Jenn Larson was just 14 years old when she took over the bookkeeping for her family’s dairy farm near Firth, Idaho. She soon saw firsthand how challenging it was for her parents, who lacked any college education, to properly manage the unpredictable earnings of farming. This started a lifelong passion for finance, and it led her down an unexpected path to becoming a role model she never had.
Yet, such ambitions ran in obvious contrast to everything familiar to her. “I didn’t have any advisors,” Larson says. “I didn’t have anyone to look up to for a professional example. All the women I associated with were stay-at-home moms.” Despite having parents who couldn’t fully understand her ambitions, Larson went to the BYU Marriott School, where she earned a business degree and focused much of her coursework on international finance.
Larson worked for seven years as a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual, advising clients on important financial decisions. Larson returned to BYU Marriott in 2008 to earn an MBA, and accepted a position in the school as an assistant professor following her graduation. For more than a decade, Larson has taught finance classes to undergraduate and MBA students. While she teaches finance, Larson tries to help her students see how mastering finance principles can also impact their personal lives.
Constantly balancing motherhood and work, Larson makes adjustments to the way she teaches. She gave birth to her first three children in three years while teaching at BYU Marriott, wondering at times if labor might start while in front of a class full of students. During the pandemic, Larson taught online classes from her dining room table while taking care of a newborn and other young children at home.
As a female instructor in the often male-dominated finance industry, Larson works to inspire other women who seek a similar path to hers. Larson became the role model that she never had — the example that a 14-year-old girl staring at a farming expense sheet couldn’t find. Now, Labor on’s children and students will always have that example.
4. What motivated Larson to major in finance
A. Her experience of managing accounts.
B. Her strong desire for college education.
C. The high expectations from her parents.
D. The challenging labor on her dairy farm.
5. What problem did Larson face when she decided to study finance
A. She had no one to ask for advice.
B. She was unsure about the coursework.
C. She was misunderstood by her neighbours.
D. She was unfamiliar with everything at school.
6. What does the underlined word “labor” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. The work of looking after a baby.
B. The process of dealing with students.
C. The process of giving birth to a baby.
D. The work of adjusting teaching methods.

根据首段前两句“Jenn Larson was just 14 years old when she took over the bookkeeping for her family’s dairy farm near Firth, Idaho. She soon saw firsthand how challenging it was for her parents, who lacked any college education, to properly manage the unpredictable earnings of farming. (珍·拉尔森在爱达荷州费斯附近的一家奶牛场接管簿记工作时只有14岁。她很快就亲眼看到,对于没有受过大学教育的父母来说,妥善管理农业不可预测的收入是多么困难。)”可知,拉尔森接管簿记工作的经历让她有了学习金融专业的想法。故选A。
根据第二段第二三四句““I didn’t have any advisors,” Larson says. “I didn’t have anyone to look up to for a professional example. All the women I associated with were stay-at-home moms.” (“我没有任何顾问,”拉尔森说。“我没有任何人可以作为我的榜样。我接触过的所有女性都是全职妈妈。”)”可知,拉尔森决定学习金融专业时,她面临着没有人可以咨询相关情况的问题。故选A。
根据倒数第二段第二句“She gave birth to her first three children in three years while teaching at BYU Marriott, wondering at times if labor might start while in front of a class full of students. (她在BYU Marriott教书期间生下了三年来的头三个孩子,她有时会担心,在一群学生面前, 是否会开始。)可知,拉尔森是在教书期间生下了三个孩子,所以她担心会不会在学生面前生孩子。所以,划线词“labor”应为“生孩子”。故选C。

