Crazy-Creative Traditions in Schools
2
Here are a few schools’ crazy-creative traditions that will probably have you wish to go there
so you could celebrate in all the graduation fun. Learn about them all in the below.
Attire (服装) and Flowers at College of Charleston
You fashionista will love this one. During December ceremony, women wear black dresses
and men wear black tuxedos (燕尾服). During May ceremony, women wear white dresses and
men wear summer tuxedos. It’s also been a tradition since the 1930s to carry flowers onto the
stage: women carry bouquets of six red roses in a red bow and men wear a single red rose
boutonniere (扣眼). So classy!
Hoop Rolling at Wellesley College
This all-women’s college tradition was originally held on May day, but it’s now held in April.
The purpose was to allow students to essentially leave all their worries behind and just participate
in some interesting games outdoors. Back in the day, it was said that the winner of the hoop
rolling race was the first to be married, and in the 1980s she would be the first to be CEO.
Nowadays, the winner would be the first to achieve her own happiness…that is, after being
thrown into Lake Waban by all her classmates.
Fabric and Green Grad Recycling Program at University of New Hampshire
You’ll absolutely love this tradition. UNH’s vendor provides wrinkle-resistant caps and
gowns made of recycled plastic bottles. Graduates then have the opportunity to donate their gowns
to be cleaned and reused. Graduates are still able to keep their caps and tassels as keepsakes, all
while helping to save the environment. The tradition has become a trend for many universities to
follow, such as Husson University and Wake Forest University.
21.Which can you choose if you want to experience an amazing show
A.Wellesley College.
B.College of Charleston.
D.Husson University.
C.The University of New Hampshire.
22.What does Hoop Rolling at Wellesley College aim at enabling the students to do
A.Be CEO.
B.Have fun.
C.Achieve happiness.
D.Be married.
23.Why are UNH’s caps and gowns made of recycled plastic bottles
A.To collect plastic bottles.
B.To promote the tradition.
C.To clean and reuse the bottles.
D.To protect the environment.

I am a part of the Windward Robotics team known as the Omnicats, one of the many clubs
offered at my school. My eight teammates and I started out by watching the robotics qualifiers (资
格赛) and finals of Chinese teams. We used these robotics videos for inspiration and drew up
mind maps of what our team wanted to do.
We met every day for two hours after school in order to build our robots. Typically, adults
oversee what students are building, but my school lets teens take control. It leaves room for more
errors, but we’re prouder of our final product.
Before our first real match, a practice one was offered at the actual site. My sub-team had
been further along than other teams but quickly fell behind. When that big day arrived, I
immediately felt my teammates’ nervousness. Our first match was in three minutes. All of us
glanced around at each other. It seemed that tons of tasks were waiting for us to handle. Our robot
was still sitting in a box. Two of our teammates rushed to take the robot for an official
examination as the rest of us discussed our strategy.
3
Our team captain explained that we all should try driving the robot now, while it was early in
the season. She gave me the remote. I had only driven for a limited amount of time in practice so I
was extremely nervous. Our autonomous code (自动代码) began to run almost immediately after
our short discussion. Despite all the drama, we ended up winning the match. Not too bad for the
first match! I was so proud. I did not enjoy the pressure of driving but liked building the robot
behind the scenes instead.
We have transferred to a different type of robotics at the end of the season, which involves
the whole team designing one giant robot with large tools. I am a part of the electrical team now,
so I make sure the motherboard (母板) can supply the robot’s energy needs. We have all enjoyed
the rest of the season and learned that robotics is never dull!
24.What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 mean
A.check
B.revise
C.preview
D.request
25.Why did the teammates feel so nervous before their first match
A.Because they didn’t prepare for it at all.
B.Because it was really too difficult for them.
C.Because they didn’t make full preparations before the match.
D.Because they didn’t know what the match would be like.
26.What did the author think of their first robotics match
A.It was tiring but exciting.
B.It was stressful but wonderful.
C.It was terrible but delightful.
D.It was boring but rewarding.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.Robotics Is Never Dull
B.Teamwork for Robots
C.A Person Who Loves Robots
D.My First Robotics Match

