Every language has its idioms, which are groups of words with meanings different from the meanings of the individual words. Idioms make language more colourful and expressive. Since sport is an inseparable part of day-to-day life, there are lots of sports idioms that have found their way into everyday language. Let’s take a look at some of them!

Horse racing is a more traditional sport originated in the United Kingdom. It has a long history and a deep social background, so there are many idioms related to horse racing. For example, “give and take” means a form of horse racing in which the weight of the horse is determined according to the height of the horse. A horse that is above the standard height should carry more weight than the standard weight, and a horse that is below the standard height should carry less weight than the standard weight to ensure a fair race. The trophy is called a “give and take plate”. “Give and take” came to mean fair exchange.
“Dark horse” used to refer to an unknown horse that sometimes wins unexpectedly. And now it also refers to a candidate who is unexpectedly nominated or elected. “An underdog”, on the other hand, is a player who has no hope of winning, that is a person or team on the wrong side of a race and likely to lose.
