The Chinese Writing System---Connecting the Past and the Present
教学目标 Language abilities: Obtain and sort out the factual information about the history of Chinese characters in the article; Use the words and expressions they’ve learned from the passage to retell the development of Chinese writing system and explain why Chines characters play an important part in the succession of Chinese civilization. Thinking abilities: Summarize and demonstrate the importance of Chinese characters and their connection. Cultural awareness: Enhance cultural confidence and national pride and make our culture better known to the world. Learning abilities: Based on activity-based learning approach, the students improve their reading ability, like skimming, scanning and their abilities of autonomous learning and cooperative learning.
教学重难点 Important points: Identify the structure of the text and understand the development of written Chinese; Enhance cultural confidence and national pride. Difficult points: Summarize and demonstrate the importance of Chinese characters and their connection.

环节 教学过程
引入 Show a picture of different forms of Hanzi, Jia and play a video of Chinese character to students to lead in the class with the following questions. Q1: What can you learn from the video Purposes: Activate students’ background information and arouse their interest for today’s lesson.
知识 讲解 与 组织教学 Prediction Look at the title and picture in the text and predict what the text will be about through matching the key words with the titles. The text is probably about the development of Chinese writing system. Purposes: Through the titles and pictures, predict the content of the text to arouse their interest for reading and checking how much of what they predicted is right. Skimming Read the passage quickly, find out the main idea of each paragraph. Para.1 Para.2 Para.3 Para.4 Para.5 Para.6 Purposes:Practice skimming to identify the main ideas of what the text is about quickly and the structure with timed task. Scanning for details Activity 1: Read the passage and find out the words and phrases that describe a time. The passage is organized in time order and the style of the text is an exposition. Activity2: Read each of those important times carefully and find what happened at each important time. Purposes: Practice scanning to locate specific information and follow the timeline to get a deep understanding of how Chinese writing system develops. Close reading and thinking Activity3: Ask students to read again and discuss the following questions: Do you think Chinese writing system important for China Find the sentences that show the importance of it from the text(Para4 - Para6). Supporting sentences: One: That writing system was of great importance in uniting the Chinese people and culture. Two: Written Chinese has also become an important means by which China’s present is connected with China’s past. Three: The high regard for the Chinese writing system can be seen in the development of Chinese characters as an art form, known as Chinese calligraphy, which has become an important part of Chinese culture. Four: The system of Chinese characters is still an important part of the Chinese culture.As China plays a greater role in global affairs, an increasing number of international students are beginning to appreciate China's culture and history through this amazing language. The students circle the key words in each supporting sentences and draw a conclusion what Chinese writing system connects: It connects____Chinese people_________with_____culture________. It connects_____the past________with_____the present________. It connects____art_________with______language_______. It connects_____China________with_____the world________. Purposes: With the help of the questions, students can deepen their understanding of the text and the importance of Chinese characters in Chinese culture, so that they can strengthen their national pride. Besides, students can think about the function of Chinese characters to identify the clue which is not evident. More importantly, they can voice their ideas in a logical way. Discussion Activity 4: Ask students to make a dialogue: Suppose that a group of students from Britain visit our school. They are interested in Chinese writing system. They are going to ask you a few questions. Words and expressions can be used: Purposes: Input to help the students to put the language they’ve learned from the text into practice and voice their opinions critically through group work. Also, they can strengthen their national pride.
小结 Ask students to finish the chart of assessment and also make a summary. China is wildly known for its ancient civilization, one of the most important factors of which is Chinese writing system. So we should remember that when we are connecting with the world, we should keep our root in our hearts and soul and make our civilization better known. Purposes: Assess what they’ve learned from the text and practice their ability of using what they have learnt from the text.

教学反思 To sum up, reading is not only a tool to improve students’ abilities to use language, but also a platform where students can discover the beauty of written Chinese while learning the language. During the process, following the clues of how Chinese writing system become and what written Chinese connect in the text, students’ ability of skimming, scanning the text for specific information, logical thinking, and critical thinking can be enhanced. As a result, they can be proud of China, and deepen their love for Chinese culture in their hearts and soul.
