Once upon a time, there lived a kind-hearted king. He loved birds and animals, and had a huge bird sanctuary(禁猎区)in his kingdom. He hated harming the animals and birds. He did not kill them for meat. One day, the king was sent two beautiful birds by a businessman. The king ordered the trainer to make them feel comfortable in their country.
One day, the king saw one bird fly very high, very quickly. However, the other bird just sat on the branch(树枝) and didn’t move even a step. The trainer said that he had tried everything he could but still failed to make the bird move. Later, the king decided to find someone in the country to make it move and fly.
A few weeks later, an old man reached the king’s palace and assured him that he would make the bird fly like the other one. The king asked the trainer to take the old man to train the bird. The next day, the king went to visit the old man. He was surprised to see the other bird fly like the first one to great height at rapid speed. The king was very happy and sent the old man quite a few gold coins and asked the old man what he had done to make the bird fly in a day.
The old man simply replied, “I just cut down the branch of the tree where the bird used to sit on. ”
Many of us are like this. We have wings to fly; we know how to fly, and where to fly. Still we sit doing nothing or doing something that makes us inferior(较差的)to others.

C. The king killed the two birds for meat in the end.

People use languages to communicate. Any language has its ways to express people’s minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms. An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say “I’m under the weather," they are saying that they’re not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, “There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers" tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.
Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand, if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.
Metaphor (比喻) is often used in idioms. Let’s read the following two examples:
● It makes my blood boil (煮沸) when people throw rubbish.
● The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside at dark night.
In neither situation above, our blood can reach the point so high or so low in temperature. Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to work out the unhappy feelings of really angry in the first example and very afraid in the second.
Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.
23. What does the text mainly tell us
A. Grammar. B. Writing. C. Culture. D. Idioms.
24. What can you say to your brother if he breaks your computer
A. I’m under the weather. B. I’m there in all weathers.
C. You’ve made my blood boil. D. My blood runs cold.
25. What is the writer’s advice when you come to an idiom
A. We should look it up in a good idiom dictionary.
B. We should try to express our minds with it.
C. We should find an interesting way to learn it.
D. We should create situations to guess its meaning.
26. Who may be most interested in the text above
A. A teacher who is teaching how to learn Chinese well.
B. A student who is learning English as a second language.
C. A mother who is learning how to take care of her child.
D. A reporter who is talking about the weather tomorrow.
D
①How is your memory Remembering things is an important function of our brain. If you think about it, there is so much we have to remember – from where we left our car keys to how we walk. However, do you often find you are forgetful
②Memory allows the brain to store(储存) and recall(回忆) information when needed. Our short-term memory can hold a small amount of information for a short time, while our long-term memory can hold a large amount of information for a long time. Our memory is amazing, but why do we still forget things
③It's possible we don't always store information in our memory easily, maybe because we are in a rush or we consider it not important at the time. When we do store information, we often make connections with other things, which helps us recall it later. If you don't have these connections, then it can be easier to forget.
④But sometimes even our short-term memory can let us down. Have you ever gone into a room to get something only to forget what you wanted when you got there This is called “The Doorway Effect”. Writing for the BBC Future website, scientist Tom Stafford explains that this happens because we change both the physical and mental(心理的) environments, moving to a different room and thinking about different things.
⑤Besides, if you have a mind like this, it could be because you have too much on your mind. But we do need to keep our memory good by continually using it, especially when our brains begin to become smaller and our memory starts to get worse after the age of 50.
⑥However, as Luis Villazon says, "Forgetting is not always a bad thing! It would be too tiring if we remembered everything of the world around us." There is always something worth remembering!
Why does the writer use two questions in Para.1
A. To ask for readers’ opinions. B. To give some useful advice.
C. To catch readers’ attention. D. To show some study findings.
What can we learn from the text
A. Long-term memory can hold a small amount of information for a long time.
B. Our memory can’t be recalled later by making connections with other things.
C. Short-term memory can sometimes be bad if we change our environments.
D. Our memory will become better and better after we reach the age of 50.
29. What is the overall tone(总基调) of the text
A. Creative and personal. B. Scientific and informative.
C. Sad and informative. D. Personal and cheerful.
30. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text
A. B. C. D.

A Better Way to Start Your Day
Whether you love mornings or not, they’re a fact of life. If you hate then, here are some ways to make them less terrible. If you’re a morning person, these tips can make mornings even better!
31 Be sure to get enough sleep. Most people need seven or eight hours of sleep to feel their best during the day. If you must get up at 5 or 6 a.m., go to bed early to get your eight hours. Turn off the TV, computer or smart phone and hit the hay. When you get enough sleep, you won’t feel sleepy. You can get out of bed on time. That will make your day better, too.
Turn on some music in the morning. Play any music you like. It doesn’t matter. 32 You’ll feel much happier as you start the day.
33 As your mother said, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Your body is out of fuel (燃料) by morning. You need some to help you control your blood-sugar.
Don’t watch TV or read a newspaper first in the morning. Your brain is fresh and ready to work on new things. Don’t fill it up with negative (消极的) information about the world and its problems. Instead, read something pleasant and cheerful. 34
Avoid answering QQ or WeChat first in the morning. Use that valuable morning time to get some exercise, eat breakfast and enjoy life. Check QQ or WeChat last before you leave your house. Then you’ll only have time to check the most important messages. 35
Every day is a new day—just enjoy it!
A. A good breakfast can make your day.
B. Your day will start better if you take time for the important things.
C. A good morning starts with a good sleep.
D. Just turn on something that makes you feel good.

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday and it began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest. People in the United States and Canada celebrate Thanksgiving on different days. It is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and around the same part of the year in other places. However, the way people celebrate Thanksgiving is quite similar. At first, people celebrated it for the harvest they got. As you may know, the most important part of Thanksgiving is the turkey dinner with the pumpkin pie. A lot of business goes on during this holiday. For example, many restaurants serve turkey dinners. Families and friends usually get together for a large meal at home or in the restaurant. After the meal, they always have a chat or play some traditional games. This is just like what Chinese people do on the festival that is celebrated on the fifteenth day of August of the lunar calendar. And students usually have 4 or 5 days off because of Thanksgiving. Of course, Thanksgiving is also a paid holiday for most workers.

Hi, everyone! I am happy here to share our experience in making a video of Sharing Chinese Traditional Festivals and introduce you something about the Mid-Autumn Festival.
To start with, I’d like to share how our group made the video. We first made a plan and divided the work. Some of the group members collected the information by searching online, while others created the video later by using cameras and computers. By working together, we managed to make an excellent video.
As you know, the festival we chose is the Mid-autumn Festival. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. On this day, not only do people admire the moon, but they also share mooncakes with families. People regard the day as a good time to stay with their friends and relatives. And they also think mooncakes carry their wishes to the families they love and miss. We all think it is a meaningful festival.
That’s all. Thanks for your listening.
