I. Learning objectives

understand the story by getting the plot and some detailed information;
2. know some basic information about O. Henry and appreciate the surprising ending;
3. think creatively and come up with their own ending of the story;
4. have a better understanding of honesty and responsibility.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Warming up
T asks Ss to brainstorm some important moral values.
Courage, responsibility, loyalty, gratitude, honesty, perseverance, compassion…
T asks Ss to read the list below and have a self-check.
tell the truth and say what you really think;
play by the rules and do not try to take unfair advantage of others;
keep promises and do not make promises you cannot keep;
are prepared to admit mistake;
take agreements seriously;
correct mistakes rather than blaming others;
think about how your actions will affect others;
do everything to the best of your ability.

Step 2 Introducing the author
1. T asks Ss to answer the following questions:
(1) Who wrote the short story
O. Henry
(2) What do you know about him
O.Henry is a world-famous American short story writer, whose works include The last leaf, The gift of the Magi, The Cop and the Anthem, etc. In his stories, he often focused on the everyday life of ordinary people in New York City at that time. His stories are best known for their surprise endings.

Step 3 Understanding the story
T asks Ss to find the setting and characters by reading quickly.
Setting: On a dark night & outside a shop, New York
Characters: Jimmy, Bob & a plain clothes man
T guides Ss to figure out the plot of the story and complete the diagram in A1.
Introduction:
Jimmy went to see his friend Bob at an agreed location.
Rising action:
Bob noticed that Jimmy was different.
Climax:
Bob realized that the man was not his best friend, Jimmy Wells.
Falling action:
The man arrested Bob.
Resolution:
(4) Bob received a note from Jimmy Wells that explained his actions.
T asks Ss to answer the questions in A2 to get some specific information.
Why did Bob stand in the doorway of a store to wait for his friend
The store used to be “Big Joe” Brady’s restaurant, where the two men had agreed to meet.
Why had Bob left New York twenty years before
Bob had wanted to head for the West to make his fortune.
What time did the man in the long overcoat meet Bob
Around 10:20 p.m
How did Bob realize that the man in the long overcoat was not Jimmy
Bob realized this when he saw the man’s face in the bright light of the drugstore.
When did Jimmy know Bob was the criminal wanted in Chicago
When Bob struck the match to light his cigar.
T asks Ss to retell the story according to A1 and A2.

Step 4 Appreciate the ending
T guides Ss to appreciate the ending of this short story.

T：The ending is surprising but also reasonable. Read the story again and find some details foreshadow the ending.
(1) The light showed a pale face, with keen eyes, a square jaw and a little white scar near his right eyebrow. His scarfpin was a large diamond, oddly set.
(2)The waiting man pulled out a handsome watch, set with small diamonds.
(3)About twenty minutes later, a tall man in a long overcoat, with collar turned up to his ears, hurried toward him.
(4)“It has given me everything I asked it for. You’ve changed lots, Jimmy. I never thought you were tall by two or three inches.”
【设计意图：在阅读故事之前教师特意强调了欧·亨利的短篇故事以意料之外而又情理之中的结尾著称。读完故事之后，教师引导学生细品故事的结尾，并找出前文的伏笔，提高学生的文学鉴赏能力同时也训练逻辑思维能力。】
Step 5 Discussing for better understanding
T asks Ss to discuss the following questions in groups.

Do you think that Jimmy did the right thing Why or why not
What do you think is the message of this short story

Step 6 Summarizing
T guides Ss to summarize what they have learned in this period and appreciate the following sentence.
To live a life of honesty and integrity is a responsibility of every decent person.

V. Homework
Choose either of the two tasks.
1. Write your own ending for the short story.
2. Supposing the story did not end here, what would happen next Write a continuation for the story.
