat me like such a baby.
“Goodbye, Mom!” Sara yelled. She ran out the door, and I went behind her.
“Be careful!” my mom yelled.
“I will!” I said back and ran outside. Sara was skipping down the front walkway to the sidewalk.
I grabbed Sara’s hand. “Are you eager and excited for your first day of school ” I asked, trying to sound like a grown-up. Sara smiled and nodded her head yes. Meanwhile, my mom was staring at us through the window. “When will she stop treating me like a little kid ” I thought. “I’ll show you the way.” I said, I felt proud to be the elder sister. We walked past beautiful gardens and big, leafy trees. Suddenly, I heard a growl and saw a dog walking towards us. He was big and fierce looking with long sharp teeth. “GRRR!!!” the dog growled. I didn’t see its owner or anyone who could help us. My hand became sweaty and Sara stopped walking. “I’m scared, Julie,” she said. I didn’t want her to be scared. I wanted to seem brave. “Everything will be okay,” I said.
“GRRR!!!” The dog stepped closer and we could see it was the size of a small horse — with red eyes and sharp teeth.

Passage 6
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift—tennis rackets(网球拍)and balls, which was exciting, for we had never played tennis. However, there was no tennis court in the small town where we lived. One Saturday morning my brother excitedly suggested playing tennis against the school building. I agreed immediately, not realizing what a lesson we would learn.
When we reached the school ground, no one was around. We began hitting our balls against the school building. We took turns hitting the ball back and forth, soon becoming pretty good at it and hitting higher and faster. Suddenly, something unthinkable happened—the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows. We looked around and no one was in sight except an old man sitting on a porch halfway down the block.
Quietly, I asked my brother what to do. He looked around again. After confirming no one saw us, except that old man but he probably didn’t know who we were anyway, he suggested leaving secretly. “But should we tell Dad and Mum ” I asked again. A flash of worry came across his face. He was confused too. Carefully considering whether we should tell what had happened, we finally decided to pick up the rest of our balls and headed for home quietly.
Our mother was always in tune with her children. “What happened ” She asked as soon as she saw us. Looking into her eagle eyes, we had to admit what we had done. Hearing that, my mother screamed, “Oh, my goodness!” but soon calmly asked us to tell it to Dad. The moment Dad walked in the house, we both hurried to him and poured out our story. His response was typical. “Well, next Monday, I will call the school doorkeeper and see what we need to do. You will probably have to pay for the window.” We had two terribly worrying days to wait until our Dad got home from work on Monday.

Passage 7
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sara, my neighbor, and I were sitting in our yard, chatting, and frowning at the wooden house across the street.
Nobody in the neighborhood had met these two young men there yet. The two men had long hair and beards and dressed strangely. They kept to themselves. When they came outside, they never made eye contact with anyone. “They sure don’t fit into the neighborhood,” Sara said, the corners of her mouth turning down as she stared at that house.
Sara said, “What about our street parties We’ve always included everyone. Should we invite them ” I sighed, “Try being nice, Sara.” Suddenly, Sara sat up straight and her eyes grew wide with curiosity when a government car pulled up before Mrs Swain’s house next door. We hurried over. Mrs Swain was recovering from cancer and lived alone. Sara and I tried to keep an eye on her.
The man from the car put a piece of paper on Mrs Swain’s door and hurriedly left. Mrs Swain looked old, thin, and very tired when she opened the door. We three looked at the paper. It read: “Someone complained your grass’ length is against city rules. Please cut it in five days, or you’ll be fined.”
It was a shame that nobody had cut her grass for her. However, Sara and I lived alone, and we were both pregnant. What was worse, we were on a tight budget, and the other families here were on vacation.
Sara and I comforted Mrs Swain, telling her we’d figure out a way. Mrs Swain blinked in confusion, “Who would complain Everyone knows that my old lawn mower is broken. And I’ve been sick too.” “It may be those two guys across the street,” Sara whispered, angrily staring at that wooden house.
Just then, a voice that seemed too gentle to be coming from the strange young man behind me said, “What is going on Is she alright ” He nodded toward Mrs Swain. Sara looked at him coldly and said, “Some guys reported her because her grass is too high.” Her eyes ran over him disapprovingly, but he didn’t seem to notice.

