I.The Analysis of Teaching Material
In this unit, students mainly learn to talk about their favorite festivals and festival activities and give a personal reaction with objective clauses with that, if and whether and exclamatory statements.
II. The Analysis of the Students
As students of Grade Nine, most of they have a good command of four skills and find it easy and fun to learn English. What’s more, they are familiar with the topic of this unit--- traditional Chinese festivals. However, they know little about the western festivals such as the Easter, Halloween, Christmas Day and so on. The contradiction between the communication needs and the lack of the students' knowledge reserve constitutes the learning needs of this course.
III. Teaching Aims
1. Knowledge Objects
(1) Function: Talk about the festival and give a personal reaction.
(2) Key Vocabulary: Christmas, lie, novel, eve, dead, business, spider, punish, warn, present, warmth, spread, end up
(3) Target Language
a) But behind all these things lies the true meaning of Christmas: the importance of sharing and giving love and joy to people around us.
b) He is mean and only thinks about himself.
c) He just cares about whether he can make more money and he hates Christmas.
d) He warns Scrooge to change his ways if he doesn’t want to end up like him.
e) Scrooge sees that he is dead, but nobody cares.
(4) Structure: To talk about the festivals by using the objective clauses.
2. Ability Objects
(1) Enable students to understand the main idea of the passage by inferring and learn to tell the story of Christmas.
(2) Know about the spirit of Christmas and share and develop their reading and writing skills.
3. Moral Objects
Understand the true spirit of Christmas and share and give love and joy to people around us.
IV. Teaching Key Points
(1) Learn and master some phrases and key sentences.
(2) Enable students to understand the main idea of the passage by inferring.

Learn how to find the main idea of the passage by inferring and develop students’ different reading skills.

StepI Leading-in
1) Talk about the Mid-Autumn festival that we just have had and have students to talk about what they like most about this festival.
eg: I love enjoying delicious mooncakes.
I love admiring the full moon.
I love getting together with my family
…..
2) Listen to the English song When Christmas Come to Town together. Then have them answer questions:
a) What festival is the song about
b) What do you know about this festival
Step II Groupwork
Present some questions and have students discuss in groups, and then create a mind map about Christmas.(Show some pictures about Christmas to help them while answering).
a).When is Christmas (It’s on December 25th.)
b).What activities do people have at Christmas (They have Christmas party, put up Christmas trees, give presents and many other celebrations.)
c).Do you know what the symbols of Christmas are (Christmas trees, Santa Claus,….)
d).Do you know any story about Christmas (A Christmas Carol…)
Step III Pre-reading
T: Through discussions, we have known something about Christmas. Today we’ll read a story about Christmas.
Present the new words and ask students to read the passage quickly and guess their meanings. Teach the new words and ask students to repeat, and then do some explanations.
Step IV While-reading
1) Have students listen to the passage carefully, then read the passage quickly and look for the key phrases and sentences as they read, and say what the story tells us. Answer the following two questions:
a) What does the passage talk about (The spirit of Christmas)
b) How does it tell us (By telling a story)
2) Have students read Para 1 and answer the two questions
What are the most common things that people think of for Christmas
What is the true meaning of spirit of Christmas (Topic sentence)
3) Have all the boys read Para2 together, at the same time, fill the blanks.

After learning the Spirit of Christmas, we know the true meaning of Christmas besides gifts, trees and Santa Claus… Actually, behind the Mid-Autumn Festival also lies the spirit---reunion.
Step V After-reading (role-play)
Before this class, I have asked all the students to preview the textbook and make up their own group to perform A Christmas Carol. Now ask the students who have prepared well to role-play Scrooge, Jacob Marley, the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come with their masks.
While the students are performing ,the teacher plays some pictures related to the performances. At last, the student who plays Scrooge gives out candies to all the students ,enjoying sharing the love , kindness ,joy and warmth. At the same time, the teacher plays a Christmas song called Jingle Bells to help students have a better understanding of the true meaning of Christmas.
Step VI Summary
T: In this class, we’ve learned a passage about Christmas. It tells us the true meaning of Christmas –sharing and giving love and joy to people around us. In fact, like any other traditional Chinese festival, we should care more about the love, joy, kindness and warmth behind the festivals than the gifts.
