阅读理解篇212
Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly. The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis(蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly.
When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.
Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.

阅读理解篇213
A new app uses AI to tell you what your pet is thinking. It’s called Happy Pets and it studies an animal’s face, tell you what kind it is and suggests the most common animal feelings—happy, angry, sad and fearful.
The free app works on Apple iOS or Google Android. It was developed by a team including Professor Uwe Aickelin, Yunjie Jia, Pei Yun Sun and Rio Susanto who work in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne, Victoria.
The Happy Pets app uses AI, or machine learning. The researchers had to teach the technology to learn the images of animals. It then had to learn to recognize(识别) face. This is not easy because photos can be taken in so many different ways: from one side, above, below, in bright light. And different animals can have very different faces.
When the AI behind Happy Pets has learnt all these things, it then has to be able to recognize different feelings based on facial expressions(表情) and it has to learn from thousands of examples. For example, if a dog tightens(收紧) its eyes and mouth while changing the position of its ears in a special way, it’s a sign of being frightened.
How about the results In an online article for Melbourne University’s Pursuit, the researchers write they’re happy with how the app performs.
“Well, we think they are pretty dependable and the app has been widely tested, but you should judge for yourself sometimes, “the researchers wrote.
“At the moment, our app can only test several animal types, so if yours isn’t there, it might get matched with the latest one.”

3. What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about
A. The ways the app works. B. The place to get the app.
C. The reasons for using the app. D. The advice on using the app.
4. What do the researchers think of the app’s performance
A. Exciting. B. Satisfying. C. Worrying. D. Unexpected.

Michael lived with disabilities in his life. He seldom talked with others. Starting at the age of 5, he looked for jobs in different companies, but all of them turned him down. He was especially sad because he doesn’t have a job to support himself.
This caused Michael to do something for himself. He took business classes through the Rhode Island Developmental Disability Center. Once he completed the program, he opened a coffee shop. Within three weeks, the coffee shop became one of the most popular places in the city. Michael and Sheila saw the impact(影响), and they realized that the best thing about a coffee shop was its sense of community.
People come in, and they communicate with each other and become close. It is also a great chance for people to learn about people with disabilities and what they can do just like other people if they’re given time to shine.
Sheila believed opening the shop helped Michael a lot. She saw how he stood higher than before. He lit up the room with his smile and greeted every customer with a smile. In my opinion, China’s “Double Reduction” Policy(“双减”政策)aimed at easing(减轻)education-related pressure on parents and children is effective. Now take my home as an example to show how it works.
“Dad! Get up! You promised to take us to the zoo today!” my two daughters shouted together one recent Saturday morning. The clock had just struck seven, but our house had already gotten noisier than the monkeys in the zoo!
For families with children, weekends have become very different. In the past, my wife and I could at least sleep in(睡懒觉). Then at 9 o’clock, we had to wake up the kids. After throwing them into a tutoring class(辅导班), we could enjoy several hours to ourselves. But now, these classes are gone altogether. Kids, of course, are happy about this. Every Tuesday or Wednesday evening, my girls would ask me, “Where are we going to spend this coming Saturday ”
Luckily, there are still some classes for them to attend. On Sundays, my girls go to learn ballet and chess. They really enjoy their time there. My elder daughter is old enough to read quietly on her own. On lucky days, we can get her to read together with her sister. Still, a quiet “competition” is on. My girls sometimes talk about how their classmates have spent an exciting weekend. It’s their way of complaining about my laziness.
Weekends are more tiring now for parents, but I think they are good for kids. After all, childhood should be more than just studying school subjects. It should be more colorful.

A few years ago, when my mother was visiting the city where I worked, she asked me to go shopping with her because she needed a new dress. I don’t like to go shopping with other people because I’m not a patient person, but we went shopping together at last.
We visited nearly every store that sold ladies’ dresses, and my mother tried on one after another, rejecting them all. As the day went on, I became tired of it and my mother was disappointed.
Finally at our last stop my mother tried on a lovely blue three-piece dress. The dress had a bow at the neckline, and as I stood in the dressing room with her, I watched as she tried, with much difficulty, to tie the bow. Her hands were so badly hurt in a serious disease that she couldn’t do it. Suddenly, my impatience gave in to a strong understanding for her, I turned away, trying to hide the tears that I couldn’t keep back.
After a while, I turned back to tie the bow for her. The dress was beautiful, and she bought it. Our shopping trip was over, but I couldn’t forget it. For the rest of the day, my mind kept returning to that moment in the dressing room and my mother’s hands trying to tie that bow. Those loving hands that had fed me, bathed me, dressed me, hugged and comforted me, and, most of all, prayed for me, were now touching me in a very great manner.

Either make students buy school uniforms (in other words, all students must wear the same uniforms).
Or say which colors must be worn, but let students buy their own clothes in these colors.
A survey made at Central High School, Philadelphia, showed that most of the students didn’t think that wearing school uniforms was a good idea.

1 What does Happy Pets mainly do
A. Make pets happy. B. Tell pets’ special habits.
C. Find pets’ feelings. D. Teach people how to raise pets.
2. Why does Happy Pets have to learn to recognize faces
A. Because faces can show animals’ feelings.
B. Because it wants to have emotions of humans.
C. Because it is learning to use facial expressions.
D. Because the types of animals are based on the looks.
3. What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about
A. The ways the app works. B. The place to get the app.
C. The reasons for using the app. D. The advice on using the app.
4. What do the researchers think of the app’s performance
A. Exciting. B. Satisfying. C. Worrying. D. Unexpected.
5. What can we infer about the app from the article
A. It can test the feelings of many animals. B. It attracts many users by its low price.
C. It still needs to be improved in animal types. D. It wins the support of many research teams.

1. What is the aim of the “Double Reduction” Policy
A. To ease education-related pressure on parents and children.
B. To make parents stay with their children at weekends.
C. To make parents have more time for themselves at weekends.
D. To make children and their parents have a good time at weekends.
2. What did the writer do with his children one recent Saturday morning
A. They travelled to the countryside. B. They went camping.
C. They went to the zoo. D. They went to a tutoring class.
3. When the tutoring classes are gone altogether, children are________.
A. tired B. sad C. happy D. surprised
4. Which of the following is NOT true
A. The writer’s elder daughter is old enough to read quietly by herself.
B. The “Double Reduction” Policy is effective.
C. The writer’s children learn ballet and chess on Sundays now.
D. Weekends are more relaxing for parents because of the “Double Reduction” Policy.
5. What might be the writer’s attitude(态度)toward the Policy
A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Doubtful. D. Unsure.

Later in the evening, I went to my mother’s room, took her hands in mine, kissed them and much to her surprise, told her that to me they were the most beautiful hands in the world.
