第二部分 阅读 (共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题; 每题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Four beautiful trips combining bikes and trains
Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail (小径)
The trail is an 87-mile pathway from Cleveland to Bolivar in Northeast Ohio. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) stretches out separately along the trail from Akron to Thornburg Station, a 31-mile stretch that passes through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The trail hugs the outline of the original Ohio and Erie Canal. Today, the trail passes many landmarks, including bridges, museums, and villages.
Danube Cycle Path
It is a path that follows the Danube River for about 745 miles, from Donaueschingen,
Germanny to Budapest, Hungary. The path is most popular in Austria featuring 245 scenic miles serviced by local and long-distance trains. Most cyclists choose to ride from west to cast with the flow of the river, to take advantage of the natural slope (斜坡) of bicycle traffic.
Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail
The tail extends for 25 miles through woodlands next to the Lehigh Rive. A historic tourist railway called the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway follows the trail, allowing cyclists to create a one- way ride rather than backtracking. The rail trail is mostly flat and passes through Lehigh Gorge State Park. While the train operates most days, the bike service is only offered one weekend a month from May to November.
Cinder Track
The Cinder Track is a 21-mile broken-stone pathway along the coast of Yorkshire, England: The towns of Scarborough and Whitby, where the trail begins and ends, both have train stations near the trail. The train journey is not a direct pathway between the two towns—in fact, the tracks of the original direct pathway were removed to create the trail. The trail, meanwhile, hugs the Yorkshire coast, with views of seaside bluffs (峭壁), fishing villages, etc.
21. What is special about the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail
A. It offers a chance to visit museums.
B. It goes past many cities and villages.
C. It shares most of its trail with CVSR.
D. It provides cyclists with a view of the sea.
22. What’s the disadvantage of the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for cyclists
A. The numerous sharp slope. B. The extremely rough path.
C. The connection with a railway. D. The time limit of bike service.
23. Which of the following covers the longest distance
A. The Cinder Track.
B. The Danube Cycle Path.
C. The Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail.
D. The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

Born in an unknown village in Huarong county, Hunan province, Yi had few opportunities to play instruments when he was young.
At the age of 6, when most performers have already begun studying the piano at music academies, Yi learned the traditional stringed instrument the erhu from a group of people lodging at his home. It was not until much later that he first saw a piano when he visited his cousin’s house in Huarong.
“My family was too poor to buy a piano for me, so I often used to visit my cousin, even though it took about an hour to travel the 20 kilometers to his home over rocky roads just for the opportunity to sit at the keyboard,” Yi said.
Yi first arrived in Shenzhen 19 years ago and worked in factories, on construction sites and in kitchens. He had not played a piano for nearly 30 years.
The public pianos in Huaqiangbei offered him a fresh start. On a hot summer’s day, while taking a break from work at a nearby construction site, Yi and his son passed one of the instruments. Encouraged by his son, Yi decided to give it a try.
He rubbed his hands nervously on his clothes, but the moment he placed his fingers on the keys, he felt more comfortable and his confidence returned. Although his masterly performance at the piano keyboard quickly made him an online sensation in China and overseas, Yi is not the only one to benefit from the pianos in Huaqiangbei.
Inspired by the British artist Luke Jerram, who has placed more than 2,000 street pianos in over 70 cities worldwide since 2008 with the words “Play Me, I'm Yours” printed on their sides, the public piano project in Huaqiangbei was launched by the local government in 2018.
Zhang Chen, deputy director of the Huaqiangbei subdistrict office, said: “Huaqiangbei is located in the commercial district in the center of Shenzhen. We have been trying to provide diverse facilities to bring high-quality public cultural services to the area. We are surprised that the public piano project has attracted so many people to play the instruments, and others to watch them perform.”
24. What do we learn about young Yi from the passage
A. He smoothed the path to piano lessons.
B. He was fascinated by musical instruments.
C. He received musical training at the age of 6.
D. He familiarized himself with erhu at his cousin’.
25. How did Yi feel when he decided to try playing the piano
A. Awkward. B. Confident. C. Amazed. D. Refreshed.
26. What is mainly talked about in the 7th paragraph
A. The artist's popularity. B. The project’s origin.
C. The artist’s creativity. D. The project’s challenge.
27. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. A city culture featuring the piano needs changing.
B. The street piano project fuels urban development.
C. Huaqiangbei gets in tune with its cultural ambitions.
D. Shenzhen takes the lead in promoting cultural prosperity.

