Be Happy
努力让自己开心起来吧!
What makes you happy The answer may be various (各种各样的): doing well at school, being picked to play in a sports team or receiving the birthday present you wanted. In fact, happiness is largely influenced by your actions.
What is International Day of Happiness
Every year since 2013, the world has celebrated International Day of Happiness. It falls on 20th March and was created by the United Nations (UN). This year, the theme for International Day of Happiness is “Keep calm. Stay wise. Be kind.” Keeping calm reminds people not to let their worries get out of control. As for staying wise, this means choosing activities that make you happy, such as exercise. And research has shown that being kind to others actually makes you happier.
Why does happiness matter
Happiness is what allows humans to grow healthily. Research has shown that happier people are more likely to live longer.
Happiness is so important that some schools and universities now teach students “how to be happy.” Laurie Santos, a professor at Yale University in the US, teaches one of these courses. She said, “There's lots of scientific research that shows we can improve our happiness if we use the right strategies ( 策略). We think happiness is about having the perfect circumstances (环境), but the research shows that it comes in other ways.”
What if I don’t feel happy all the time
No one feels happy all the time. It's OK to feel angry, nervous or sad from time to time. This is especially true when life throws unexpected challenges your way. However, if you feel unhappy for a long time, you should speak to someone you trust and try to solve the problem together with him or her.He Taught Life Lessons Through Cycling
他用骑行开启学生的人生新篇章。
After cycling about 2,000 kilometers, Lan Huiyun and his 13 students finally reached their destination (目的地) — Qinghai Lake in Qinghai Province — on June 26, 2022. They finished their ride around the lake on June 29 and returned home by train the next day.
Lan is a geography teacher from a middle school in Shuozhou, Shanxi Province. He started out with his students on June 12, several days after they finished the gaokao. They set off from their school and passed through five provinces before arriving in Qinghai.
In early May, Lan began to plan a bicycle route (路线) that would be safe and also allow the students to experience local sights and customs. He also trained the students in bicycle repairing and basic first aid to ensure their safety.
However, they still met some difficulties, such as flat tires and lack of oxygen (爆胎和缺氧) along their way. “When I noticed their tiredness and low spirits, I would give them some snacks or tell a joke to encourage them to keep moving forward,” Lan said.
It was not the first time Lan had organized such a journey. In 2016, he and seven of his students rode from Shuozhou to Manzhouli. And in 2019, Lan and 11 students spent 16 days cycling from Shuozhou to Shanghai. “I've never thought that a teacher's task is only to teach from textbooks,” Lan said. “I hope my students will experience real life and learn how to deal with difficulties through the activities I create for them.”
Although it costs time and energy to organize such activities, Lan said he was happy to see his students' growth during the trips. “I will continue to bring more students to cycle outside our city in the future,” Lan said.Enjoy your boredom
无聊有时也不是坏事呢!
It might be a surprise to hear that being bored sometimes is good for kids. But it’s true.
Boredom can help you kids be present and understand the world around you. One of the great things kids have is curiosity (好奇心) about the things that adults take for granted, like the colors of a butterfly and the noises of a truck. Making those discoveries is how you learn. If you never get bored, you never discover how interesting the world really is.
Kids’ brains need to stay active, but they need downtime (休息), too. To leave space for downtime, you can schedule (为……安排时间) it with your family. It is helpful. Make sure that you have a couple of afternoons or evenings per week when you don’t have an organized activity.
Boredom can help you be creative, too. Thinking out of the box can help you solve problems that seem small to adults, but are huge to you. If your schedules and brains are always filled with activities, you’ll have no need to imagine a story, wonder how things work, etc.
Of course, being bored all the time isn’t healthy. Where’s the line between too much boredom and not enough It’s different for every kid and every family, and it may take some time to find out where your line is. It can be hard to be bored. But it will achieve something else important: developing you into interesting, funny, thoughtful people who can have dinner time conversations and deal with long car rides. That’s good for you and your family.
【记一记】
1. take ... for granted (因视为当然而)不把……当回事
2. think out of the box 跳出框框想问题;另辟蹊径When tests make you nervous
期末考试临近了,你感到紧张吗?一起来看看如何应对考试时的紧张情绪吧。
When the day of a big test at school comes, some students feel nervous. They may have a stomachache or a headache. “Hey, that sounds just like me!” You may say this when you’re reading this passage. If so, you need to take steps to lessen (减轻) your test anxiety (忧虑). Here are some ways to do that.
Ask for help.
Talk to your parents, your teachers, or your friends. Talking to someone about test anxiety can make you feel better. Describe what happens to you when you’re taking a test and these people may help you out.
Stop bad thoughts.
Don’t send yourself any bad messages about the test such as “I’m not good at taking tests” or “I will be sad if I get a bad grade”. These thoughts can make anxiety worse and make it harder for you to do well in the test.
Breathe better.
Do you know that breathing exercises can help make you less nervous Here’s how to do it: breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose, and then breathe out slowly through your mouth. Do this two to four times when you’re taking a test, and you might feel better.
Accept mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes. If you have prepared for the test and done your best, that’s enough.
