Eyots and Aits- Thames Islands, by Miranda Vickers. The Thames had many islands. Miranda has undertaken a review of all of them. She will tell us about those of greatest interest.

Ross Salvo, a 12- year -old boy from Newtown, Connecticut, was very special in the way he served, cared about others and overcame challenges.
Ross suffered from various serious health problems. Shortly after birth, Ross had a brain injury. By the time Ross was two months old, he had already had one heart surgery and three brain surgeries. Ross survived his first days of life, but his health kept worsening. However, none of those stopped Ross from becoming the best version of himself and making a big influence on the people around him. The key was his amazing attitude, faith and spirit.
Ross wanted to be like everyone else. Where others saw differences, he saw things they had in common. As he once said to a kid who was mean to him,“so I have walking sticks... what's the difference ”His family always said he did not have a disability, but a "differability(不同的特性)”.
Ross was willing to try anything! And he did! He played soccer, basketball, and was an active member of the youth group at St. Rose of Lima church.
Ross enjoyed serving others. His parents were both Emergency Medical Technicians(EMTs). Ross trained himself in EMT and volunteered to help his parents train others at Westport Volunteer EMS.
Ross was also a great friend to many. He really cared about others and always tried to spread his great attitude to those around him. When people were struggling, he would encourage them,
His teacher, Amy LaRusso, said, “Ross had his challenges, but he never gave up. I am a better teacher because I had the honor of having him teach me.”
While Ross is physically gone from the earth, his spirit lives on. It is the wish of his family to have it spread further.

Most children have ever heard their parents yell “sit up straight!”or “don"t slouch (无精打采)!” when they eat dinner. Nowadays, it is also heard around another activity-video games. Ten-year-old Owen admits it takes him three to four hours a day to play games on his tablet computer. In addition, he plays for about two hours on the smart phone every day. As a result, he started suffering a severe pain in the neck around June or July. What's worse, the pain has spread to the hand and back gradually, which makes his mother Mezabin become concerned.
The doctors note the number of young children with the chronic pain(慢性痛) in their necks, arms and shoulders is on the increase sharply in recent years. They are not aging, they haven't had an accident, the blood reports are fine, their X-rays are fine. Facts have proved that the pain is from the poor posture while they are playing video games on smart phones or other electronic devices. 19-year-old student Nida feels pain in the finger which holds the weight of her smart phone most of the day. Nida almost uses her smart phone 24/7, which means 24 hours a day,seven days a week, or all the time.
Health experts predict there will be not only physical but psychological and emotional problems resulting from the overuse of electronic devices. They encourage people to often take breaks and exercise from using computers, smart phones or other devices. Stand up. Stretch the legs, back, shoulders and arms in all the possible directions. That is the most effective way and maybe the key to solving the problem completely. After all, the medication does not help sometimes.

A new study has found that social media could be affecting the sleep of young adults.
The study is a project of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine. They found that young people who often use social media are more likely to suffer from sleep disorders than those who use social media less. The researchers say doctors should ask young adults about their use of social media when treating sleep issues.
“This is one of the first pieces of evidence that social media use really can influence your sleep.” said Jessica C Levenson. She was the lead author of a report on the study.
The researchers set out to examine the connection between social media use and sleep among young adults. Levenson noted that these young adults are possibly the first “generation to grow up with social media.”
The researchers wanted to find out how often young people used social media sites like Face book, Twitter, Credit and Tumbler. For the study, they gave questionnaires(问卷) to nearly 1,800 adults, aged 19 to 32. On average, members of the study group used social media sites one hour a day. They also "visited various social media 30 times per week. ”
Thirty percent of the study's participants reported having serious problems with sleeping. Those people who used social media a lot were three times more likely to have a sleep disorder. And those who spent the most time on social media were two times as likely to suffer from sleep disturbances.
Levenson said the number of times a person visits social media is a better predictor of sleep problems than overall time spent on social media. If this is true, she adds, then practices that stop such behaviors may be the most effective.