Video games can spend hours intensely focused on leveling up — progressing to the next level of skill and challenge- in a virtual world, while their everyday troubles fade into the background. Called “flow”, this profoundly immersive state is familiar to artists, musicians and athletes, and has become a popular topic in the media. But video game scholar Braxton Soderman urges caution.
In his new book, Against Flow: Video Games and the Flowing Subject, Soderman aims to “create a little turbulence (湍流) in the smooth flow.” Among his criticisms of flow in relation to video gaming is that it can be used to manipulate (操纵) players for profit and socially isolate them.
“Developers of video games and apps design their technologies specifically in order to produce these intense states of concentration, to addict people to these kinds of experiences,” says Soderman. Money, of course, is the driving force behind most game design, not happiness.
Soderman has played video games almost his entire life, but as the father of two young children, he’s careful to limit the types of games and amount of time his kids spend on video games.
As with flow, Soderman worries that the concepts of play are already being manipulated by capitalism. Business owners, he says, arc being encouraged to use play and creativity to establish “playgrounds of profit” instead of creating more open, inclusive environments that actually make people happier.
“Play is an activity that is really about creativity, exploring possibilities, and freedom,” he says. “But it can be hijacked (操纵) and used in a wrong way”.
The concept of play, like flow, is one that Soderman will challenge us all to step back and think about critically. Because, as he shows in Against Flow, getting lost in a video game for a while can be fun, as long as you don’t end up swept away in a lonely current of someone else’ s profit.
8. What’s a key sign of video games being in a “flow” state
A. Profound interest in arts and music.
B. Increased focus on everyday troubles.
C. Persistent engagement in online chatting.
D. Intense concentration on game progression.
9. What is the ultimate purpose of most game design
A. To foster genuine happiness. B. To enhance social interactions.
C. To build up concentration skills. D. To profit from player involvement.
10. According to Soderman, what is a concern about “play”
A. It’s subject to capitalist influence.
B. It blocks creativity and possibilities.
C. It’s unfavorable for game development.
D. It promotes addiction to virtual socializing.
11. What is the text most likely to be
A. A review of recent video game research.
B. A report about game development practices.
C. An introduction to a newly published book.
D. An essay on the concepts of “flow” and “play”.
D 9. D 10. A 11. C
Against Flow: Video Games and the Flowing Subject这本书作者Soderman对于游戏中的“flow”状态表示警告,认为它可以被用来操纵玩家以获取利润并导致社交孤立。
根据第一段的“Video games can spend hours intensely focused on leveling up — progressing to the next level of skill and challenge- in a virtual world, while their everyday troubles fade into the background.(电子游戏可以让玩家在虚拟世界中花费数小时专注于升级——在技能和挑战上不断升级,而他们的日常烦恼则逐渐消失在背景中。)”
根据第二段“Among his criticisms of flow in relation to video gaming is that it can be used to manipulate (操纵) players for profit and socially isolate them.(他对“flow”状态与电子游戏相关的批评之一是,它可以被用来操纵玩家以获取利益,并在社交上孤立他们。)”和第三段“Money, of course, is the driving force behind most game design, not happiness.(当然,金钱才是大多数游戏设计背后的驱动力,而不是快乐。)”
根据倒数第三段“As with flow, Soderman worries that the concepts of play are already being manipulated by capitalism. Business owners, he says, arc being encouraged to use play and creativity to establish “playgrounds of profit” instead of creating more open, inclusive environments that actually make people happier.(关于flow,Soderman担心游戏的概念已经被资本主义所操纵。他说,企业主被鼓励利用游戏和创造力来建立“利润游乐场”,而不是创造更开放、更包容的环境,让人们更快乐。)”可知,Soderman认为“玩”和创造力的概念已经受到资本主义的操纵,创业者被鼓励利用游戏和创造力来建立“以利润为目的的游乐场”,而不是创建更开放、更包容的环境,让人们真正感到幸福,所以关于“play”,让人担忧的是它受资本主义的影响。故选A。
根据第二段“In his new book, Against Flow: Video Games and the Flowing Subject, Soderman aims to “create a little turbulence (湍流) in the smooth flow.”(在他的新书《反对流:电子游戏和流动的主题》中,Soderman的目标是“在流畅的‘flow’中制造一点湍流”。)”
D
According to Dr. John Swaddle, a professor at the Institute for Integrative Conservation at College of William & Mary, hundreds of millions of birds die every year from window collisions.
However, if you put decals(贴花纸)or colorful stickers outside of your windows, the birds are more likely to see the barrier and therefore avoid it. Remember: never inside your window; always outside of your window.
“Double-glazed(双层的)windows reflect a lot of light, especially when you view them from a slight angle, as a flying bird would do,” Swaddle told Salon. He is the corresponding author of a recent study which tries to figure out how this basic reality of physics impacts on a bird’s experience as it flies near a standard window. For their experiment, researchers had birds perform repeated and controlled flight trials near windows with film(薄膜)products, BirdShades film and Haverkamp film, respectively.
“In our collision avoidance trials, BirdShades increased window avoidance by 47% and the Haverkamp increased avoidance by 39%. But neither product was effective when the films were applied to the internal surface of windows,” the authors concluded.
When breaking down the problem of avoiding window collisions from a bird’s point of view, Swaddle explained, “The light and reflected imagery from the external surface of the glass is sufficient to obscure a film or decal that is stuck to the inner surface from being seen clearly.”
If you want to protect birds from easily avoidable deaths without buying window film products, there are other solutions. Swaddle recommended “pleasing fritted glass(烧结玻璃)that could be used in new construction and which is also bird-friendly”. Besides, he notes that screens can be helpful as well, not only by limiting reflectiveness but by providing birds with a cushion if they make impact. It is also possible to use everyday household objects to signal to birds that there are barriers — netting, bits of string, colorful stickers, and paint. These can all be used to this effect.
12. Which of the following can work to reduce bird window collisions
A. Choosing double-glazed windows.
B. Avoiding opening windows at night.
C. Sticking decals to the outer side of windows.
D. Covering the inner windows with colorful decals.
13. What did the researchers want to find in the experiment
A. The bird-friendly film products and glass.
B. The efficient measures of collision avoidance.
C. The bird behaviors when hitting the bright window.
D. The link between light reflection and bird window collisions.
14. Why were the screens helpful in preventing bird window collisions
A. They can slow down the crash. B. They can be found in everyday life.
C. They can be used in new construction. D. They can remove the influence of reflectiveness.
15. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph
A. Soft screens to lessen impacts. B. Household objects to warn birds.
C. Approaches to avoiding bird collisions. D. Bird-friendly objects to make birds pleased.
C 13. D 14. A 15. C

