“You have cancer.” It was the fourth time in seventeen years I'd heard those words. The doctors wanted to put me on a drug for five years. I knew it would take away the joy out of my life. After my husband died, I understood that nobody has five years to spare. So I told the doctors, “No, thanks.”
Usually I don't pay much attention to my bookshelves, but it was about this time that I happened to notice how crowded they looked. Most of the books had been worth reading once— but not more than once. Why were they still hanging around I found some old plastic bags from the kitchen. I pulled the books off the shelves and put them in bags. With each book I bagged, I seemed to feel a tiny thing causing me worry come off my shoulders. The idea of not making room for them any longer lifted my spirits. I gave them away to the Friends of the Library the next time I drove by there.
My kitchen cupboards(橱柜)were filled with tools I'm awkward to admit I never used. I gave my kitchen extras to the Salvation Army and in return received a cheerful word of blessing.
Owning fewer books saved me maybe ten seconds a month on cleaning, and with fewer unused things in kitchen cupboards I found what I wanted faster. But why should losing something make me feel like a big relief Leaving that question for others to debate, I began to scan the house for things to get rid of. I cleared space like a pioneer clearing land. Sorting out needless possessions(所有物)taught me what was my job and what wasn't.
No longer did I have to press my life into the space my possessions allowed. I found more time to do whatever was worth doing. Five years have passed. Cancer has not shown up again. Whatever comes my way tomorrow, I have lived today.
24. What was the author's attitude toward taking drugs for five years
A. Satisfied. B. Doubtful. C. Unwilling. D. Unconcerned.

A. Stronger than We Think B. More Important than Fear
C. Keeping Less, Living More D. Take More Shortcuts in Life

Tokyo-based Alt Incorporated, a Japanese company, is working on creating a digital double that could be used for things like carrying out early job interviews or communicating with a person's doctor ahead of a medical visit. The company's CEO, Kazutaka Yonekura, said the main purpose of a digital double would be to take over some of a person's daily online duties.
Yonekura showed AP reporters his own digital double on a computer. It included an image and digitized version(版本)of his voice. When his digital double was asked, “What kind of music do you like,” it waited several seconds before giving a long answer. The double explained that Yonekura prefers lively music such as hip-hop or rock ‘n’ roll.
Compared to other digital assistants(助手), such as Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant, Yonekura said, a digital double just belongs to you and not the technology company that created it. Yonekura added that his developers had attempted to build tools into the system that are designed to prevent awkward social mistakes.
Currently, digital doubles are very costly. Each Alt double costs about $140, 000, so it will likely take time before there is a huge market for the doubles.
Digital doubles are created by taking an individual's data from social media websites as well as publicly available records. The data is continuously changed and stored in the system. And it is designed to keep up with the individual's changing habits and activities.
The idea of a digital double reportedly enjoys widespread appeal (吸引力)in Japan— the country that gave the world Pokemon, karaoke, Hello Kitty and emojis. But Yonekura admits that cultures are different, and Westerners may not like the idea as much. “I can't tell you how many times I've been asked: Why does it have to be a personal double, and not just a digital agent ” he said.
28. What can we learn about a digital double from paragraph 1
A. It can open and close the door for humans.
B. It will free humans from some online work.
C. It will replace humans to do daily activities.
D. It looks and talks just like its human owner.
29. Why is the question and answer about music mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To give a presentation. B. To explain a principle.
C. To introduce an opinion. D. To describe an argument.
30. What is special about a digital double compared to other digital assistants
A. It's safe. B. It's cheap. C. It's flexible. D. It's personal.
31. What may make some Westerners dislike the idea of a digital double
A. High prices. B. Special styles. C. Small markets. D. Cultural differences.

