The creation of the Oxford English Dictionary began in 1857, took seventy years to
complete, came from tens of thousands of excellent minds, and organized the sprawling
language into 414,825 precise definitions(精准的定义). But behind its creation is a fascinating
and mysterious story —— a story of two remarkable men whose strange twenty-year
relationship lies at the core of this historic undertaking.
Professor James Murray, an astonishingly learned former schoolmaster and bank clerk,
was the famous editor (编辑 ) of the OED project. Dr. William Chester Minor, an American
doctor from New Haven, Connecticut, who had served in the Civil War, was one of thousands
of contributors(供稿人) who contributed illustrative quotations(引文)of words to be used in the
dictionary. But Minor was not an ordinary contributor. He had sent thousands of neat,
handwritten quotations from his home in the small village of Crowthorne, fifty miles from
Oxford.
Murray invited Minor to visit Oxford and celebrate his work, but his offer was regularly
and mysteriously refused. Thus the two men, for two decades, kept a close relationship only

through mails. Finally, in 1896, after Minor had sent nearly ten thousand definitions to the

Challenge Memory Limits: AI Backs Up Words, Doubling Efficiency!
Do you often find yourself struggling to remember the new words you just learned Do

news is that scientists have recently come up with a new method to help you memorise words

For generations of Chinese college students, the college life starts with military training
(军训 ). Young people are not required to enlist for compulsory military service(服兵役 )in
China, but most of them have to go through military training before academic studies.
More than 2,000 colleges and 22,000 high schools have adopted the practice, with over 20
million students participating in training every year, CCTV reported.
Around 5.95 million college students from 2,898 universities and colleges will attend
military training this fall. And 84,000 officers and soldiers will be sent for the training tasks.
The practice is generally made up of both theoretical teaching and physical(身体上的 )
training. Students have to pass theory exam and the physical training usually lasts around two
weeks. During the physical training, students have to follow soldiers’ daily routine and go
through intensive formation training. Military songs and some fighting skills are also taught
during the course.
Though it has caused doubts and complaints, the training, which has been in practice for
decades, is still considered necessary by many educators in teaching students how to bear
hardship and lead a disciplined life.
“It’s really a hard time for us because we are princes and princesses at home,” said Liu
Junhua, a freshman from Xi’an Jiaotong University，“Now we need to be burnt in the sun. How
terrible! But it’s good for us. We’ll learn how to be strong, bear the hot sun and listen to the
order. In the future, no matter what difficulty I come across, I will never give up. ”
Hot topics about military training have come up online, including 10 to 20 people bunk-bed
room, stuffy green uniforms (制服), long exposure to sun, rough food, limited time and chance

While eating, Chase suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts with the
new year gifts they exchanged. This won’t be a New Year’s Day for Eva with no gifts. But as

After I pictured it over and over again, my high school’s Orientation Day finally arrived last
Monday! First of all, our headmaster, Mr. Meng, hosted the welcome ceremony, delivering a
speech which encouraged us to work hard and make the most of what our school provided. Then,
we freshmen were shown around the campus, with new teachers leading us to classrooms, labs,
dormitories and so on. We were surprised to find the new campus so huge and modern! At the
end of the day, we received a small gift from our headteacher. What a surprise!

Welcome to our new show, Colorful Animal Kingdom: a program introducing animals to the
young and old. In today's show, I will talk about how to raise bearded dragons. Bearded dragons
{#{QQABCQYEogiAAhAAAQgCQwGCCgGQkAECAAoGgFAIsAAAAANABAA=}#}
originate from the deserts of Australia，and this is one of several species that survive in that
climate. Today, bear dies like this one are fed here in the US. First, you need to have the right
supplies: a cage or something like that, a UV bulb, branches and rocks to climb on and rest on, a
food or water dish, and something to line the bottom of the cage. You can even take them
outside three times a week in the direct sunlight. Then it comes to the dietary needs of a bearded
dragon. They mainly eat insects, vegetables and the leaves of plants. Well, since bearded
dragons traditionally live in dry regions, they obtain most of their water naturally from what they
eat. You have to be sure to feed them plenty of vegetables that serve as good carriers of water.