I looked around the crowded waiting room at the hospital and sighed. Would the doctor be able to see my eight-year-old son next I couldn’t stop shaking as the wound in his forehead was deep.
We were at the hospital because another child had thrown a rock at Luke during the break as he was running around the corner.
Luke received four stitches (缝针). I fought back the urge to cry. For the next two days, his eye was swollen shut and black and blue. I felt like I’d had a mini nervous breakdown. Every time I tried to sleep or tend to do some housework, horrible thoughts crept into my mind. What if he’d lost his eye What if he’d had brain damage His doctor assured me he was going to be fine, but the what-ifs kept coming. Fear had taken over, and then the fear turned to anger. I was angry with the child who’d thrown the rock. I just couldn’t shake it. What was she thinking She should have known better.
Several days later, Luke’s teacher called me that evening to see how he was feeling, telling me Katie felt terrible and heartbroken over what had happened. I asked the teacher to make Katie understand she couldn’t do that and remind her of the dangers of throwing rocks. The teacher agreed, which made me feel better.
I noticed that as Luke started to heal physically, I wasn’t as angry. I thought about Katie and Luke. I wanted to stand up for my son, protect him, but I didn’t want to mistreat Katie because I learned from the teacher Katie really was a nice kid and that she was just trying to remove the rock so no other children would trip on it.
Last night, Luke’s teacher stopped by and dropped off a get-well card that Katie had made. Luck and I read it several times, and I couldn’t help but feel a little choked up. It was a sincere apology.

Passage 9

I used to be the only child in the family. Everything changed when Tex was born, and I was ten at that time. It seemed to me that Tex got too much attention from Mom and Dad, and I constantly felt a sense of depression. However, my little six-year-old brother had no idea about that, sticking with me all day long, which sometimes really annoyed me.
Last week, I was creating a birthday book for Dad. I worked forever making each picture as perfect as possible. Every time I messed up, I started all over again, so the floor under the kitchen table was covered with half-finished drawings.
“It’s family chore time,” Mom announced. “And you’re on laundry-folding duty,” she told me.
“OK,” I said. “After that, I’ll just put the finishing touches on Dad’s present.”
“I can help, too!” said my little brother, Tex.
I felt a little uncomfortable. But Mom touched his head gently and said, “Of course, baby, you can.” Then she turned to me, “And, Anna, please always remember to move those papers from the floor to the recycling bin in the yard when you’re done with your project.”
I folded the laundry as fast as possible. Just as I was about to get back to the birthday book, my friend showed up. After checking with Mom, we headed to the park. But as soon as we arrived there, the sky filled with giant gray clouds and rain started pouring down. I was upset as I headed back home, dripping wet. That’s when my heart pretty much stopped. Right there, in front of the recycling bin, was a box full of wet-through papers. And not just any papers ... I ran to rescue my birthday book drawings. But it was too late. As I picked up my once-perfect pictures, they were totally ruined!
I cried, “Tex, how did they get out here in the rain ”
Nervously, he came out and said, “Sorry, but I meant to help. I heard what Mom said, and I did it for you. But I had no idea why your birthday book was in those papers.”

Passage 10
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I have always been an introvert (内向的) person, not talking a lot and not hanging around too much. Luckily, I have a good friend, Vishu. She is active, fearless and outspoken. I am too shy to come out of my shell and she is everything I am not. Better still, she is so loving and caring towards me. Not a day goes by when I don’t thank God for blessing me with such a good friend.
However, several days ago, a fight broke out between me and Vishu. There was nothing to fight about yet we did fight and things have changed since then.
What happened was, a few days back when I arrived at school, I saw Vishu talking happily with some other classmates. I walked towards them and I was on the point of saying “Hi” when I heard my name mentioned. I stopped, wondering what they were talking about. Then, “She is sometimes mean and too quiet.” came into my ear. I was stunned. I couldn’t believe my best friend said so. As it seemed, I was wrong about my friend, at least I thought of her to be my true friend but that day I felt that I barely knew her anymore.
When she saw me standing there looking at her angrily, she knew I had heard everything. She tried to explain by saying “You are my best friend. When I said you were mean, what I meant was…”. I had a lot to say to her but I could not just because of my sense of pride. I said “You are not good enough to be my friend.” I walked away without giving her any chance to say a word. I thought that walking alone was much better than walking with people for whom you mean nothing.

