One day last January, 5 of my students prepared to lock their smart phones in a box and stop all Internet use for the next two weeks. This marked the start of a course I taught. During the rest of the school year, I teach high school chemistry, but this mini-course gave my students and me a chance to study the role of technology in our lives.
Over the next few days, most students felt anxious. Without their phones, they weren’t sure what to do when there was nothing to do. That’s when it hit me: I long for（渴望）the kind of time alone with my thoughts that my students feared. I use these moments to replay a difficult conversation until I know where it went wrong, imagine myself living in another country, and consider how I will feel when my parents pass away. I look at a person sitting nearby and invent the story of her life.
As we closed in on the final days of the course, I noticed all the kids changed a lot. They were no longer anxious and began to talk about the beauty of time slowing down. They went for walks, created music, and played games with younger sisters and brothers. They experienced life in the moment.
On the last day, when I returned the phones, I expected the kids to turn on their phones immediately and go straight to social media. Instead, many of them left the classroom with screens still dark, saying they wanted to see how long they could wait.
I know the pull of smart phones and the Internet is strong, but I’m hoping the short break from social media has shown my students that they have a choice in what to do in their downtime, while they’re waiting in line for coffee or walking home. I hope they use the valuable chance to daydream.

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse.
But if you get a closer look you will notice something quite interesting. One of the horses is blind. His owner has chosen not to kill it, but has made him a safe and comfortable barn (牲口棚) to live in. This alone is amazing. But if you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell. It is coming from a smaller horse in the field.

While glass buildings may seem like a harmless quality of modern buildings, this is not true with the millions of birds who fly into windows every year—but this Canadian city is quickly becoming a leading example on how to protect birds from the dangers of glass.
Toronto made history in 409 when it became the first city in the world to make bird-friendly buildings. This means that any building that is built in Toronto must join several features(功能) that prevent birds from accidentally flying into the glass.
For starters, Toronto buildings are different from those in other cities. There are some kinds of pictures on the glass. Seeing the pictures, birds won’t fly to the glass. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been passed down for more than 2,000 years in China. TCM includes acupuncture (针灸), medicine, exercise such as tai chi and qigong, and other treatments. Today TCM is not only widely used in Asia, but also more and more popular in the USA.
In New York City’s Chinatown, a lot of patients visit Wu Yigiao, a TCM master from Zhejiang. Some of them are Chinese, and some are Americans. Wu has been practicing TCM in the USA for 2 years. Before that, he practiced it in China for 5 years. He has a deep understanding of TCM. “TCM, acupuncture and other TCM treatments are of great help to patients,” Wu said. “They can help reduce the pain without surgery (外科手术).”
TCM is so helpful that some Americans have also chosen to work on it. Frank Griffo has been an acupuncturist in California for about 2 years. Computers, smartphones, and other machines are the perfect servants. They always do what they are “told”. We usually “tell” them to do things by using a mouse or keyboard. But what if we could just talk to them normally and tell them what to do
This type of technology, known as voice control or voice recognition（识别）, has been shown in films and TV shows since the 360s. The TV show Star Trek showed some spaceships which could reply to human voice commands（命令）. The film 401: A Space Odyssey showed a computer that human astronauts could talk to. It was mainly used to play chess and repair the astronauts’ spaceship.
On the other hand, real-world voice recognition is used for more everyday tasks. For example, Apple and Amazon made two pieces of voice recognition software. They can be asked to do many things, such as setting alarms and playing music and so on.
One of the nice things about voice recognition is that it can be used when we’re on the go. When you’re driving a car or walking down the street, it’s not convenient or even dangerous to pick up your smartphone and type away on the keyboard. Voice recognition allows you to focus on whatever you’re doing at the moment while still doing other tasks.
Speech recognition software is also helpful to deaf people. It can be used to “listen” to spoken words and turn them into text that deaf people can read. Some speech recognition software can even hear words spoken in one language and then translate them into another language.

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse.
But if you get a closer look you will notice something quite interesting. One of the horses is blind. His owner has chosen not to kill it, but has made him a safe and comfortable barn (牲口棚) to live in. This alone is amazing. But if you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell. It is coming from a smaller horse in the field.
His owner ties the horse’s halter (缰绳) to a small, copper-colored bell. It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow.
As you stand and watch these two friends, you’ll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse, and make sure that the blind horse can hear the bell, slowly walk to where he is, and won’t get lost.
When the horse with the bell returns to the barn each evening, he will stop sometimes to look back, making sure that the blind friend isn’t too far behind to hear the bell.
Like the owners of these two horses, we aren’t thrown away just because we are not perfect. Or because we have problems or challenges. Sometimes we are the blind horse, being guided by the little ringing bell. And at other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way.

For starters, Toronto buildings are different from those in other cities. There are some kinds of pictures on the glass. Seeing the pictures, birds won’t fly to the glass. Computers, smartphones, and other machines are the perfect servants. They always do what they are “told”. We usually “tell” them to do things by using a mouse or keyboard. But what if we could just talk to them normally and tell them what to do
This type of technology, known as voice control or voice recognition（识别）, has been shown in films and TV shows since the 360s. The TV show Star Trek showed some spaceships which could reply to human voice commands（命令）. The film 401: A Space Odyssey showed a computer that human astronauts could talk to. When you’re driving a car or walking down the street, it’s not convenient or even dangerous to pick up your smartphone and type away on the keyboard.
