Teaching theories the New English Curriculum Standards(2020)
What: The topic of this unit is Scientists who changed the world, belonging to the theme Human and Society, categorized into the theme group --- scientists, scientific discoveries, scientific spirit. The reading text of this unit is a news report about 2015 Nobel Prize winner Tu Youyou and her great efforts in the process of discovering Qinghaosu.
Analysis of the teaching material How: Since the passage is a news report, students will be guided to figure out the features of each part as well as to define the structure of it, thus getting the main idea of the news report.
Why: It aims to raise students’ awareness of the value of TCM and to encourage students to learn the precious qualities and spirit from this admirable scientist.

Analysis of the students This class is intended for Senior One students. After learning English for some time in high school, students already have a good command of basic reading strategies like skimming and scanning to get the main idea or more detailed information. But students in the class are not at the same level. As teachers, we can provide a scaffold to help students improve themselves and go further to a higher level, or we can say the ZDP - the zone of proximal development so that learners can achieve more with guidance.
Teaching objectives According to the Core Competences, by the end of the class, students are supposed to: figure out the structure of a news report; summarize the factual information in the text; extract the general idea of each part; get involved and cooperate with partners to express their attitudes; host a forum with the target language; develop their logical and critical thinking; Enhance their national pride and sense of mission.
Teaching emphases: To help students grasp the features of news reports; Raise students’ awareness of the value of TCM; Encourage them to learn the precious qualities and spirit from Tu Youyou.
Teaching difficulties: How to encourage ss’ deep thinking; How to cultivate ss’ language ability; How to develop their learning capability.

Before class Watch a video of The China(Wuhu) Popularized Science Products Exposition. 1.To arouse interest in the topic.
Step 1 Lead-in(3 mins) Play a guessing game. Ask ss whether they know the three Chinese who have won the Nobel Prize. Predict from the headline and the pictures to guess which of the three scientists this text is about. 1. To activate their acquired knowledge for further study; 2.To prepare for the new lesson.

Read paras. 3-5 to learn about the process of Tu and her team discovering
Qinghaosu and watch a video afterwards.

Step 5 Homework To nominate a Chinese for a Nobel Prize. Three candidates are shown as examples: Xi Jinping for peace, Zhong Nanshan for medicine and Yu Hua for literature. Students can also come up with other people qualified for this award.