根据第三段““Double-glazed(双层的)windows reflect a lot of light, especially when you view them from a slight angle, as a flying bird would do,” Swaddle told Salon. He is the corresponding author of a recent study which tries to figure out how this basic reality of physics impacts on a bird’s experience as it flies near a standard window.
根据第六段“Besides, he notes that screens can be helpful as well, not only by limiting reflectiveness but by providing birds with a cushion if they make impact.”(除此之外,他指出,纱窗也有效,它不仅能减少(非完全去除)反射,还能在鸟儿与窗户发生碰撞时提供一个缓震作用)”可知,纱窗有效的原因是因为“它能降低撞击的速度(即缓震)”,故选A项。
根据最后一段“If you want to protect birds from easily avoidable deaths without buying window film products, there are other solutions. Swaddle recommended “pleasing fritted glass that could be used in new construction and which is also bird-friendly”.

Thirty Cents Worth
Whispering voices and laughter filled the hallways of my school as I walked with my friend toward our next class. I resisted the impulse (冲动) to become yet another person using these few moments to judge others in order to make myself feel better. I repeated to myself, “Thirty cents”, as I continued to walk in silence, something I rarely did. My friend dug her elbow into my side and complained, “That’s just annoying. Why would anyone want blue hair It’s unbearable!” I thought before my tongue sprang into action. Ordinarily, I would just give the expected giggle and nod-but for some reason, I hesitated this time.
My thoughts turned back to the previous Sunday afternoon. After flying through the house grabbing and tossing things into my soccer bag, I discovered that I was out of Blister—Block Band-Aids (防起泡创可贴),an essential for the next day’s game. My mom dropped me off and promised me she’d be right back. I rushed inside and grabbed the goods.
There was a line at the register, as usual, and I waited my turn. I slowed down for a minute and examined the man in front of me. I was shocked. He was old and had a smell of gasoline and cigarettes. His hair was messy and reached below his shoulders. He wore a red vest covered with dust and jeans faded beyond recognition. His blue eyes were glassy and tired, and his dark red face was deeply wrinkled by hard times.
He reached the counter and greeted the saleswoman with a nod. She turned away her eyes as he pointed to the cigarettes behind the counter. She grabbed the carton (香烟纸盒) he was pointing to and quickly rang him up (用收银机收下了钱). He grabbed the plastic bag and slowly walked away.
Hardly had he left the counter when I gave her four one-dollar bills and the Band-Aids as she nodded in agreement with my disgust.
“Sorry,” she said. “You’re thirty cents short.”
“Oh, no. I don’t have thirty cents! My mom isn’t here. She’ll be right back. Can I run out to the car real quick ” As I was trying to explain my case, the cashier was visibly annoyed by the delay I was causing.

I could feel the blood rush to my face as the people behind me in line started complaining. They looked at each other with the same judgmental eyes I had just shared with the cashier. As I was about to run out of the store without buying the Band-Aids, I got a strong whiff of cigarettes and gasoline. A dirty hand with yellow fingernails placed four nickels and a dime on the counter. I was awestruck and at a loss for words. By the time I came back to my senses, he had already turned and left. I went after him and quickly offered to pay him back.
“That’s okay. It’s only thirty cents,” the man said with a warm smile and a wink. His smile was like a beam of light coming from a crack, lighting up my gloomy world. The man I had just perceived as a foul creature did something amazingly kind. When I thought about what I had done before, a million shames washed over me. After that, when I started to judge somebody based on their looks, I would stop and repeat “thirty cents” to myself as a reminder. Whenever I said so, I was amazed to find beauty everywhere.

7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Following Your Interest

B Increased focus on everyday troubles.

My students frequently ask me how I planned out my career to become president of Fidelity Investments. I always tell them, “There was no grand plan; I backed into my career one step at a time.” In this tough economy and ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to smartly evaluate each step in your career. To prepare for whatever surprises lie ahead, try to make choices today that will maximize your options in the future. ____16____
Gaining transferable (可转移的) knowledge begins with the choices you make at school. You want your education to provide you with the necessary skills and expertise to succeed in a wide variety of jobs. ____17____ I favor those that involve extensive writing, rigorous analysis, or quantitative skills.
Once you have finished your formal education, search for jobs that will allow you to further expand your transferable knowledge—to help you find your next job. Let’s say you take a job putting together airplane leases. Within a few years, you could become the world’s expert on the subject. ____18____ By contrast, if you take a job that will expand your computer programming skills, you can greatly boost your options for later steps in your career.
Remember gaining transferable knowledge is only one piece of the puzzle. ____19____ As a saying goes, “Organizations don’t hire people. People hire people.” The more people you know, the more people will think of you when a job pops open—even when it is not publicly advertised.
Of course, you can build your network to some degree without changing jobs. ____20____ But this sort of event-driven networking pales in comparison with the deep bonds you can develop with your colleagues by working, communicating, and traveling with them.

B. Gain transferable expertise and form close bonds with your colleagues.
