【Text】
'Do you call that a hat ' I said to my wife.
'You needn't be so rude about it,' my wife answered as she looked at herself in the mirror.
I sat down on one of those modern chairs with holes in it and waited. We had been in the hat shop for half an hour and my wife was still in front of the mirror.
'We mustn't buy things we don't need,' I remarked suddenly. I regretted saying it almost at once.
'You needn't have said that,' my wife answered. 'I needn't remind you of that terrible tie you bought yesterday.'
'I find it beautiful,' I said. 'A man can never have too many ties.'
'And a woman can't have too many hats,' she answered.
Ten minutes later we walked out of the shop together. My wife was wearing a hat that looked like a lighthouse!
1、’Do you call that a hat ’ I said to my wife.
call sb./sth.
eg. Just call me Tina.
“Do you call that +(冠词)+名词”这个结构可以表达一种轻蔑的含义:
Do you call that a house/a dog
2、'You needn't be so rude about it,' my wife answered as she looked at herself in the mirror.
be rude about sth.
be rude to sb.
eg.Don't be rude to me.
look at oneself in the mirror 照镜子
3、I sat down on one of those modern chairs with holes in it and waited.
one of those modern chairs
with holes in it 布满网眼的椅子
4、We had been in the hat shop for half an hour and my wife was still in front of the mirror.
5、'We mustn't buy things we don't need,' I remarked suddenly.
we don’t need
6、I regretted saying it almost at once.
regret doing sth./名词/that从句
eg. I regretted being unable to come today.
regret to do sth.

eg. You needn't have bought it.
You needn’t have come.
eg. I should have thought of that.
They shouldn’t have left so soon.
She must have been through a lot.

= I can not thank you too much.
You can never study hard too hard.

【Key structures】
must
eg. We must do everythig step by step.
You mustn’t talk like that.
needn’t = don’t have to 不必
mustn’t 不允许
在回答由must引起的问题时,如果作否定的回答,不能用mustn’t,而需用needn’t 或don’ have to, 因为mustn’t 是“一定不要”、“不准”的意思。
must 与have to 的最大区别在于:当表示过去某时不得不做完了某事,只能用had to do sth.
need
(1) 作情态动词,表示“需要”,主要用于否定句及疑问句,肯定句用must, have to, should, ought to.
eg. Need you go so soon Yes, I must./ No, I needn’t.
So I needn’t tell him, need I
eg. I hardly need say how much we missed you.
(3) need
need sth./doing/ to do
eg. Does he need to know it
You don’t need to do it yourself.
The question needs to be discussed.
I need a larger house.
He needs a haircut.
The room needs cleaning.
do not need to
eg. He doesn’t need to be told.
He needn’t be told.
