My busiest period comes from November each year, when I will receive a number of emails and texts from friends who want to volunteer with their families on Thanksgiving as a way to give back. I also field phone calls from organizations who want to donate to local programs that provide Thanksgiving meals.
As an official who still works in the nonprofit sector, however, I also feel deeply anxious because I
know the other 51 weeks of the year, these critical programs that provide food access to residents in need are starving for both volunteers and donations. Hunger is a year round problem, and each week volunteers are the necessary part to ensure that programs are able to serve the community.
At Food For Free, we rely on about 100 volunteers per week, and each of those volunteers is
extremely important to providing fresh, healthy food to people in the Greater Boston area who need it. School children who take backpacks of food home on Fridays, community college students who rely on our Family Meals program to get stronger in class, elderly and disabled residents who receive twice monthly deliveries of food to their doors through our Home Delivery program, they all rely on us ensuring enough volunteers show up to do the work.
These volunteers don抰 show up in your social media feeds, they don抰 win awards and no one
writes about them in the local newspapers. But they are heroes. And you can be too.
If everyone made a promise to volunteer once a month, or even once a quarter, I know that we could reduce some of the anxiety these organizations feel, as a more reliable volunteer network allows them to focus on helping people, not filling volunteer slots.
You can look through our list of a few organizations who are doing critical work in Cambridge to
address food insecurity. Offer your time to an organization, they will be deeply grateful梐nd I am going to bet that you will feel pretty good about yourself too.
24. Why did so many organizations call the author
A.To ask something related emails. B. To offer donations to poor locals.
C. To broadcast programs for him. D. To order some food for their works.
25. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.the need for fresh food B.the duty of Food For Free
C.the value of voluntary work D.the difficult life of local people
26. What should we learn from the volunteers
A. Showing up in social media. B. Winning some useful awards.
C. Spreading our life stories. D. Serving the poor for nothing.
27.What is the author抯 aim to write the passage
A. To call readers to be volunteers. B.To express thanks for the organizations.
C. To advertise the official programs. D.To introduce websites of a local charity.

It's rare that you see the words "shyness" and "leader" in the same sentence. After all, the common opinion is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent net-workers and that those shy people are not.
A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of managers who believed shyness to be
高二英语试题 第4页 (共10页)
a barrier to leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shy梩hey're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies".
Shy people take a cautious approach to chance. They listen attentively to what others say and
absorb it before they speak. They're listening so they can learn what to say. Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地) motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard.
Being shy can also bring other benefits. Remember being in school and hearing the same kids
contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in Then what happened Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence: they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image.
Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers(引人注目的人) aren't modest,
but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to recognize mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations.
Since shy people have a lower desire for outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more
comfortable working with little information and sticking to their inner desires. Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent. Albert Einstein once said, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's that I stay with problems longer." Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person.
28. What is the traditional belief to the shy people
A.They are good at making friends. B.They are not popular with people.
C.They like making speeches in public. D.They are unlikely to become leaders.
29. What does the underlined words refer to
A.Shy people. B. Public speakers. C. Net-workers. D. Survey conductor.
30. What makes shy people succeed more easily according to the author
A.They focus on achieving themselves outside rewards.
B.They make the best of the power of presence actively.
C.They realize their abilities and imperfections clearly.
D.They perform more confidently than outgoing people.
31. How does the author support his ideas
A. By making contrasts and giving examples.
B. By quoting authorities and making evaluations.
C. By explaining problems and providing solutions.
D. By giving definitions and presenting research results.

For more than one hundred years, a great number of scientists have believed that tiredness in athletes originates in the muscles(肌肉). Precise explanations have varied, but all have been based on the 揕imitations Theory . In other words, muscles tire because they hit a physical limit—they either run out of fuel or oxygen or they drown in harmful by-products(副产品).
高二英语试题 第5页 (共10页)
In the past few years, however, Timothy Noakes from the University of Cape Town, South Africa,
has examined this standard theory. Tiredness, he argues, is caused not by signals springing from overtaxed muscles, but is an emotional response which begins in the brain. The fundamental nature of his new theory is that the brain paces the muscles to keep them well back from the edge of tiredness. When the brain decides it抯 time to quit, it creates unbearable muscle tiredness. This 揅entral Governor theory remains controversial, but it does explain many puzzling aspects of athletic performance.
A recent discovery that Noakes calls the 搇actic acid paradox made him start researching this area
seriously. Lactic acid is a by-product of exercise, and the increase of it is often mentioned as a cause of tiredness. But when research subjects exercise in certain conditions created artificially, they become
tired even though lactic acid levels remain low. Nor has the oxygen content of their blood fallen too low
for them to keep going. Obviously, something else was making them tire before they hit either of these physiological limits.
Noakes conducted an experiment with seven cyclists. It has long been known that during exercise,
the body never uses 100% of the available muscle fibres(纤维). The amount used varies, but in some tasks such as this cycling test the body calls on about 30%. His team found that as tiredness set in, the electrical activity in cyclist抯 legs declined梕ven when they were making a great effort to cycle as fast as they could.
To Noakes, this was strong evidence that the old theory was wrong. 揟he cyclists may have felt
completely exhausted, he says, 揵ut their bodies actually had considerable reserves that they could theoretically tap by using a greater amount of the resting fibres. This, he believes, is the proof that the brain is regulating the pace of the workout to hold the cyclists well back from the point of extreme tiredness.
32. Why do athletes feel tired according to 揕imitations Theory
A.Because the muscles run out all energy. B.Because the brain protects the muscles.
33. C. Because the scientists performed researches. D. Because Noakes examined standard theory.
34. What has Noakes has found out
A.Muscle fibres control athletes movements.
B.Lactic acid levels remain high in cycling tests.
C.Mental processes control the symptoms of tiredness
D.Different exercises use different amount of muscle fibres
35. What does 搇actic acid paradox have in common with Noakes
A.The energy in human bodies can be balanced
B.Tiredness is a harmful by-product of exercise.
C.Lactic acid will not caused tiredness necessarily.
D.The oxygen content will rise after taking exercise.
36. Which is the most suitable title of the text
A.Muscles or Brains -Which brings athletes tiredness
B.Lactic acid or Oxygen content-Which is vital for athletes
C.Working out or Being relaxed-Which will better our health
D.Common belief or New discovery-Which should we believe

