In March, recycling clothes earned the 17-year-old from Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah High School in Wisconsin, US, a finalist spot in the Young Entrepreneurs competition. The competition was hosted by Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, a non-profit organization. He won a scholarship of $10, 000 for his sustainable clothing brand The Mad Patcher.
In the beginning. Salzwedel just worked with clothes for fun. He learned his sewing skills at a young age from his grandmother. He then started to tear up his old jeans to try and create cool new designs. The fun hobby quickly turned into a business for Salzwedel when his friends and classmates started asking him to make customized clothing for them.
“So many people wanted them that I wasn’t going to make 150 pairs of pants for free, so that was when 1 had to start making a business out of it, ” Salzwedel told the Sheboygan Press.
In 2021, Salzwedel started his clothing brand. He uses colourful and patterned fabrics(布 料) from other clothes to create his patchwork(拼接) designs, like jeans, shirts and jackets. He only uses donated or recycled materials to ensure maximum sustainability.
Salzwedel has earned thousands of dollars through selling his clothes, and he donated 25 percent of his profits to non-profit organizations.
Talking about the competition, Salzwedel said, “It was exciting to do that and meet all sorts of young people with similar ideas. ” The teenager planned to use the prize to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. The college is one of the most famous fashion schools in the world. Meanwhile, he will continue doing his business even after he graduates. For Salzwedel, The Mad Patcher is a lifelong project worth working on.

This year, the students of University of Rochester (UR) can monitor occupancy rates in River Campus Libraries (RCL) spaces through the Waitz App, seeing which areas of the library have free space without having to physically visit it themselves.
“Waitz shows how busy each floor of the library is, so students can know before leaving their dorm,” Madi VanDeVelde, Manager of Waitz’s parent company, said. “Now, students never have to waste time pacing to looking for an open seat again.”
“The beauty of Waitz has really been in helping anyone who has walked into one of our popular spaces, only to discover that they can’t find a space,” Maurini Strub, Director of Performance & User Engagement of RCL, said. “Using the app, they can identify their best bets for an alternative space, and know before they go to the library where to find a spot.”
The company uses the Internet of Things to determine how many people are in a given space. They install sensors into the walls of RCL spaces that scan for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals. The signals are then converted into live occupancy data which are displayed in the monitors within RCL and on the mobile app. According to the company’s CEO Nic Halverson, the sensors have at least a 90% accuracy rate and do not collect any personally identifiable information.
Halverson launched the project in 2017 with his roommates in UC San Diego (UCSD) after being frustrated by the lack of open spaces at the university’s library. “I was walking up and down the eight floors of UCSD’s Geisel Library trying to find a seat to study one night only to see zero space available,” Halverson said. “I wish I knew how busy every floor was before I came! Science journalist Linda Geddes said, “If you don't get enough sleep, research suggests you are more likely to have unethical behavior, such as being mean, bullying your fellow employees or falsifying receipts. But it's not just owls: the larks tend to behave more unethically in the evening, and owls in the morning. So ideally, you want to introduce flexible working."
Employers would be wise to allow their employees to start whenever they feel ready — whether it's at the crack of dawn or at 11 a.m., and to allow breaks or pauses in the day as needed — because that would mean better productivity, performance, and behavior.
This shift is already happening, with the New York Times recently reporting that 27 percent of US employers now offer the flexibility to work outside normal business hours, up from 22 percent in 2014; and 68 percent allow telecommuting as needed (up from 54 percent in 2014). With the national unemployment rate at its lowest in 50 years, employers are having to become more competitive in what they offer workers, and flex-hours seem like a no-brainer, highly beneficial to all.
