(Purpose: To lead in the topic and activate Ss’ interest through their personal experience.)Step2 Pre-writing (17 minutes)Activity1 : Read for Character & SettingStudents are asked to fill the table according to preview and the picture provided.Character Who Mary and her parentsSetting When On a rainy dayWhere In the living roomActivity2 : Read for storyline and emotion line.Teacher invites four students to read the passage and sort out the storyline and emotion line based on the pictures and key sentences provided.(Possible answers: Mary and her parents were caught at home by a flood.(nervous) => Her parents were preparing for the approaching flood.(Packing, listening, moving the table) => Mom waved Mary to sit on the sofa and dad walked to the sofa and hugged his wife and daughter. (worried) => What’s next )(Purpose: To help Ss get key elements of the passage and to smooth Ss’ understanding of the article)Activity 3: Read for the theme and endTeacher asks students to read the given sentences in great detail and discuss what might happen in the next story.Discuss in pairs: What’s your end How about the theme (Possible answer:They are saved. great family love, others’ selfless efforts, personal growth...)(Purpose: To guide Ss to design a positive end and theme, and get prepared for the writing.)Activity:4 Design the plot: Ask questions based on the sentences given.Para.1: After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad made a decision .Q1: What's their decision Stay or Leave Why Q2: How can they protect themselves Q3: What were they doing then How did they feel Para.2: Finally , the rain stopped.Q4: How did they feel when the rain finally stopped Q5: Will any new characters appear to rescue them Yes or No How were they saved Sentence:Theme (End)(Purpose: To guide Ss to design the plot reasonably by asking questions, and get prepared for the writing.)Step3 While-writing (12 minutes)Activity: Write for the next plot through group discussion.Teacher divides students into 6 group,and each member has their task: All the students discuss the plot. One student is responsible for looking up the dictionary; one for recording the content; several for presentation.(Purpose: To activate most of students to take part in the discussion.)