When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents(口音), most of them proudly
replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind of misses the point.
More often than not, what we mean when we say someone “has an accent” is that their accent
is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this
definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the
language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we
produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some
sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version
of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance,
“You got eat or not ” (meaning “Have you eaten ”) is an acceptable and understood question in
Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English
speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”.
The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English
speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects — for the benefit of
4
everyone.
Language differences like these provide deep understandings into people’s cultural
experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is definitely a part of one’s
identity(身份). Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d
learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
28.What does the author think of his/her friends’ response in paragraph 1
A.It reflects their self confidence.
B.It reflects their language levels.
C.It misses the point of communication.
D.It misses the real meaning of accents.
29.Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English
A.To support the use of dialects.
B.To show the diversity of dialects.
C.To correct a grammatical mistake.
D.To highlight a traditional approach.
30.What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph
A.Learn to speak with your local dialect.
B.Seek for an official definition of accents.
C.Appreciate the value of accents and dialects.
D.Distinguish our local languages from others’.
31.What can be a suitable title for this passage
A.Everyone You Know Has an Accent
B.Accents Weaken Our Uniqueness
C.Dialects Lead to Misunderstanding
D.Standard English Is at Risk

British chip maker Walkers is being flooded with mail deliveries of its own packaging. An
online petition (请愿) with more than 312,000 signatures so far encourages those who signed to
mail their empty chip plastic bags to Walkers as an act of protest against the bags’ non-recyclable
design.
As petition organizer Geraint Ashcroft explained, the majority of chip packets, made from
plastic coated with metal, are not recyclable and have been found fully undamaged up to 33 years
after consumption. The UK alone consumes 6 billion bags of chips a year, and Walkers turns out
11 million bags daily. Ashcroft wrote, “At today’s consumption rate in 33 years’ time, there will
be 200 billion packets either sent to landfill or polluting our oceans. Many will be eaten by fish or
birds, leading to a slow death.”
Mailing the bags to Walkers is a way to hold the company accountable for its packaging and
to pressure it to come up with a better design. But it is controversial. Because the Royal Mail
postal service isn’t happy about the sudden inflow of packages, asking people calm down to help
with ease of delivery. Critics on Twitter also question the logic of buying a product in order to
protest against its producer and suggest that giving up chips altogether would improve one’s
health as well as the environment.
Walkers issued a statement on Wednesday, saying it will make its packaging plastic-free by
2025. “We have received some returned packets and recognized the efforts being made to bring
5
the issue of packaging waste to our attention. The returned packets will be used in our research as
we work towards our commitment of improving the recyclability of our packaging.”
32.Why do people mail their empty chip bags to Walkers
A.To make Walkers use them once more.
B.To exchange them for some new chips.
C.To oppose Walkers’ plastic packaging.
D.To appeal to people for not using the bags.
33.What does the second paragraph mainly show
A.The potential harm of chip bags.
B.The cause of animals’ death.
C.The production of plastic bags.
D.The opinion of Geraint Ashcroft.
34.What is the underlined word “accountable” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Explainable.
35.How does Walkers react to the campaign
A.Doubtfully. B.Indifferently.
第二节(共 5小题,每小题 2.5分,满分 12. 5分)