Scientists say extreme rainfall happens more often this summer. Nick Goltz is head of the UConn Plant Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut. He said too much water can mean dead plants in a garden though water is a must for plant life.
Goltz explained that flooding cuts off the oxygen supply which leads to root-rot(根腐)diseases. And then plants cannot pull enough water to survive. The result is yellow, weakening leaves, which would usually show a plant's need for water. But after flooding, those same signs mean that roots under water cannot function in really wet conditions.
Avoid walking on wet soil if your garden has been affected by flooding. Wait until the soil has mostly dried before looking at the damage. Adding any weight or pressure to wet soil can cause even more oxygen to be pressed out from around struggling roots. Plants weakened or stressed by flood water can more easily get diseases and unwanted insects. So keep an eye on them and treat problems as they come, which could be months later. Broken tree branches should be removed immediately. But save any major removal of leaves and branches for when conditions improve to avoid further weakening an already stressed tree.
Can flooded fruits, vegetables, and other crops still be eaten Goltz said, “If the part you're eating touches the water, then it's probably hazardous, even if washed or cooked.” “That is because in addition to bacteria(细菌)from standing water, runoff from nearby gardens, chemicals, and other waste could be present,” Goltz added.
Flooded soil loses nutrients(营养)and can damage the way water flows through it. After dealing with your plants' needs, turn your attention to the flooded soil and take some actions to make it repaired. Mixing in sand will improve the way water flows through it. If you live in an area that easily floods, there are steps you can take to avoid or lessen future damage, such as growing vegetables in higher areas or raised beds. Or you could direct water away from the plants you care about most.
32. What message can we get from Goltz's words in paragraph 1
A. A rainbow comes after rain. B. Never fish in troubled water.
C. Too much of anything is good for nothing. D. Always make preparations for a rainy day.
33. Why should walking on wet soil in the garden be avoided
A. It might harden the soil. B. It might break struggling roots.
C. It will add bacteria to the roots. D. It will remove more oxygen from the plants.
34. What does the underlined word “hazardous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Unsafe. B. Special. C. Tasty. D. Juicy.
35. What are people advised to do in the last paragraph
A. Grow high crops. B. Repair the soil.
C. Protect the plants. D. Build an ecosystem.

An unlucky experience in my youth left me with an almost extreme fear of snakes. No matter how much I tried to learn about snakes, I found myself shaking with fear at so much as a photograph in a magazine or a toy snake.
Then, I became a mother. Time flew. When my son reached Cub Scout(童子军)age, I signed him up for the local pack. Within a short time, I volunteered to work as a caregiver.
A family camping trip to the local Scout campgrounds provided opportunities for the boys to learn at a variety of nature stations. I went from one post to another with the kids excitedly. All my positive feelings disappeared, however, when the staff member pointed us up the path to the next post.
“You guys are going to love the reptile(爬行动物)station,” a staff member announced.
“They've got a live snake you can hold.”
Live Hold Was he kidding I almost turned and ran away until I remembered I was responsible for these boys. I couldn't leave them.
The boys ran to the reptile station. I forced my feet to follow them.
The young man there went through his presentation on the importance of snakes in the environment with good humor and lots of information.
“Are you ready to meet Humphrey ” he asked.
The boys cheered. The young man carried a snake from a covered container beside the table.
He regarded Humphrey as a camp mascot(吉祥物)for a few years. As he talked about the characters of the species, he held the snake on his arm. The snake rested quietly there as the young man spoke. He explained the snake was not a threat to humans.

第一节
【参考范文】
To express our gratitude to our parents, our school encouraged us students to cook a meal on weekends for our parents.
I was at a loss when I was in the kitchen. I had no choice but to turn to my smartphone. Guided by the process of cooking from an app, I began to get prepared for the meal. As a result, the porridge boiled over. The pieces of bread in the pan turned black, leaving the kitchen in a mess. However, seeing the meal I cooked, my parents were moved, and gave me a big hug.
Exhausted as I was, I was more than pleased with this meaningful experience.

Naturally, they all wanted to hold him. But I tried to keep a “safe” distance from the snake.
“Don't you want to hold him, Ms. Mary Beth ” one of the boys asked me. He held out the snake toward me. I had no choice as an adult but to accept his offering, prepared to die on the spot. I expected cold and wet. What I got was dry and soft. Could this snake read my mind In those moments, Humphrey brought me out of a world of fear and into a world of wonder. He taught me to look past labels like “snake” and see beyond to individuals like Humphrey.