“Alright, let’s get your things and go home,” Ava said. Pat was the new kid in town. Her dad got a new job, so they had to move from their old home, school, friends and everything in South America to this new city. Now they were total strangers here.
Summer vacation went by while they unpacked, arranged furniture and adjusted to the new city. School was approaching. Pat dreaded it. She was not an outgoing person, so making friends was not easy for this shy and quiet girl. She was filled with fears and worries. She thought, “Would I make friends Would I fit in Would I survive at all in this strange new world ” But there she was, preparing for a new school full of strangers.
Here came her first day in the new school. She arrived at school on time, found her classroom and seated herself. Everything was going well until the first class when Pat’s teacher asked her to introduce herself in front of the whole class. She had prepared for it the day before, so she should have done it well. But when she uttered the first sentence, the whole class burst out laughing and began to whisper. It was then that Pat realized she talked with a very strange accent which was different from the locals. Blushing with embarrassment, she finished her introduction quickly and sat there all day long without talking with others.
After school, Pat came home crying, “It’s an awful day. All of them are disagreeable. I hate them.” After knowing what had happened in the school, Pat’s mother gently hugged her and comforted her, “Hatred is a double-edged sword that can hurt both others and yourself. Honey, try to be happy.” In order to cheer her up, Pat’s mother suggested, “How about having a party this Saturday We haven’t had any party since we arrived here.” Party is such an appealing event for kids like Pat. Right away, she stopped crying and looked at her mother excitedly, “Oh yes! Ice cream! Cake! Red, red balloons!”
“And friends ” mom asked gently.
Hearing this, Pat sobbed again, “I haven’t got any friends here. Nothing but enemies.”

Passage 13
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had all the usual child fears. I couldn’t go to sleep unless the light in my bedroom was on. I dreaded that someday when my mother was distracted, Crazy Betty (our local small-town oddball) would grab me in the grocery store. On the hottest summer nights, my feet had to be wrapped tightly in my bed sheets; if one of them hung bare over the side of the bed, who knew what might grab it in its cold, slimy claw.
But all other frights paled in comparison with the Great Fear, the Titanic of my childhood terrors. That fear — and I admit, I feel a tightening in stomach typing the words even today — was that something would happen to Monk-Monk, my beloved toy monkey. That was the deepest fear of my childhood and I learned from it the lesson of cherishing what’s important in my life.
Looking at Monk-Monk today, you wouldn’t see what I see. You’d see a torn, discolored sock monkey, very much past his prime, stuffing leaking from his stumpy tail, holes on his sock-body inexpertly stitched up with thread that doesn’t match. I see my dearest childhood friend, my companion of a thousand nights. When I was only two and very ill, an aunt made him for me and delivered him to the hospital. I bonded with him fiercely and rarely let him out of my sight. When no one else was around, Monk-Monk played endless games with me, soaked up my tears, and listened to my secrets.
And then Uncle Ken came to visit. He lived in Ohio and occasionally he would come and stay with us for a couple of days. I didn’t know Uncle Ken well, and I didn’t like him very much. I had the feeling that he didn’t really like me, either. He clearly thought it was pretty silly that a big first-grader was dragging a sock monkey around, and he teased me by saying he thought he’d take Monk-Monk home to Ohio with him. His words almost scared me to death. I clutched Monk-Monk more tightly.

Passage 14
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The economic downturn caught us. We sold our ranch and moved to town, Mother had decided to open a day nursery. She had had no training, but that didn’t stand in her way. She sent away for correspondence courses in child care, did the lessons and in six months formally qualified herself for the task. It wasn’t long before she had a full enrollment and a waiting list. I accepted all this as a perfectly normal instance of Mother’s ability. But neither the nursery nor the motel my parents bought later had provided enough income to send my sister and me to college. In two years I would be ready for college. Time was running out, and Mother was anxious for ways to save money. It was clear that Dad could do no more than he was doing already — farming 80 acres in addition to holding a full-time job. A few months after we’d sold the motel, Mother arrived home with a used green typewriter.
“That’s all we can afford,” Mother said. “It’s good enough to learn on.” And from that day on, as soon as the table was cleared and the dishes were done, Mother would disappear into her sewing room to practice. The slow tap, tap, tap went on some nights until midnight. Soon I heard Mother got a job at the radio station. I was not the least bit surprised, or impressed. But she was wild with joy.
Monday, after her first day at work, I could see that the excitement was gone.
Tuesday, Dad made dinner and cleaned the kitchen. Mother stayed in her sewing room, practicing. “Is Mother all right ” I asked Dad. “She’s having a little trouble with her typing,” he said. “She needs to practice. I think she’d appreciate it if we all helped out a bit more. You might just remember that she is working primarily so you can go to college.”

