"Write a Summary of a News Report"
Teaching Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand and apply the skills needed to write a concise and accurate summary of a news report. They will also be able to analyze the main points and key details of a news story.
Students' Level: High School Students
Duration: 45 minutes
Materials Needed: Whiteboard, markers, news articles, handouts on summary writing, and laptops for research

Teaching procedure:
Warm-up (5 minutes):
1. Begin with a quick review of the previous lesson on how to read and comprehend a news article. Highlight the importance of identifying the main idea, supporting details, and any important quotes or facts.
2. Ask students if they have encountered any news reports recently that they found interesting or informative. Encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions about these reports.
Instruction (30 minutes):
1. Introduce the task of writing a summary of a news report. Explain that the summary should include the most important information from the original article, without including personal opinions or interpretations. Use examples from news articles to illustrate this point.
2. Distribute handouts on summary writing and discuss the key elements that should be included in a good summary: who, what, where, when, why, and how. Emphasize the importance of focusing on the main ideas and avoiding unnecessary details.
3. Break students into small groups and assign each group one news article to summarize. Assign each group a specific role (e.g., writer, editor, proofreader). Give them time to work together and then present their summaries to the class.
4. After each group presents their summary, ask questions to clarify any misunderstandings or areas for improvement. Encourage students to provide feedback to their peers and use this as an opportunity to reinforce the key points discussed earlier.
5. Discuss common mistakes that students may make when writing summaries (e.g., including too many details, leaving out important information). Provide guidance on how to avoid these errors and improve their writing skills.
6. Summarize the main points covered in class and remind students of the key elements of a good news summary.
Production (10 minutes):
Assign students to practice writing news summaries on their own using a provided news article or one they find online. Instruct them to focus on the main ideas and key details while avoiding personal opinions or interpretations. Allow them some time to complete their assignments before collecting them for assessment purposes.
Assessment (10 minutes):
Collect students' news summaries for assessment purposes. Review each summary for accuracy, clarity, and coherence. Assign scores based on the quality of their writing and their ability to effectively convey the main points of the original news report. Encourage students to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses in this exercise and discuss ways they can improve their summary writing skills in future lessons.
Homework:
Ask students to continue practicing their summary writing skills by completing at least two more news summaries on different topics over the next week. Encourage them to use online resources or seek help from teachers or peers if needed. Submit these summaries for assessment purposes at the next class meeting.
