Calling all photographers!
We've all been spending more time indoors lately. Whether you've been killing time looking back at photos from holidays past, risking taking walks to local sites, or busy working at home, we want to see your best photos on an archaeological (考古的) theme. Send them to us for your chance to win the first prize in our yearly CWA Photo Competition and have your work shown in the magazine.
The winning image and three runners-up will be featured in CWA. The overall winner will get a free 2-year subscription (订阅) to the magazine.

Rules:

Microsoft won't renew the contracts (合同) for dozens of news production contractors working at its MSN website and plans to use AI (人工智能) to replace them.
The roughly 50 employees were informed that their services would no longer be needed beyond June 30, but a team of full-time journalists will remain.
The Microsoft spokesman said in a statement, “Like all companies, we analyze and make judgments on our activities and services on a regular basis. This can result in increased investment (投资) in some places and, from time to time, rearrangement in others. These decisions are not the result of the current pandemic (流行病).”
MSN will use AI to replace the production work its journalists had been doing. That work includes using an automated system to identify trending news stories from dozens of publishing partners and to help improve the content by rewriting headlines or adding better accompanying photographs or slide shows.
“I spend all my time reading about how automation and AI are going to take all our jobs — now it's taken mine,” one of the terminated ( 被终止的) contractors said. “But with fewer human beings to monitor the technology, AI may not be fully familiar with strict editorial guidelines and could end up letting through inappropriate stories.”
MSN has undergone a number of changes since its launch as Microsoft Network in 1995. Once it offered original content and links to news, weather, and sports. In 2013, it reduced original news content and began cutting employees. By 2014, it launched a redesigned version that partnered with other news sites — paying them to redistribute their content. Today, the news service relies entirely on those partnerships with no original news content of its own. Selecting and editing stories rather than actually generating them made it easier for MSN to increasingly rely on an automated editing system.

The sunflower sea star has been listed as a critically endangered (极度濒危的) species following a groundbreaking population study led by Oregon State University (OSU) and The Nature Conservancy.
“These giant sea stars used to be easy to find and were a hit with divers. Unfortunately, your chances of finding one now are next to nothing in most of the contiguous (邻近的) United States — this listing is one step to extinction — and I don't think they're coming back without help,” said OSU's Sarah Gravem, a research associate in the College of Science and the lead author of the study.
Populations of the sunflower sea star suffered dramatic crashes because of a marine (海洋的) wildlife epidemic event, which began in 2013. Scientists used more than 61, 000 population surveys from 31 data sets to calculate a 90.6% decline in the sunflower sea stars and estimated that as many as 5.75 billion animals died from the disease, whose cause has not been determined. Moreover, the research showed no sign of population recovery in any region in the five to seven years since the event.
Sunflower sea stars are a key catcher of purple sea urchins (海胆) and the sea star decline has helped the increase in the urchin population in many regions. Too many urchins are linked to a decline in kelp forests (海藻林) already facing pressure from marine heat wave events, making the future uncertain for ecosystems (生态系统) that provide habitat for thousands of marine animals and help support coastal economies.
“Because most people aren't out in the ocean every day, we don't realize how much it's being changed and impacted by humans. We need to think creatively about how to keep our ocean healthy. While reducing the release of carbon dioxide is the most pressing need, rebuilding key catcher populations, like the sunflower sea star, can be an important piece of the puzzle too,” said study co-author Sara Hamilton, a Ph. D. candidate in the OSU College of Science.

It may be the holiday season, but the spirit of peace and goodwill has not infected ( 感 染) the streets of Los Angeles. More drivers seem to be rolling through stop signs and running red lights than ever before. Everyone seems to be in a terrible hurry.

I think perhaps the answer lies in answering this question: What does that round of parties and meetings and mad rushing from place to place allow all of us to avoid confronting I think the answer is clear — ourselves.
There is an experiment where subjects had to choose between being alone with themselves and their thoughts for approximately 15 minutes and receiving electric shocks. The majority chose the shocks — a reflection of how painful, frightening, threatening, confusing, boring (!), you name it ... we find being alone with just ourselves and our thoughts.
Our desire not to be with our innermost thoughts is so great that we create and find distractions (使人分心的事物). In the car, we can make phone calls or listen to music. We live in a world of endless opportunities for distraction.
I understand the desire. Life is hard. Growing is a painfully slow process. To keep moving requires determination and strength — and giving up seems so much easier (as do those electric shocks!). We may win some battles, but the war is never over. Sometimes we are just too tired to fight and just need that music or that book to relax. I just instinctively (本能地) turn on the radio when I get in the car; I don't even give the quiet a moment to sink in.
But it's time for a reality check; otherwise we slip into an avoidance mode. It's challenging. But let's make a change. Instead of rushing from house to car to meeting to groceries to ... let's take a moment to stop and think before each activity. What do I want to achieve now And what is the best way to do that Maybe I could think of ways to grow.

A Dream Come True
For many years, I kept having the same dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.

Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all, I longed to someday march down the aisle (走廊) to receive my diploma (毕业文凭). That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition. My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Years later, I married and had three children, and I thought, “There goes my diploma.”

But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. Caring for stray dogs
In order to raise the students' awareness of caring for animals, my class visited stray dogs in the local animal shelter last Sunday.
Some students helped refill the dogs' water bowls and gave out their DIY toys and treats. Some helped walk them and clean up after them. Some were just there to pet them to make them feel less lonely.
From this activity, we have realized that everyone can be a hero to animals that are waiting for love. What's more, making kind choices to reduce their suffering can help us realize our place in our world.

It was exciting to go to school again but it was no picnic. At first, I felt really embarrassed to be sitting in a classroom with all the kids staring at me, even though I knew they were only doing it out of curiosity.