Visit the grocery store on an empty stomach, and you will probably come home with a few things
you did not plan to buy. 36 . The location of store displays (摆放) also influences our shopping
choices. And it may make or break some healthy eating habits.
The checkout area is a particular hotspot for junk food. Studies have found that the products most commonly found there are sugary and salty snacks. And a few studies have suggested that simply swapping in healthier options can change customer behavior. A 2012 study in the Netherlands found that
hospital workers were more likely to give up junk food for healthy snacks. 37 . In 2014 Norwegian
and Icelandic researchers also found that replacing unhealthy foods with healthy ones in the checkout area significantly increased last-minute sales of healthier foods.
38 It has been working with more than 1,000 store owners to encourage them to order and
promote nutritious foods. 揥e know that the stores are full of cues (暗示) meant to encourage consumption, says Tamar Adjoian, a research scientist at the department, 揗aking healthy foods more convenient or appealing can lead to increased sales of those products.”
Adjoian and her colleagues wondered if such findings would apply to their city抯 crowded urban
checkout areas, so they selected three Bronx supermarkets for their own study. 39 Then they
recorded purchases over six three-hour periods in each store for two weeks.
Of the more than 2,100 shoppers they observed, just 4 percent bought anything from the checkout area. Among those who did, however, customers in the healthy lines purchased nutritious foods more
than twice as often as those in the standard lines. 40 The findings were reported in September in
the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
The potential influence may seem small, but Adjoian believes that changing more checkout lines
would open customers eyes to nutritious, lower-calorie foods. Health department officials are now exploring ways to expand healthy options at checkout counters throughout New York City.
A.These foods give people more energy.
B.They bought unhealthy foods 40 percent less often.
C.But hunger is not the only cause of additional purchases.
D.The supermarkets began to offer nutritious, lower-calorie foods.
E.It happened when the latter were more readily available on canteen shelves.
F.These findings caught the attention of New York City Department of Health.
G.They replaced candies and cookies with fruits and nuts near the checkout counter.

第一节 (满分15分)
Good morning, everyone.
Today, I’m honored to stand here and talk about the topic of“Green Living”. Green living means living in a way that is environmentally friendly and sustainable. It means reducing our carbon footprint, conserving resources, and minimizing pollution. It also means making conscious decisions about the products we buy and the lifestyle we lead.
Now, let抯 talk about how we can contribute to green living. First of all, we should reduce our
energy consumption by turning off lights and appliances when not in use. Secondly, we should use eco-friendly products such as reusable bags and water bottles. Finally, we should spread awareness about green living by talking to our friends and family about it. Let抯 do our part to make the world a better place!
That抯 all. Thank you.
第二节(满分25分)
Then I noticed Maiga standing at the edge of the group, watching. Tears poured from his eyes and
his mouth was parted in a silent cry. I rushed to him and he sobbed into my chest. “They’ll come. It’ s just the first day!” I hugged him and he melted against me. It must have been months since someone had held him this tight. I let him hold on until he was ready to let go. In the following days, Maiga was usually quiet and withdrawn. Sometimes, though, he was animated, almost happy, and he talked about his family, his village and his school.
Two weeks later, an aid worker came with a man who looked just like Maiga. “Maiga!” I could barely whisper the name. Maiga was busy writing names.“Maiga!”The familiar sound made him look
up. His mouth dropped open and his pen slipped out. He squeaked as he stood up and threw himself into
his father’s open arms. I watched with tears all over my cheeks. Maiga then smiled at me and said
eagerly,“You will miss me!”I nodded, trying to stop my sobs.“I’ll definitely miss you!”he shouted.
I wanted to take a photo of his smile, but no film could have captured the happiness I saw on his face.