Passage 15
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Priscilla and I had been classmates for several years but we never really liked each other. We had different groups of friends. Priscilla’s friends were very good at sports while my friends and I performed well in our studies. Priscilla was our school’s top athlete and was constantly praised by our teachers. I was jealous of her athletic abilities and her popularity at school. Maliciously (怀有恶意地), I thought she was just manipulating the teachers and her friends with her charm. I felt she was an insincere and shallow person. Therefore, I wanted to have nothing to do with her.
One afternoon, our class attended an adventure camp. One of the activities we participated in was rock climbing. I was very keen to learn rock climbing. We practiced first on a rock climbing wall, and once we had mastered the skills, we could go on to climb the cliff in the forest reserve. Rock climbers must work with a partner. While one person climbs, the partner must hold on tightly to the other end of the rope for safety. If the climber falls, the partner is responsible for stopping the fall.
The trainer assigned Priscilla to be my partner! I was very upset. How could I trust Priscilla She would not stop me from falling. She would probably wish that I would fall. However, there was nothing I could do because the trainer wouldn’t allow us to change partners. So I climbed and Priscilla held on to the safety rope.
While climbing, a wave of joy and confidence came over me. I cautiously made my way up the wall, caught each notch (凹槽) above tightly, and pulled myself up. Every muscle in my body was shaking from the strain of climbing but I wanted to prove to everyone that I was a better rock climber than Priscilla. Thinking about outperforming Priscilla, my focus on climbing left me as I reached for a notch that was too far from my reach. I took a risk and jumped up to grab it.

Passage 16
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was young, there was an apple orchard (果园) near my home. The man owning the orchard employed some migrant families to gather apples and care for the trees. They worked hard but got paid and fed little.
Once my grandmother struck up a conversation with one of the young women. Her name was Maria. She and her husband, Tony, were expecting a baby. “We’re going to stay with my parents,” Maria said. “We work here to earn money for the bus ticket.”
“They’re going to need a lot of things when the baby comes,” Grandmother told me when we got home. “Let’s ask God to send angels to help that young couple.”
“Angels ” I was surprised.
“If we do our part, angels will do the rest.” she said. Grandmother went to the closet and brought out a box filled with S & H trading stamps, which can be used to buy things. She spilled the pile of stamps on to the kitchen table. “You can see I’ve been saving up the stamps for just the right purchase.”
We sat down at the table and looked through the baby section of the S & H content. My eyes fell on a bassinet (摇篮) with a silk canopy (罩篷) over it. “That’s what a young mother will need,” Grandmother said. “Let’s see if we save 20 books of stamps, we can get a bassinet.”
In the coming weeks, we tried hard to collect the stamps, but before Maria and Tony left, we were three books short. And there were no angels helping us with the stamps either.
“Open the content,” Grandmother said. “Let’s pick a bassinet we can afford.” We chose one without a canopy. The next day we went to the Green Stamp store to get it. “Maria will love this one just as much.”
Grandmother assured me as she pushed the door open. I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Grandmother gave the clerk the information and handed over the 17 books of stamps we saved. The clerk walked to the backroom and returned empty-handed. “I’m sorry,” she said. “We don’t have such a bassinet for the 17 books of stamps.”