Mars may seem like a dry, desolate place, but the red planet transforms into an otherworldly wonderland in winter, according to a new video shared by NASA.
It’s late winter in Mars’ Northern Hemisphere, where the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter are exploring an ancient river delta (三角洲) that once fed into Jezero Crater billions of years ago.
As the planet’s main feature, dust drives Martian weather, but the planet is no stranger to snow, ice and frost. There are two types of snow on Mars. One is the kind we experience on Earth made of frozen water. The thin Martian air and sub-zero temperatures means that traditional snow changes from a solid directly to a gas, before touching the ground on Mars.
The other type of Martian snow is carbon dioxide based, or dry ice, and it can land on the surface. A few feet of snow tends to fall on Mars in its flat regions near the poles. “Enough falls that you could snowshoe (穿雪鞋走路) across it.” said Sylvain Piqueux, a Mars scientist at NASA’S Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in a statement.
So far, no orbiters(轨道飞行器) or rovers have been able to see snow fall on the red planet because the weather phenomenon only occurs at the poles beneath cloud cover at night. The cameras on the orbiters can’t peer through the clouds, and no robotic explorers have been developed that could survive the freezing temperatures at the poles, which can be as low as minus 120 degrees Celsius.
However, the Mars Climate Sounder instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter can detect light that’s invisible to the human eye. It has made detections of carbon dioxide snow falling at the Martian poles. The Phoenix lander, which arrived on Mars in 2008, also used one of its laser instruments to detect water-ice snow from its spot about 1,600 kilometers away from the Martian north pole.
Thanks to photographers, we know snowflakes on Earth are unique and six sided. Beneath a microscope, Martian snowflakes would likely look a little different. “Because carbon dioxide ice has a symmetry (对称) of four, we know dry-ice snowflakes would be cube-shaped (立方体的), ” Piqueux said. “Thanks to the Mars Climate Sounder, we can tell these snowflakes would be smaller than the width of a human hair.”
Ice and carbon dioxide-based frosts also form on Mars, and they can occur farther away from the poles. The Odyssey orbiter (which entered Mars orbit in 2001) has watched frost forming and turning to a gas in the sunlight, while the Viking landers spotted icy frost on Mars when they arrived in the 1970s.
28. What can we learn about the snow made of frozen water on Mars
A. It contains lots of dust.
B. It makes the Martian air thick.
C. It keeps its form stable while falling.
D. It can hardly be seen on the Martian ground.
29. What makes it difficult for robotic explorers to see snow fall on Mars
A. The freezing temperature. B. The thickness of clouds.
C. The changing weather pattern. D. The distance from the poles.
30. What can the Mars Climate Sounder tell us about dry-ice snowflakes
A. Their smell. B. Their size. C. Their speed. D. Their direction.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. It Seldom Snows on Mars B. It Is Much Colder on Mars
C. The Beautiful Winter on Mars D. The Seasonal Changes on Mars
D
Amazon sometimes makes us check a box to save money. Those orange “coupon” (优惠券)
banners below the price on Amazon's online store are confusing. Why does Amazon make through the extra step of clicking a box to “save $2 when you apply this coupon ” Why doesn’t the coupon just apply automatically
The answer lies in the subtle but highly effective way Amazon and other stores use shopping psychology to influence our buying decisions. By making us click a box. Amazon hopes to avoid the “cart abandonment” problem—when shoppers add something to their virtual shopping cart but don’t end up buying it.
That’s a big challenge for online retailers. They miss out on billions of dollars of potential sales annually because of shoppers thinking twice about buying a product. Around 70% of online shopping carts containing at least one item are eventually abandoned, according to the Baymard Institute, an e-commerce consultancy based in Copenhagen.
The top reason customers walk away: They say they were just browsing and weren’t ready to make a purchase. So companies look for persuasion tactics (策略) to get shoppers to follow through and click the “buy” button. Amazon’s tactic to display a coupon option, instead of just automatically showing a discounted price, gives shoppers an extra incentive (动机) to make the purchase right away, say marketing experts.
Customers also want to be rewarded for the effort they put in to shop. It may not feel like much to click a box—but it does make a difference. Amazon’s coupon box puts customers in a more active and engaged role in landing a reward, making it more visceral (发自内心的) for them, said Tamara Masters, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business, who studies shopping psychology.
“By consciously seeing and clicking on the coupon box, instead of just having the coupon applied automatically, the reward can be felt more acutely,” Masters said. That’s a benefit to Amazon in the long run. “When a consumer feels rewarded after making an effort to purchase something, they are more willing to buy and more willing to pay,” she added.
The coupon box is just one of the ways Amazon targets shoppers looking for bargains. Amazon also has a standalone page on its website for coupons on select brands. If shoppers go to the page, they can clip the coupons virtually and don't have to take the extra step of checking a box.
This approach is designed to reach the shoppers who will shop exclusively based on which brands are offering coupons, which are different than products on sale, price promotions or discounts.
32. Why does Amazon apply the coupon box to help customers save money
A. To avoid the abandonment of coupons.
B. To ensure customers make wise choices.
C. To increase customers’ chance of buying.
D. To recommend good products to customers.
33.What is the motivation behind customers buying behavior according to Tamara Masters
A. Their effort to get a reward. B. Their expectations of price.
C. Their curiosity about the reward. D. Their desire to make a difference.
34.What does Tama Masters think of Amazon’s tactic
A. It is a losing bat in the long term. B. It can provide much convenience.
C. It might cause consumers complaints. D. It’s a reliable way to encourage purchase.
35. What do the last two paragraphs tell us about Amazon
A. It will save shoppers’ time to check a box.
B. It persuades select brands to offer coupons.
C. It tries various means to target different shoppers.
D. It plans to reduce unfair competition among brands.

