The world’ s water shortage
The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water. This may seem
strange to you, since nearly 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water. But
about 97% of that is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3%
—the fresh water from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources. And we can not
even use all of that. Even worse, some of it has been made dirty.
However, as things stand today, this fresh water is still enough for us. But our
need for water is becoming larger and larger quickly—almost day by day. We should
take steps to do with this problem now and in this way we can get away from a
serious worldwide water shortage (缺少) later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our valuable water. One of the first
steps is to develop ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water is used only
once and then sent out into a sewer system (下水道). From there it returns to sea or
runs into underground places.
But even if every large city reused its water, we still would not have enough. All
we'd have to do to make use of sea water in the world is to remove the salt. If we take
these steps we'll be in no danger of drying up.

In my senior year of high school, Mike and I were lined up in front of a small
group of students made up mainly of the leaders of the senior classes. Our teacher said
to us, "The two of you will never amount to anything.”
There was some snickering (窃笑 )from some of the seniors as the teacher
continued, "From now on, I am not going to waste any more time on either of you. I
am only going to spend my time with these class leaders. You two are the class downs
with bad grades, and you will never amount to anything. Now get out of here.”
That teacher did Mike and me the biggest favor of all. While what she said was
true in many ways and her words hurt us deeply, her words also inspired both of us to
work even harder. They carried us through college and into our own businesses.
A few years ago, Mike and I attended our high school reunion. It was nice to visit
with people with whom we had spent three years during a period of time when none
of us really knew who we were. It was also interesting to see that most of the so
called senior leaders had not become successful in the years after high school.
I tell this story because Mike and I were not academic whiz kids. We were
4

neither financial experts nor athletic stars. For the most part, we were slow to
average learners and students. In my opinion, we were not as naturally gifted as our
fathers. Yet it was our teacher’s stinging words and the snickering from our
classmates that gave us the strength to move forward, to learn from our mistakes and
to keep doing in both good times and bad times.
Just because you didn’t do well in school, were not popular, bad in math, or have
other reasons to underestimate yourself — none of them count in the long run. They
only count if you think they count.
For those who’re considering beginning your own financial fast track, you may
have some doubts about your abilities. Trust that you have everything you need right
now to be successful financially. All it takes to bring out your natural God given gifts
is your desire, determination and a deep faith that you have a genius and a gift that is
unique.
12. What did Mike and the author think of the teacher’s words
A. Her stinging words inspired them.
B. Her inspiring words hurt them deeply.
C. Her encouraging words helped them through bad times.
D. Her bitter words discouraged them from working harder.
13. At the school union, the author found ________.
A. their former classmates didn’t recognize him
B. it was boring to see their former classmates
C. most of the class downs turned out successful
D. most of the senior leaders didn’t become successful
14. The underlined word "whiz” in Paragraph 5 means ________.
A. know nothing B. slow C. stupid D. genius
15. According to the author, which of the following people can achieve financial
success
A. Those who have faith in themselves.
B. Those who did not do well in school.
C. Those who have natural God given gifts.
D. Those who are doubtful about their abilities.

student at Wadsworth Middle School has been looking forward to his or her turn to
attend a three day science camp. __16__ Science camp is important to the students,
and we must raise the money necessary to save it.
Without science camp, students will miss out on a unique learning experience. In
science class, they learn to identify rocks by picking them up out of a box. __17__
Science camp also lets students experiment with different forms of energy. For
example, students get to build miniature (微型的) steam engines that are powered by
campfires. They also make solar panels that heat camp water. These experiences
would be tough to create in a classroom.
Science camp is for everybody, and it won’t be saved unless everybody helps
raise money for it. To get started, Principal Jeffries and the student council could set
up a "science camp fund (资金 )” at a local bank. Every year, science camp costs
$3,000. __18__
Some people say it’s too much work to save science camp, but the fact is that if
we all help out, we can reach our goal easily. __19__ For example, we could hold a
talent auction (拍卖 ). By washing cars, babysitting, or using other talents, students
can meet the goal. We could also hold a bake sale. Students could even ask local
businesses to sponsor them.
__20__ If we all work together, we’ll easily raise the money to save it.
A. Students can raise money in many ways.
B. Now it might be canceled because of budget cuts.
C. They investigate the world through hands on science.
D. Science camp is perfect for creative and curious ones.
E. Science camp is a great tradition that deserves to be saved.
F. That sounds expensive, but if every student raises just $10, the fund would be
filled.
G. At science camp, they learn to identify rocks by finding them in mountain sides or
river beds.
