'Do you call that a hat ' I said to my wife.
'You needn't be so rude about it,' my wife answered as she looked at herself in the mirror.I sat down on one of those modern chairs with holes in it and waited.
We had been in the hat shop for half an hour and my wife was still in front of the mirror.'We mustn't buy things we don't need,' I remarked suddenly. I regretted saying it almost at once.
'You needn't have said that,' my wife answered.
'I needn't remind you of that terrible tie you bought yesterday.‘
'I find it beautiful,' I said. 'A man can never have too many ties.‘
'And a woman can't have too many hats,' she answered.
Ten minutes later we walked out of the shop together.
My wife was wearing a hat that looked like a lighthouse!

needn't情态动词“不必,没有必要”

I regretted saying it almost at once,
1. mustn’t表示“不应该”,是表示一种“禁止”的意思。
regret to do sth 很遗憾的要做某事
I regret to say I can' t help you. 很遗憾我不能帮你。
2. regret doing sth 后悔做过某事
I regretted being unable to come today. 我很后悔今天没来。
I regretted having been careless,我很后悔那样粗心。
也就是说doing表示做过了;to do表示将来的动作还没有发生的。
3.remember to do sth 记得去做某事、
remember doing sth 记得做过某事
forget to do忘记去做某事 forget doing忘记做过某事
stop to do停下来去做某事 stop doing 停止做某事
★'You needn't have said that,' my wife answered.
needn't have done 本来没必要做某事,而实际上已做了
You needn't have told them that.
这你本可不告诉他们的。
★'I find it beautiful,' I said.' A man can never have too many ties.'
find it beautiful
1.it做宾语,beautiful做宾语补足语。
find+宾语+宾语补足语
l find a vase broken. 我发现花瓶碎了。
He is finding the trip very exciting.
She found herself in hospital.
2.can not...too 无论如何…也不过分,越...越好
l cannot thank you too much.
You can never study too hard.
You cannot be too careful. 你越小心越好。
★'A woman can't have too many hats.' she answered.
Ten minutes later we walked out of the shop together. My wife was wearing a hat that looked like a lighthouse!
wear v.穿戴
wear a beard,wear a happy smile,wear a watch
wear earrings,wear a troubled look,wear a hat
表示“穿戴在身上”的状态,进行时态表示暂时的状态put on表示“穿戴”的动作take off脱下。
Part 4: Grammar&Difficult points
情态动词
1.情态动词,有时和动词的完成形式构成谓语,表示“应当已经做过某事"想必已经做过”的含义。
I should have thought of that. 我本该想到那一点的。
They shouldn't have left so soon.他们本没必要这么快就走了。
She must have been through a lot.她一定受了很多苦了。
He cannot have finished the work so soon.他不会这么快就完成工作了。
You may have read about it in the papers.
你一定在报纸上看到这件事情了。
We ought to have given more help.我们本应该给你更多的帮助的。
2.情态动词和动词的进行式构成谓语,表示“应当正在”“想必正在”这类含义。
She shouldn't be working like that. She' s still so weak.
You should be wearing a mask. 你应该正戴着口罩呢。
He can' t be swimming in such weather.这种天气,他不会在游泳呢。
At the moment she may be playing with her schoolmates.
3.情态动词有一定的意义,但没有人称和数的变化,不能独立使用,它和后面的动词构成谓语.
只作情态动词的  
can/could, may/might, ought to, must
可情态可实义的 
need, dare/dared
可情态可助动词的 
shall/should, will/would
相当于情态动词的 
have to, used to
must和need
1、must
1)表示“必须”或“应该”做某事。
We must do everything step by step.循序渐进。
You mustn't talk like that.你千万不要那样说话。
2)在回答有must引起的问题时,如果是否定的答复,不能用mustn‘t,而需用needn’t或don‘t have to,因为mustn't是“一定不要”、“不准”的意思。
needn't 没有必要
don' t have to 没有必要
mustn't 千万不要,不准
Must we send in our plan this week
这周我们必须交计划吗?
-Yes you must. 是的,必须。
- No,you needn't. 不,没有必要。
3) must与have to的最大区别在于:
当表示过去某时不得不做完了某事,只能用had to do sth.
I did not go to see you this morning because I had to go to the hospital.
今天我没能去看你,因为我不得不去医院。
2、 need
1)作情态动词,表示“需要’,主要用于否定句及疑问句,肯定句用 must, have to, should, ought to
- Need you go so soon 你需要这么快走吗?
- Yes,I must. 是的,我必须走。
- No,I needn't. 不,我没必要走。
So I needn't tell him,need I?我没有必要告诉他,是吗?
We needn't hurry. 我们没有必要着急。
在有否定意思的句子(no,hardly等否定词的句子)中也可以用情态动词need.
I don' t think you need worry.我认为你没必要担心。
I hardly need say how much we missed you.
我没必要说我们多想念你。
2) need做及物动词:需要need sth/doing/to do
Does he need to know it
You don‘ t need to do it yourself.
They did not need to go.
The question needs to be discussed. 讨论
The room needs cleaning.
He doesn‘t need to be told.
不必告诉他了。(他已经知道了)
He needn‘t be told.
勿告诉他。(告诉他没好处或没用)
3、mustn't与needn't区别:
1) mustn't不应该,不要
You mustn't smoke in a theater. It is forbidden
你千万不要在戏院里吸烟这是不准许的[f 'b d( )n]
You mustn't make a noise. The children are asleep.
2)needn't没有必要,不必
You needn't drive so quickly; we have plenty of time
你不必开那么快,我们有大量的时间。
You needn't come with us if you don' t want to.
要是你不想去的话,没有必要和我们去。
