Material analysis
What The reading text in this section introduces one of the masterpieces in China and that is the Qingming Scroll. The author gives a full account of the three main sections, the artistic technique, the message conveyed in the Qingming Scroll as well as its historical value and powerful influence. There are six paragraphs in total. In paragraph 1, the author gives a brief introduction to the Qingming Scroll. Then it goes into detail about its three main sections, which is further introduced in paragraph 2. In the next paragraph, the author focuses on the artistic technique Zhang Zeduan used in creating the scroll. In paragraph 4, based on the fine detail depicted in the scroll, the author leads the readers to look at some political and social problems hidden behind the superficial prosperity. In the last two paragraphs, the value and the influence of the Qingming Scroll are summarized and highly praised. How This is an essay to introduce the Qingming Scroll to the students. Each paragraph talks about different aspects and they are closely related, from the brief introduction at the beginning to the value and popularity in the end, from concrete to abstract. Therefore, the text is shown to us paragraph by paragraph, step by step like an scroll being unrolled. In the process of reading, the author reveals the detail and information of the scroll to the readers. In addition, besides the last paragraph, each paragraph is led by the topic sentence, which makes the essay well organized and structured. Why Based on the introduction, this text is designed to have students know about the remarkable artistic technique Zhang Zeduan used so as to cultivate students’ appreciation of art. In the meantime, by analyzing the scroll, students could gain some information of the life in the Northern Song Dynasty, and acquire some knowledge of the depth and width of history and culture and the magnificence of the ancient civilization in our motherland. From all these, students could strengthen their confidence in Chinese culture and shoulder the responsibility of passing down Chinese culture and civilization.
Student analysis
Students of this class are from Senior High 2 in Maanshan No. 2 High School. They have mastered certain vocabulary and sentence structures as well as reading skills. They are interested in Chinese culture and some of them have learned painting before. Therefore, it will not be difficult for them to get involved in the class. In addition, they are willing to voice their opinions but they may have difficulty in understanding some complex sentences and infer the purpose of the author, which requires the teacher’s guidance.

Read for the detailed information. (Objective 2 and 3) Have SS read paragraph 2 and fill in the table. Read paragraph 2 and fill in the table. To make SS aware of the three sections of the scroll.
Have SS read paragraph 3. Find out the artistic technique Zhang used and fill in the blanks. In this paragraph, there are many adjectives like amazing, realistic, remarkable, impressive, precise, well-developed, ambitious, enormous. Ask SS: Why did the author use so many adjectives Read paragraph 3 and fill in the blanks. Find out adjectives used in this paragraph and understand the value of the scroll. To have SS pay attention to the artistic technique Zhang Zeduan used in creating the scroll. Try to infer the intention and the attitude of the author.
Have SS pay attention to the word “comprehensive” in paragraph 4. Then read the paragraph and find out why the author used “comprehensive” and further tell what aspects Zhang Zeduan revealed in the Qingming Scroll. Read paragraph 4 and complete the framework of the content and the problems shown in the scroll. To have SS focus on the detail depicted and the deep meaning conveyed.

Post- Reading (Objective 3 and 4) 1. Appreciate the scroll Have SS personally observe the scroll and locate which section they are facing. Invite them to talk about their feelings at the first sight of the scroll and tell what they can see in the scroll. (Use transportation methods, business practices and buildings these three aspects as examples to have SS try to find them out in the Observe the scroll carefully and locate what has been talked about in this lesson. To offer SS an opportunity to appreciate the scroll on their own. Three aspects can be easily found in nearly each section so SS can

2. Discuss in groups Have SS pay attention to two sentences in the essay. Then have them work in groups and discuss: What attitude should we have towards the cultural relics such as the Qingming Scroll Think about what they should do with this masterpiece and discuss with partners. To strengthen SS’ confidence in Chinese culture and shoulder the duty of spreading Chinese culture.
Summary Show SS a video in which people and animals in the scroll are walking and moving. Watch the video. To give SS visual and audio experience of being part of the scroll.
Homework Combine the bookmarks of the Qingming Scroll together and see if you can compose a whole scroll. Describe what you can see on the bookmark you have and write down your feelings and opinions. Try to put the bookmarks together and write down what they see in their own bookmark and what they feel about it. The first one is to help them locate and review three sections. The second one is to help them consolidate what has been learned in this lesson.

In conclusion, the lesson objectives set for this class have been achieved according to the students’ performance in class. They have known the structure of the essay although they made wrong predictions about the main idea of the last paragraph at the beginning. However, it was their wrong prediction that stimulated their later learning and at last summarized a correct one when they finished reading the last paragraph. In addition, their discussion about the attitude they should have towards the cultural relics is impressive and the ideas put forward are so impressive and worth praise. This is the first period of the Extended Reading part so the focus is to have students get the main information of the Qingming Scroll. That is why there is not enough time for students to learn more about the language points and further enjoy the scroll together. The next period will provide students with an opportunity to talk more about the essay and the scroll.