Passage 17
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I saw children playing in the playground happily, but I was never allowed there. It wasn’t just me, but all my other friends. When I was little, I didn’t care about it much, but when I grew up things seemed to change. Me, my family, and friends were all Africans and mainly we all had dark skin, which was the reason for all this.
My mama would always say, “Things will change, Berhane, you will one day see the world.” What she said turned out to be right years later. But at that time, I doubted about her words because of the rules of my school without knowing I would make friends with a white girl.
The school I studied had two parts which were separated by a wall. I never knew what was like on the other side of the school and neither did my friends. But there was one thing that we know for sure, if you try to find out what was going on the other side, you will be punished.
One day I was playing with a ball during break with Walter and Grady. I kicked the ball so hard that it went to the other side. We decided to bring the ball back because we had no money to buy another.
Making sure that everything was okay, we went to the other side. We walked along the wall. By the time we got close to the ball, we were all dirty and hurt. But all our efforts were a waste because a group of white children already got the ball.
They were wondering where it had come from. We were pushing and fighting each other, saying, “You get the ball!” “No, you get it!” I was told to get the ball because I was the one who had kicked the ball to the other side. I stood there quietly watching the kids. There was a girl and two boys, their backs toward us. Their hairs were all combed and mine were all curled up. I was a girl with dark skin, while they had light skin. We were completely different.

Passage 18

My first marathon. It’s pouring rain, my legs were cold, and I was wishing I hadn’t been too nervous to eat a bigger breakfast. “There were tables of chocolate bars every mile at my last marathon,” Dad says.
Suddenly everyone around us starts moving. Way up ahead I see smoke from the cannon. I can’t believe we hadn’t heard it. It took ages to reach the starting line. Our marathon started.
Soon Dad started to slow down. After only a mile, I overtook everyone in sight. And Dad was way behind with his left leg cramped(抽筋).
I soon reached mile 5, and I was feeling good. I still hadn’t seen a chocolate bar anywhere. Maybe they didn’t have them! Instead, the streets were lined with fast-food places. But there were lines of runners at every shop.
By mile 10, my legs felt good but I was starving. How I wish I hadn’t just had one piece of toast for breakfast! It’s raining so hard that it hurt. My hands stung from the cold. I took a power gel out of pocket and tried to open it, but my hands were so cold they felt as if they were frozen into fists. On the balconies people yelled and waved to me. That cheered me up a bit.
Then I ran past mile 13, the halfway checkpoint. Up ahead I could see my mum and my little brother cheering for me. Hearing my name from their cheers, I felt refreshed and kept on running.
Mile 15. I saw food at last! There were tables full of bananas. I grabbed a banana and scoffed it down. Then I ripped the power gel open. My hands had come unfroze. I squeezed the packet and filled my mouth with the gel. Chocolate would taste better.
When I reached mile 20, and I didn’t want to run another inch. Every step jarred my leg.
I started walking the next mile before Dad caught up running in an awkward way.

Standing outside the cave entrance, Grandfather admired the green-carpeted hills, but Lin hated the cave. He had come here today only because of Grandfather.
Grandfather preferred to use guano, the waste matter of bats, to fertilize (施肥) his crops. But he was too weak to do the whole job. He could gather the guano and bring it out of the cave in the basket, but he needed Lin to carry it home in the wooden cart.
Grandfather took a shovel (铲子) and flashlight from the cart. “Change your mind and come inside with me ” he asked Lin. “It won’t happen again, Lin,” Grandfather promised. “Last time it was my mistake. We shouldn’t have waited until nearly dusk (黄昏) to go inside. I know that the bats fly out of the cave at dusk.” That was exactly what had happened on the Terrible Day of the Bats. As Lin had stood at the cave entrance, a crowd of black bats had erupted from it. Lin had been terrified.
“Bats hurt no one,” Grandfather had said. “Besides, you scared them as much as they did you.”
But nothing could make Lin forget the horror he had felt in that black cloud of bats. “I can’t go in there,” he told Grandfather now.
“OK,” Grandfather said. As he started into the cave, he called over his shoulder, “I’ll be out in no time.” Lin parked the cart and glanced at the shovel and flashlight inside it. His shovel and flashlight. He had used them before. Now they only reminded him of his fear.
Lin turned his back on the cart and walked down to the river. Grandfather would call when he was finished. Until then, Lin would put as much distance as possible between himself and the cave.
Lin watched two little birds splashing about at the edge of the river. He enjoyed the peaceful view over the vast river surface. Then Lin realized that Grandfather’s “no time” had turned into a long time.
Lin hurried up the hill toward the cave. The cart was still there. Grandfather was still inside. Something had gone wrong.

Passage 20

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

The next morning, I saw each person with all their wrinkles and the houses a little differently.

