When Millet was a boy he worked on his needy father's farm. At the rest hour in the fields the other workers would all take naps (打盹儿),but young Millet would spend time drawing. Finally the village where he lived gave him a little money to Paris to study art.
When Millet reached Paris, he had a tough time. Fortunately, when he was almost starving, someone bought one of his peasant paintings, which enabled his family to leave for Barbizon.
Millet's pictures of peasants at work were painted in a unique way. The painter would go out on the farms and watch them carefully, then he would come home and paint what he had seen. So astonishingly accurate was his memory that he could paint at home without models and get all the movements of his figures right. When he did need a figure to go by he would ask his wife to pose for him.
One of his noted artworks is called "The Sower", which shows a man seeding. He reaches into his bag for seed and then swings backward to scatter (撒播) the seed, and with each swing of his hand the sower strides (大步走) forward. In Millet's picture the sower has been working hard, but his swinging step and arm still move smoothly, like a machine. Only the man's head reveals his great tiredness.
Another masterpiece is called "The Gleaners". A gleaner is someone picking up the leftover in the field after the wheat harvest. When farmers near Barbizon are extremely badly-off, even the little the gleaners can find is a help. You can see from Millet's picture what back-breaking work gleaning must be.
4. What do we know about Millet
A. His wife supported him to be a painter. B. He was keen on painting as a kid.
C. He spent his whole life in Barbizon. D. He was brought up in Paris.
5. How did he paint the laboring farmers
A. Asking models for help.
B. Imagining figures in the field.
C. Remembering what he had observed.
D. Recalling the days on his father's farm.
6. What do Millet's works convey
A. The farmers' hardships
B. The scene of gardening
C. His love for the village
D. His anxiety about the farmers
7. The text is most likely to be found in
A. A short-story collection
B. A personal diary
C. A magazine of art
D. A science magazine
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. C

根据第一段中“When Millet was a boy he worked on his needy father's farm.At the rest hour in the fields the other workers would all take naps, but young Millet would spend time drawing.” (当Millet还是个孩子的时候,他在他父亲的农场工作。在田间休息的时候,其他的工人都会打盹,但小Millet会花时间画画。)由此可知,Millet从小就喜欢画画。故选B 。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段中“The painter would go out on the farms and watch them carefully—digging, hoeing, spreading manure, sawing wood, or sowing grain. Then he would come home and paint what he had seen. ”(画家会到农场去,仔细地看他们挖土、锄地、撒肥料、锯木头或播种。然后回到家,把他所看到的画出来。)由此可知,他通过记住他所观察到的来描绘劳动的农民。故选C。
3.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“In Millet's picture the sower has been working hard, but his swinging step and arm still move smoothly, like a machine. Only the man's head reveals his great tiredness. ”(在Millet的画中,播种者一直在努力工作,但他摆动的步伐和手臂仍然流畅地移动,像一台机器。只有这个男人的头部显露出他极度的疲惫。)以及最后一段中“You can see from Millet's picture what back-breaking work
gleaning must be. ”(从Millet的画中可以看出,拾穗是一项多么累人的工作。)由此可推知,Millet的作品传达了农民的艰辛。故选A 。

As technology continues to evolve, museums are starting to incorporate (并入) it to support their aim of preserving history.
Today’s museums are looking at how they can include apps, digital interactivity and virtual reality (VR) in their exhibitions, to encourage further visitor engagement. In Italy alone, over half of museums were planning to introduce augmented reality (AR), even before the dip (下降,衰退) in visitor numbers during the pandemic.
Multi-touch screens developer Zytronic has collaborated with its clients on providing some of the most interesting innovations in technology used in museums in recent years.
Story of the Forest, National Museum of Singapore
The Story of the Forest is a gorgeous immersive art exhibition, based in the National Museum of Singapore. The installation utilizes (使用) 69 pieces of art from the museum’s most prized collection, the William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings. These drawings have been turned into 3D interactive animations through the use of some creative technology.
Created by teamLab, a digital art collective from Japan, the Story of the Forest takes you, through the colonial (殖民的) history of Singapore, right up to modern day. Visitors can walk through the exhibition and view the gorgeous animated drawings. The installation begins with darkness, the images slowly revealed as you walk through the black space.
The interactive element is introduced via (经由) an app, downloadable from the Apple or Google Play stores. Once downloaded, the app allows you to snap a photo of the animated drawings and discover further information about the animals pictured. The app has a section titled “My Collection” where you can store images you have taken and work towards discovering all the interactive elements of the exhibition. You can also take a closer look at each individual animal and discover more about its rarity level and species.
This display functions as a kind of interactive safari, taking you through various habitats. It has been a permanent exhibition at the museum since 2016, proving its popularity with visitors!