When communicating with others, we often focused on what we should say.
36
Listening well means not just understanding the words or the information being exchanged, but
also understanding the emotions the speaker is trying to express. Here are some tips to help you
become an engaged (专注的)listener.
37
. You can’t listen in an engaged way if you’re checking your phone from time to
time or thinking about something else. You need to stay focused in order to pick up the differences
hard to notice and important non-verbal implications (暗示) in a conversation. If you find it hard
to concentrate on some speakers, try repeating their words over in your head—it’ll strengthen their
message and help you stay focused.
Avoid interrupting or trying to change the conversation to your concerns. By saying
something like, “If you think that’s bad, let me tell you what happened to me.” You
can’t concentrate on what someone’s saying if you’re forming what you’re going to say next.
In order to communicate effectively with someone, you don’t have to like them or
38
39
agree with their ideas, values, or opinions. However, you do need to set aside your judgment and
take away blame and criticism in order to fully understand them. The most difficult
communication, when successfully conducted, can often lead to an unlikely connection with
someone.
Provide feedback. If there seems to be a disconnection, reflect what has been said. “What I’m
hearing is,” and “Sounds like you are saying,” are great ways to reflect back. Don’t simply repeat
what the speaker has said word by word, though— you’ll sound dishonest or ignorant.
40
Ask questions to make certain points clear: “What do you mean when you say...” or “Is this what
you mean ”
A. Try to set aside judgment.
B. Focus fully on the speaker.
C. Speak frankly about your former boss.
D. Instead, express what the speaker’s words mean to you.
6
E. Listening is not the same as waiting for your turn to talk.
F. Show respect to the speaker and put your phone away in your pocket.
G. However, effective communication is less about talking and more about listening.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with many physical issues affecting her tiny body.
Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. Though no one expected her to survive,
she did make it. But she had a strange figure that everyone could recognize, even from a distance.
8
In Emily’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school hall at Christmas.
It had been performed for so many years that it had become one of the most important events for
many of the townsfolk. Each year, many people tried out for the show, but most were turned down.
Only the best performers could be included.
Emily had a most beautiful singing voice. Last year, she asked Mrs. Owens, her music
teacher, if she could join in the performance. Mrs. Owens took a look at her body and said, “Child,
you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would
make them uncomfortable too.”
Without singing a single note, Mrs. Owens sent Emily back through the door of the choral
room (合唱室) . Hurt and upset, Emily decided never to try out again. But things changed as the
following school year, Mrs. Owens retired and a new music teacher arrived—Mr. Butler.
He had heard about Emily and suggested that she give it a try again. Emily didn’t want to be
rejected again, so she hesitated about it. But finally her love for singing and strong desire to join in
the performance outweighed her hesitation. She tried out again and learnt the result would be
posted the next day on the door of the choral room.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night, having turned in bed back and forth thousand times as she
was worried that she would be rejected again and would never fit in.

作文:
Hi Coward,
I’m sorry to know that you have trouble adapting yourself to senior high school. However, the situation is easy to change if you take my suggestions into consideration.
First of all, why not communicate with your teacher face to face By doing this, your teacher will know your inner thoughts and help you solve this problem. What’s more, if I were you, I would be engaged in various kinds of activities held by class actively. More importantly, it would be a good idea if you made some friends with common interests. If you do this, you can share happiness and sadness with them and help you get to know them to get rid of loneliness at high school.
I hope you will find these ideas useful, and fit in well with your new school.
The next day, Emily hurried to school and anxiously glanced at the list of the result. To her great surprise, she was not rejected this time. Her name stood proudly at the top of the list. It was she, Emily White, who was chosen to be the lead singer! Emily couldn’t believe her eyes. Just then, she felt a gentle pat on the shoulder. Mr. Butler said to her with determined eyes, “Emily, I chose you to lead because of your extraordinary voice. Just believe in yourself.” Greatly moved and encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.
Finally, the day of the performance came. Standing in the front, Emily felt her throat tight and palms sweating. When the curtain rose, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon her. “Emily White!” Someone whispered. With Mr. Butler’s encouraging words in mind, she began to sing her heart out—her voice travelled in the hall like a nightingale’s singing. Everyone was shocked by her great talent and offered big rounds of applause. She was shining on stage—she knew now she was known to everyone not for her appearance, but for her voice as an angel’s.