【答案】When we arrived home, my grandmother handed me the money I’d earned. I counted it and was surprised to see that it wasn’t as much as I had hoped for. But as I looked at the bills and coins in my hand, I realized that it wasn’t just about the money. It was about the people we had helped and the difference we had made in their lives.
The next morning, I saw each person with all their wrinkles and the houses a little differently. I no longer saw the bad smell or the tiredness in my own body. Instead, I saw the smiles on their faces and the gratitude in their eyes. I realized that my grandmother was right - a kind word and a smile really do go a long way. From that day on, I looked forward to helping my grandmother deliver meals to the elderly. I learned their names and their stories, and I listened to them as they shared their memories and their struggles. I saw the importance of human connection and the impact it can have on someone’s life. Years later, when my grandmother passed away, I continued her legacy by volunteering at a local soup kitchen. I remembered the lessons she had taught me and the kindness she had shown to others. And I knew that, even in her absence, her spirit lived on through the work that I did.

【答案】参考范文
After that, I threw myself into math with newfound determination. Instead of hanging out with my friends after school, I would perch at the kitchen table, textbooks splayed out before me, and practice addition and subtraction. I thought to myself, if Bubbles, a dog, could learn math, then surely, I could too. With each passing week, I could see the fruits of my labor. Occasionally, during our study sessions, Dad would call Bubbles over. She would bark out the correct answers to simple math problems — it was a unique, interactive way for me to assess my progress. I swelled with pride at my achievements, my parents were overjoyed, and Miss Beisner’s smile returned.
One day, I asked Dad whether Bubbles really knew how to add. I couldn’t help but wonder if there was a trick or if it was all simply a coincidence. Dad, with a knowing smile, explained that Bubbles didn’t actually possess the ability to solve math problems. In reality, he had trained her to respond to certain cues. When he posed a math question, he would subtly tap his foot a certain number of times, prompting Bubbles to bark the corresponding number. Despite the initial disappointment, I realized that it was my own effort and perseverance that led to my improvement in math. My grades continued on an upward path. Bubbles couldn’t add, subtract, multiply or divide, but she sure could teach.

【答案】One possible version:
As each song finished, we didn’t receive thundering applause. After 45 minutes we decided to end our set early. The director ran back, confused. “You don’t understand,” she explained. “Most of these people don’t know they’re supposed to clap. In fact, they love you. They’ll be so hurt if you don’t finish.” None of us really believed her, but we should honor our word and finish the show. Finally the show was over, but we got nothing. Backstage the director told us, “When you’re done packing up, please come back to the auditorium.”
What happened next shocked me more than anything. The audience had gathered by the stage. They told us that we were the best band that had played for them in years. We couldn’t believe it. The director had been right: they loved us! We ended up staying there for over an hour, telling them about ourselves and talking about music. Later, I played some big shows with different bands. But no matter how much the audience cheered, I never felt as good as I did that one special night.

I was trying to make my voice sound calm. Planting my feet resolutely on the ground, I said to Sara: “Don’t be afraid!” while holding her hand tight. The dog edged closer with the menacing “GRRR!”. “Run!” I exclaimed, we sprinting to the kindergarten. Just as the dog was overtaking us, we threw ourselves inside. It was really close! We exchanged a happy smile. Seeing Sara stepping into the classroom, I turned for home, wanting desperately to narrate the thrilling episode to Mom.
I told mom what had happened. There followed no response. Then I saw Mom’s tears. “I am so proud of you! You did what you had promised!” Mom said, holding me in a tight embrace, after which Mom looked into my eyes. She gave me some advice on tackling fierce dogs: “Next time you are cornered by such a dog, pretend to pick up a stone. It will be frightened away.” My mom’s words of praise and advice were deeply engraved in my heart. And I promised to be a better guardian of Sara.