Gene-editing has created a generation of musical crops. It has been known for some time that plants can talk to one another.
Many communicate chemically, both through the air and via their root s— warning each other, for example, of the arrival of herbivorous (食草的) insects in order to co-ordinate their responses to these pests. Those responses are also often a form of communication, namely a further release of chemicals that recruit predators and parasites (捕食者和寄生虫) of said herbivores. These then solve their summoners’(召唤者) problems by having lunch.
Plants’ interactions with sound are less well understood, though it is known that flowers such as evening primroses (月见草) can detect the buzzing of bees and respond by producing sweeter nectar(蜜汁). Moreover, a paper published in this week's Cell, by Lilach Hadany of Tel-Aviv University and her colleagues, describes how plants make noises when they are stressed by drought or physical damage.
Dr Hadany and her team do not yet know whether other plants are listening, but suspect that they might be. None of this is news, however, to Paolo Fril, CEO and chief scientist of the Gene Duplication Corporation (GeneDupe), a biotechnology firm in San Melito, California. Observing that gardeners and greenhouse owners, from Britain’s new king, Charles III, downwards, often talk to their plants, and sometimes even play them music, he and his team have been investigating plants’ aural (听觉) and oral activities for several years, and are now adjusting them using crispr-Cas9 gene-editing technology.
The plan is to create a range of products which Dr Fril hopes will please his firm’s shareholders — which he needs to do after an awkward run-in the company had a few years ago with some animal-rights activists over its previous product, Print-a-pet.
12. How do plants convey information
A. Through their leaves.
B. Through their branches.
C. Through the soil.
D. Through the chemicals they release.
13. Which statement is true
A. The release of the chemicals can also help to protect the plants themselves.
B. The example of evening primroses proves crops’ hearing has been well understood
C. Herbivores can be killed directly by the chemicals
D. Lilach Hadany wrote a paper alone.
14. From paragraph 4 we can learn that___________.
A. Dr Hadany has known that all the plants can hear
B. Britain's new king, Charles III, joined in the research
C. that plants can sense sound is not a new story for Dr Fril
D. Dr Hadany is considering using crispr-Cas9 gene-editing technology
15. Why did Dr Fril decide to do the research
A. To set up his reputation as a scientist.
B. To make the company’s shareholders happy.
C. To produce a special product to make money.
D. To help Tel-Aviv University research the hearing of the plants.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B

第二节
读后续写 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下列材料,根据内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The familiar smell of garlic and onion filled the air as I opened my lunch bag to see what my mom had packed for me. On any other occasion, I would have been delighted to eat my mom’s pan-fried tofu: a Chinese dish that I often ate for dinner. But not today, the day a nice girl had invited me, the new girl at school, to sit with her friends during lunch.
“Charis, over here!” My new friend was waving her arms, trying to get my attention.
As I prepared to walk over to the table, memories of elementary and middle school lunchtimes resurfaced. I remembered my embarrassment as my friends would hold their noses when I brought homemade Chinese food. I remembered how my embarrassment shifted to anger when I complained about the smell to my mom.
I had argued with my mom that I wanted “normal” food for lunch. I remembered the look on my mom’s face, a mix between disappointment and confusion. But I was determined and she gave in. So for the remainder of middle school, my mom packed odorless (没有气味的), non-Chinese food like ham and cheese sandwiches. However, that day, she was in a rush and packed me leftovers from dinner.
As soon as I got to my new lunch table, I tried to hide my lunch bag down under my seat. I sat quietly, trying not to be noticed when Katrina, a new acquaintance, asked where my food was. “I’m not really hungry,” I replied in an insecure voice. But Katrina had already seen me carry my lunch so she spoke out, “Then, I’ll eat it!” The other girls laughed — apparently Katrina was known to be a big eater.
I didn’t want to be rude to a potentially new friend, so I reluctantly dragged out my lunch bag. The moment I lifted the lid (盖子) of my lunch container, I could practically taste the garlic and onion. The girls, piqued (激起好奇心) by the smell in the air, all curiously looked at the oval-shaped container. I expected an “Ew” or a “What is that ”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I expected them to turn away — and turn me away.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I arrived home, my mom asked how my day went.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I expected them to turn away — and turn me away. What I did not expect was that Katrina instantly grabbed a small piece of tofu and eat it. And I most certainly did not expect her to encourage the rest of the table to try my lunch. My new friends were going on about how lucky I was that my mom took the time to prepare a cooked meal for me. They were surprised by the fact that tofu could actually taste good. While I didn’t get to eat any of my mom's pan-fried tofu, I was full of pride and gratitude.
When I arrived home, my mom asked how my day went. Answering with a simple “Good,” I pulled out my lunch container from my bag. “I’m sorry, but I didn’t have time to buy bread or ham yesterday.” But when she noticed that the container was empty, she hesitated before asking “How was the food ” I paused a moment before I replied, “Perfect, mom. If it’s not too much trouble, can I still have pan-fried tofu for lunch tomorrow ” (161 words)

B. Imagining figures in the field.
C. Remembering what he had observed.
D. Recalling the days on his father's farm.
6. What do Millet's works convey
A. The farmers' hardships
B. The scene of gardening
C. His love for the village
D His anxiety about the farmers
7. The text is most likely to be found in
A. A short-story collection
B. A personal diary
