Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of 28. While I was growing up, we lived a very 36 life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would 37 my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never 38 again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving 39 , telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I didn’t want to be bad enough. She drove that message 40 deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school-walking on my own!
When the Great Depression(大萧条)hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support
41 of us. At that moment, I decided never to be 42 again.
Over the years, I experienced business success. But the real turning point happened on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1916. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels for families and was 43 that they charged(收费)an extra $2 for each child. That was too 44 for most American families. I told my wife that I was going to open a hotel for families that would never charge extra for 45 . There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not 46 , mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of hard time. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my heart, I 47 doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest 48 system in the world - Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns(客栈)in more than fifty countries with an income of $1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situations. But if you can find a 49 in life worth working for and believe in yourself, 50 can stop you.

If you’re working to become better or hoping to make a change, you’ll probably hear your family and friends say “go big or go home’’. They think you should set high expectations. But is it really good
Having high expectations could be good. It can motivate you. When you have high expectations for something, you’ll probably try your best to make them come true. For example, if you believe that you can get an A in a test, you will probably spend a lot of time working on it. Also, when you start meeting your expectations, you’ll set even higher expectations for yourself. Besides, having high expectations on yourself doesn’t only do you good. It will make a difference to others.
But if your expectations are too high to realize, it can be bad. Having high expectations can sometimes lead to mind problems, such as worry and unhappiness. The findings of a study showed that some students were under serious stress because they wanted to be perfect. Great expectations can also let you down. This is especially true when you set expectations on other people whose actions you cannot control. For example, if you’re feeling alone and you call up your friends, you surely expect them to make you feel better. When this fails to happen, you will feel down and unsatisfied with your friends. To avoid this situation, you should set your expectations realistically (切合实际地).
It is hard to manage expectations, but the main thing is to set a more realistic and achievable expectation.

A.By calling up your friends. B.By controlling their actions.
C.By making others feel better. D.By setting your expectations realistically.
( )57.What is the best title for the text
A.Right views on Setting Expectations. B.Valuable Advice on Realizing Expectations.
C.Possible Reasons for Meeting Expectations.
D.Serious Problems in Achieving Expectations.

“Tonight ” I was not ready for this.
“Tonight,” he repeated. “We are a few miles off the Spanish coast. It will be dark, and the wind is blowing in the right direction. You agreed, Dr. Aronnax, to escape with me. Remember your promise!” I said nothing. “At nine o’clock,” continued Ned Land, “I will go to the stair with Conseil. You will wait in the library for our signal. I have already put some food in the dinghy. Everything is done!”
“The sea is quite rough,” I said.
“Yes, but if we don’t go tonight, we will soon be too far from land!” I knew that he was right. I was also frightened. What would Captain Nemo do if he discovered our plan, or if we failed I had not seen him for several days. Now, I did not want to see him. He might notice that I was nervous. I stayed in my room as the hours slowly passed.
At seven o’clock, I had dinner in my room. Only two hours to go! I was so nervous that I felt sick. I had a headache. I walked up and down in my room. As I looked around, I saw that Captain Nemo’s bedroom door was open. The room was empty.
It was eight o’clock, and I went to the dark library. As I waited, I felt a bump as the submarine(潜水艇) came to rest on the ocean floor.
The library door opened, and Captain Nemo entered. He told me that we were in Vigo Bay. A Spanish admiral(海军上将)had burned his own ships there in 1702 to prevent the British Navy from taking the huge amount of gold they were carrying. He took me to the window. The crew were gathering the gold from the sand and bringing it to the submarine. Now, I knew how Captain Nemo had become so rich.

( )59. Why did Dr. Aronnax remain in his room

Journalism(新闻业) is a fast-paced industry, requiring reporters to get the facts about newsworthy events and to write about them before a deadline(截止日期). It takes some skills to do this. At the same time, news reporters must follow strict requirements and have a deep understanding of news writing.
Know what you’re going to write about. Newsworthy events can happen anytime and anywhere. So reporters need to develop a good nose for news.
Get all the facts and look at the details. Be sure to look at a story from different angle(角度) . Even if you are covering a popular story or topic that others are writing about, look for an angle that will make this one yours.
Check facts to avoid mistakes. Sources may also make mistakes and some may even deceive you. It’s wise to get in touch with other sources. In a shooting event, for example, getting the facts from the police and from both the criminal and victim isn’t enough. You should also interview other witnesses who may give more information about the event. Interviewing people and getting a firsthand source on your topic can be valuable.
Start writing the news. When it comes to the body of the article, the main information should be given in the leading statement. It is often a short one, including the basics of what happened, where and when it took place, who was involved and why it’s newsworthy. These details are the main point that lets the reader know. Other information about the story follows. This form allows editors to cut off the last paragraphs if there’re space limits.
Check your article for mistakes. If time allows, leave the article for a moment and then read through it again with a fresh eye. Newspaper publications usually have someone check for mistakes but keep in mind that you’re the first line of defense(防护) . Grammar mistakes are embarrassing(令人尴尬的) , and some mistakes may result in a lawsuit(诉讼) .
( )62. What can we learn about journalism from the first paragraph
A.It is developing fast. B.It is very challenging.
C.It is very interesting. D.It is popular worldwide.
( )63.The underlined word “deceive” in Paragraph 4 is close to “________”.
A.warn B.help C.interest D.trick
( )64.Paragraph 5 tells us a good news article ________.
A.begins with a summary B.ends with happy ending
C.has enough smart questions D.gives opinions about the event
( )65.How can a reporter avoid getting embarrassed by his news report
A.By choosing a proper topic. B.By checking it for grammar mistakes.
C.By filling it with enough details. D.By removing boring facts from it.