【答案】 Dad stepped into the house, looking quite tired and serious. We waited carefully for Dad’s decision. Dad pulled us to his side and said, “I have already called the school doorkeeper. He said you should go to the schoolmaster and admit your mistake.” Then, Dad took us to see the schoolmaster. We deeply apologized for our actions and promised to pay for the window. Smiling, he said he had known it from the doorkeeper. He said, “You didn’t do it intentionally, so there’s no need to worry too much.”
He could see our relief as he continued. He said that the school budget allowed for repairing windows, so we didn’t have to pay. He said with appreciation, “Everyone can do something wrong. As long as you can admit your mistakes and bravely take responsibility, you are honest and good children. I am proud of you.” We are also proud, realizing that honesty and responsibility are good things. We were fortunate to have told our mother and made the right choice.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The young man and his friend quickly made eye contact and nodded seriously. Then they turned and walked back toward the house. Just then, Mrs Swain’s eyes widened in surprise, and we followed her gaze. The two young men were hurrying across the street, one pushing an old lawn mower and the other carrying a weed eater. Without a word, they worked to cut Mrs Swain’s grass. In silence, we knew we’d made a big, embarrassing, and silly mistake. We regretted misunderstanding the two kind men, and just stood there awkwardly.
After they finished the work, Sara and I walked in shame to apologize for judging them. “Forgive us for being rude,” we said. They just humorously replied with a joke to get us out of our guilt. Later, Mrs Swain carried juice and homemade cookies to the tired men. Mrs Swain thanked them and offered to pay them. But one man smiled, “We’ll keep your grass cut if you keep making juice and cookies for us.” That day, we learned a lesson. Never pass judgment on people because they don’t look, dress, or sound like you. They may be much better people than you are.

Passage 8

【答案】One possible version:
I wanted this to be a teachable moment for Luke to learn about forgiveness. I wanted to let go of my own anger, too. I asked Luke if he was ready to forgive her. After all, his opinion counted the most. He thought about it for a moment, smiled and said, “Yes.” He knew she hadn’t done it on purpose. Children are so resilient and so honest. They don’t hold onto resentment as adults do sometimes. Their hearts are pure, so we wrote Katie a letter together, reading, “We know it was an unfortunate accident. We forgive you, and we hope you forgive yourself.”
The next morning, Luke and I waited for Katie with the letter at the school gate. Finally came Katie. When she spotted us, she paused and forced a smile. Luke trotted beside her with wild little hops, handing her the letter. No sooner had she unfolded it than a relieved and happy smile bloomed on her face, which made Luke feel much better. She skipped to give me a big hug. I hugged her back. We didn’t have to say anything else; we all knew it was forgiveness that was the most important step in healing.

But as I looked at Tex’s innocent face, I realized that he didn't mean any harm. I apologized to him for getting angry and explained why those papers were important to me. Tex was really creative and came up with some unique ideas that surprised me. Working with him made the process much more enjoyable. We gathered suitable materials and started to create the gift. Throughout the process, I was happy that Tex and I could work together and complete the special present. In the end, Dad really appreciated the thought and effort we put into his present. I learned that working together as a family can create some of the best memories.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I went back home feeling it was the worst day ever. Lying on the bed with my face buried in the quilt, I couldn’t help thinking about the unforgettable moments we had gone through together. Memories brought me back to the day when I went to the school canteen alone as usual. I was about to put on the earphones to avoid awkwardness when Vishu came to me asking if she could sit with me. In no time, I raised my head and refused. But she seemed to know my situation and just sat down with a shining smile. Introvert as I was, her enthusiasm started to change my dull life.
I decided to make up for it and write her a letter. What I was sure was that I did not want to lose her as my friend. In the letter, I conveyed my apology for being so rude and my sincere appreciation for all her help and care for me. A wave of relief washed over me the moment I saw her smile after reading the letter. Tears welling up in our eyes, we hugged each other tightly and promised to be lifelong friends. When making some mistakes, it is never too late to apologize.

【答案】One possible version:
“If so, let’s have an enemy party. I think it would be interesting,” Pat’s mom smiled. Pat looked at her mother in confusion, wondering how an enemy party could possibly be fun. But her mother continued, “Invite your classmates, including those who laughed at you today. Maybe they just need a chance to get to know you better and realize that you can be friends. It’s an opportunity to break down the walls and build bridges.” Pat pondered over her mother’s words, realizing that maybe there was a different way to approach her situation, one that involved understanding and forgiveness.
On Saturday, it was sunny, and all of Pat’s classmates came to the party. The backyard was adorned with colorful decorations, and the air was filled with laughter and excitement. As the day progressed, Pat observed her classmates interacting with one another, slowly realizing that they were not as disagreeable as she had initially thought. Conversations sparked, smiles were exchanged, and barriers began to crumble. Pat’s mom’s idea of an “enemy party” turned out to be a turning point, where enemies became acquaintances, acquaintances turned into friends, and the seeds of understanding were sown.

I see my dearest