Long before metal oven racks (烤箱架) were invented, many people would place the things that they wanted to bake onto stones to keep them from burning in ovens or even directly on heat. Traditional dishes like Native American flat bread employed a thick heavy stone over a low fire, onto which com was spread. 36 However, there are actually many applications for its use in baking.
Virtually, any baked food can be cooked on a stone instead of, or in addition to, a more modern pan. 37 Stones can store moisture(湿气) and produce a crispy, perfectly golden crust (酥皮) not easily attained in metal glass bakeware. And they are often optimized (优化) for certain temperatures and crust conditions.
38 Clay stone is popular, but some people prefer marble(大理石). Some are glazed and others are not, so there’s a great deal of choice on the market. A few companies make stone cookie sheets, muffin tins, and others to widen the applications possible for stone bakeware
In general, the thicker the stone, the more likely it is that your baked food will carry the taste of a traditional brick oven. A baking stone works by absorbing the heat from your oven, then evenly distributing it directly over the surface of the rising dough(生面团) 39 That way, they can lend more of the even browning, which is highly sought after by brick oven enthusiasts.
Finally, in most cases, you will need at least an inch (about 2.5cm) on each side of the stone to
Ensure proper air flow. This is particularly true if your oven is gas powered. The stone should not cause baked food to touch your oven’s heating elements. 40
A. Make sure it will ft inside of your oven.
B. The way that baking stones work is simple.
C. Many cooks praise the ability of the baking stone.
D. Thick stones can capture more heat than thin ones.
E. Baking stones come in different materials and shapes.
F. That makes them uniquely useful for many cooking creations.
G Today the baking stone is associated most with cooking pizza.

