'The play may begin at any moment,' I said.
'It may have begun already,' Susan answered.
'I hurried to the ticket-office. 'May I have two tickets please ' I asked.
'I'm sorry, we've sold out,' the girl said.
'What a pity!' Susan exclaimed.
Just then, a man hurried to the ticket-office.
'Can I return these two tickets ' he asked.
'Certainly,' the girl said.
'Could I have those two tickets please ' I asked.
'Certainly, 'the girl said, 'but they are for next Wednesday's performance.
'I might as well have them,' I said sadly.

may 可能，表示推测
at any moment 在任何时候, 随时

may+动词原形, 表示对现在、未来的推测

★May 表示-请求,询问,说明一件事

Can和may表示-请求,询问的区别:
Can 可以用在第一,二人称.
may 只能用第一人称.

can,may,must + 动词原形
1.must 的用法
(1)表示-必须要做的事
※We must do every thing step by step.
※We must show concern for every student.
注:mustn’t 表示-禁止
※ You mustn’t smoke here.
(2)表示-推测,可能性(通常用于肯定句中)
※This must be your room.
※He must be 70 now.
2.can 的用法 过去式 could
(1)表示-一种能力 = ability
※ I can swim.
※ I can play the piano.
※ A blindman cannot judge colors.
※ The theater can seat 100 people.
(2)表示-请求,询问,说明一件事
※ Can you help me
What can I do for you
※ Can I come in (英)
(3)表示-推测,可能性
※The news can be true.
※She can’t be serious.
3.may 的用法 过去式 might
(1)表示-请求,询问,说明一件事
※ May I come in (比can更委婉)
※ May I trouble you with a question
※ You may take this seat if you like.
(2)表示-祝福,祝愿.
※May you success.
※May that day come soon.
(3)表示-推测,可能性
※He may be engaged now.
※ Tom may come to see us tonight, but he isn’t very sure yet.
