Bob was free after twenty years’ prison, and he walked in the street, lost and helpless…
It was a cold winter night, Bob felt like a stranger to the city and everyone in it . he didn’t know
where to go or whom to go to . A year after he had been arrested , his wife had left him and former good friends had cut all contact with him. “Is there anyone here who still thinks of me ” he wondered bitterly. he wandered blindly through the streets. In the dim light of a streetlamp, he Suddenly heard a familiar voice, “Bob I am here for our meeting, I knew you are sure to come to the same place where we had met twenty years before. ” Although twenty years had passed, Bob could still recognize the face---Jimm’s face. “ Long time no see,” murmured Bob , his voice trembling. At that moment the uncertainty was gone.

Step 4 Language application
The short story contains many detailed descriptions about Bob. Find these details in the
story and try to describe a person using detailed.
Detailed descriptions help build up a picture of the person being described.
1.Sentences with detailed descriptions about Bob to indicate his life in the West :
In the doorway of a store stood a man, with an unlit cigar in his mouth.
The light showed a pale face, with keen eyes, a square jaw and a little white
scar near his right eyebrow.
His scarfpin was a large diamond, oddly set.
The man from the West stopped suddenly and released his arm.…
The waiting man pulled out a handsome watch, set with small diamonds.
2.Sentences with detailed descriptions about the policeman
The policeman on the beat walked along the street as he always did.
About twenty minutes later, a tall man in a long overcoat, with collar turned up to his ears, hurried toward him.
3. Other sentences with detailed descriptions
The two men walked up the street, arm in arm.
Each of them turned to stare at the other’s face. The man from the West stopped suddenly and released his arm.
3.Be a careful observer first and then try to write down what you have observed to give a
detailed and vivid description.
(Sample answer)
Every morning when I go to the school bus stop, I see my neighbour Jane, who is tall
and lean. As she races by, she always waves to me and smiles widely showing her
bright white teeth. Her long brown hair is tied up in a ponytail. It swings from side to
side as she takes big running strides. Whether the day is sunny or rainy, Jane goes for
a run. Her athletic build and fast pace always impress me.