After twenty years of marriage, Melissas lost her husband, who was a brave soldier and passed away while defending his country.
They had a son, Mathew, who was 18 years old and very considerate. In his spare time, instead of paying, he worked at a local shop so he could help his mother reduce the financial burden.
When Mathew got his first pay cheque from the part-time job, he bought Melissa a beautiful dress and flowers. During the next few months, he often bought something to make his mother smile because he knew she still hadn’t recovered from the death of her lover.
As Christmas neared, Matthew’s friends began planning what to do during the holiday. Soon, they decided to go to a party, but Matthew refused to go with them. He didn’t want Melissa to feel lonely at home on Christmas. For him and Melissa, the day was special and significant, not only because it was their traditional holiday, but also because it was Melissa’s birthday.
“I'll stay at home with my mother,” he told his friends, “We rarely get to spend time together because she’s mostly on her flights when I’m home.” But later that day, Matthew learned his mother wouldn’t be home on Christmas. “Mom Why are you working on the big day ” he asked. The airline company Melissa worked for was quite short of attendants recently because many were sick. Besides, there was sharp increase in flights due to the holiday. So Melissa decided to continue working on Christmas to support her company and help serve passengers.
Melissa said, “I'm sorry, Matthew, You’ll have to spend the holiday alone. “She felt sorry that she could not enjoy the holiday with Matthew. Matthew was also upset. But before going to bed that night, Mathew got an idea to stay with his mother on Christmas. He would surprise her on the plane where she worked.
“I can still spend Christmas with her,” he thought. And he turned on his computer to check if the light his mother would be on still had seat left. “Yes! It still has seats!” he yelled.

Dear David,
I’m Lihua, from Class 2 Grade Three. Hearing that more extra-curricular activities are to be organized, I’m writing to recommend football.
Playing football enjoys much popularity among us. Physically demanding as it is, it can help us keep fit and improve our mental thinking such as strategic thinking and decision-making. Additionally, it requires us to work together as team, which promotes sportsmanship like fair play, discipline and cooperation among team members.
To conclude, it’s a great way to improve our health and sportsmanship. Hope my suggestions will be considered.
Yours,
Lihua
第二节 读后续写(25分)
Immediately, he booked himself a ticket for Christmas. Then, with the money he had saved, he bought his mother a necklace, flowers and a birthday cake. After his mother left for the airport on Christmas day, Matthew left and secretly reached the airport. Once the boarding began and Matthew saw his mother enter the plane, he joined the queue and boarded the plane. Inside the airplane, he saw his mother standing at the upper end of the aisle, helping passengers find their seats. Instead of approaching her, Matthew walked towards his seat.
Later, while passing by Matthew’s seat, Melissa yelled, “Matthew Is that you ” When Matthew looked up to face his mother, her eyes widened in shock, and she covered her mouth with hands. “Oh! What are you doing here ” she asked. “I just wanted to spend this day with you, Mom,” Matthew hugged his mother, and handed her the gifts. With her arms around Matthew, Melissa cried, thinking how happy she was to have such a son. Seeing this, all the passengers clapped and sang “Happy Birthday” to Melissa.

M: (14)When I was seven, my uncle taught me to play a card trick. The trick is still in my current show. Each night’s performance of that magic makes me think of my uncle.
W: You do almost 500 performances a year. How has magic affected you in your life
M: Fortunately, I love what I do. (15)Magic has certainly made my life special and allowed me to have the chance to make many of my dreams a reality on stage.
W: (16)Many people like making the Statue of Liberty disappear. Have you ever felt challenged to do something like that
M: Yeah, it was the most difficult, (16)and it took me over five years to create it. A few other things I have always wanted to do are putting a woman’s face on Mt. Rushmore, straightening the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
W: What do you want to say to your fans
M: Well, one of my tricks is to make ten people selected from the audience disappear from the stage, all at the same time. However, without giving away any secrets, the selected people are as amazed as the audience themselves!

W: Come and join the British Museum Tour. (17)It’s 110 per adult, 55 per child and 240 for a family of three. You will tour the museum with a local guide without waiting in line. Everyone will be provided with a bottle of water and a brochure of the museum. Meals are also included. (18)But we don’t provide snacks and arrange buses for hotel pickup. (19)The British Museum was founded in 1753. Six years later, it opened to the public on 15th January, following the gift of 71,000 objects left by Sir Hans Sloane to King George II, for the nation. The British Museum is the world’s largest national museum attracting an incredible six million visitors a year. Although entrance to the museum is free, it is home to one of the finest collections in existence with over eight million objects. Those objects cover two million years of human history, so our committed guide will make sure you see all the must-see highlights. (20)The museum has played host to many films and even had its own underground station for over 30 years until Holborn station opened a few yards away in 1933.
