COVID-19 vaccinations (接种) are underway. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, has said that about 75% to 90% of Americans will need to be vaccinated to reach herd immunity (群体免疫) in the United States. Public health experts recommended a staged approach to vaccination. Demand for the vaccine exceeded capacity in the beginning. Who is a genius This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.
Let’s state clearly: Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us And who are they
In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this is not a surprise. It’s said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women, or people of a different color or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.
A study recently published by Science found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender(性别)are “really, really smart.” Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief: Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are “really, really smart.” Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up It doesn’t take a genius to know the answer: absolutely not.
Here’s the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we’re all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with “intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world.”
24.What does the author think of victors’ standards for joining the genius club
A.They’re unfair. B.They’re conservative.
C.They’re objective. D.They’re strict.
25.What can we infer about girls from the study in Science
A.They think themselves smart.
B.They look up to great thinkers.
C.They see gender differences earlier than boys.
D.They are likely to be influenced by social beliefs
26.Why are more geniuses known to the public
A.Improved global communication. B.Less discrimination against women.
C.Acceptance of victors’ concepts. D.Changes in people’s social positions.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.Geniuses Think Alike B.Genius Takes Many Forms
C.Genius and Intelligence D.Genius and Luck
C
Reflecting(回忆) on the past about those decisions or actions that can’t be reversed(推翻) and being occupied with thoughts of “What if ” is no way to live. But there are a few things in life I’d probably do differently if I had the chance.
I once majored in architecture — something I had been crazy about for as long as I could remember — and then I suddenly had a change of heart. I made an appointment with my adviser, and told him I was no longer certain I wanted to pursue a career in architecture.
“Don’t give up on your childhood dream!” “He’s right,” I thought. “I should just stick it out and I shouldn’t disappoint the little girl who once loved architecture.”
It was awful. I was agonized, holding on to a childhood dream that had long since faded. When I talked with a friend about it a year later, he asked: “Right now, what do you want to do with your life ” That’s when I came to the realization that dreams change over time and that you should give up the childhood dream if it’s not what you want as an adult. Luckily, it wasn’t too late. After some serious thought, I changed my major to journalism. It wasn’t something I had always imagined myself pursuing — but at that moment, it was what I wanted.
We grow up, and sometimes our dreams change — and that’s perfectly OK. You just need to ask yourself every once in a while, “Is this still what I want ” If the answer is no, move on and start chasing a new one.
28.What does the author suggest in Paragraph 1
A.Past actions should be treasured. B.It’s unwise to regret all the time.
C.Life would be dull without “What if ” D.We make better decisions by looking back.
29.What does the underlined word “agonized” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Proud B.Determined C.Unregretful D.Painful
30.Why didn’t the author change her major immediately
A.Changing a major was uncommon
B.Her advisor forced her not to do that
C.She thought it a betrayal(背叛) of her younger self
D.She didn’t want her childhood dream to fade.
31.What lesson did the author learn from the experience
A.Don’t follow others’ career advice B.It’s OK to switch to our real love.
C.Improve us before realizing our dream D.Childhood dreams are hard to insist on
D
Life in the Clear
Transparent animals let light pass through their bodies the same way light passes through a window. These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feet---as far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch. Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology, says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless they’re eating it, or unless something is eating them.”
And they are as clear as glass. How does an animal become see-through It s trickier than you might think.
The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a straight line. But some materials slow and scatter (散射) light, bouncing it away from its original path. Others absorb light, stopping it dead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make an object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily.
But a transparent object doesn’t absorb or scatter light, at least not very much. Light can pass through it without bending or stopping. That means a transparent object doesn’t look very different from the surrounding air or water. You don’t see it you see the things behind it.
To become transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments (色素) that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal doesn’t have pigments, so its tissues won’t absorb light. According to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light from scattering.
Animals are built of many different materials---skin, fat, and more---and light moves through each at a different speed. Every time light moves into a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters. Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are simply very small or extremely flat. Without much tissue to scatter light, it is easier to be see-through. Others build a large, clear mass of non-living jelly-like (果冻状的) material and spread themselves over it.
Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have to make all the different tissues in their bodies slow down light exactly as much as water does. They need to look uniform. But how they’re doing it is still unknown. One thing is clear: for these larger animals, staying transparent is an active process. When they die, they turn a non-transparent milky white.
32.According to Paragraph 1,transparent animals .
A.stay in groups B.can be easily damaged
C.appear only in deep ocean D.are beautiful creatures
33.The underlined word “dead” in Paragraph 3 means .
A.silently B.gradually
C.regularly D.completely
34.One way for an animal to become transparent is to .
A.change the direction of light travel B.gather materials to scatter light
C.avoid the absorption of light D.grow bigger to stop light
35.The last paragraph tells us that larger transparent animals .
A.move more slowly in deep water
B.stay see-through even after death
C.produce more tissues for their survival
D.take effective action to reduce light spreading

“After we got married, we rarely had time to go dancing. But every once in a while, after the children went to bed, we’d pull out the record player and dance in the backyard under the stars.”
Leaning back in his chair, Josh appeared to be enjoying the story. “Wow, Granddad was quite a romantic guy!”

67.one possible version :
The next morning, Josh started to prepare his “present from the past” secretly. Picturing the scene where Granddad and Grandma once spent time together under the stars in his mind, Josh got down to carrying out his plans in the backyard. To his great delight, he managed to borrow several paper lanterns, a small TV tray and an old record player from neighbors. Songs to Grandma’s taste and a vase of wild flowers were also prepared. With everything ready, all he had to do was wait for the starry night to come.
After finishing dinner that night, Josh invited and led his grandma to the backyard. Eloise gasped in astonishment at what came into view — paper lanterns glowing against the sky, a small TV tray holding an old-fashioned record player and a vase of handpicked flowers — and her thoughts flew back to the past days when her husband was alive. Hearing Josh’s “Happy Birthday, Grandma!”, she came out of her trance and hugged him. Then Josh held out his hand and asked gently, “Would you like to dance, Eloise ” With bleary eyes, Eloise replied,“I’d love to, Josh.”
