Passage 1
What are the keys to learning English Lai Shixiong believes that they are practice and hard work.
Lai, 68, is the president of the Ivy League Analytical English magazine. On March 20, 2016, he was invited to be one of the judges (评委) at the finals for the 14th China Daily “21st Century · New Oriental Cup” National High School and Primary English Speaking Competition.
Like many non-native speakers (母语非英语的人), Lai failed when he first started learning English. When he was in high school, he once got the low mark of 7 out of 100 on an English test. He almost gave up on English. But then he entered a military school (军校), where he met a classmate who was very good at English.
Inspired (受到激励) by his classmate, Lai decided to start learning English again. As he put it, “I saw myself as a baby who had just started to learn a language.” To correct his pronunciation, Lai practiced phonetic symbols (音标) hundreds of times every day using records.
When he was able to pronounce words, Lai said he began to practice dialogues. It was hard to find someone to practice with, so Lai created (创造) a learning environment on his own. “I just talked to myself as if I were in a dialogue,” he said.
He also thought of many ways to improve his skills. He used English to describe everything he saw. He even translated speeches when he went to class meetings at the military school. He also read and listened to English news to learn new expressions.
“There is no quick way to language learning. You have to practice,” Lai said. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

)Basketball, soccer, badminton and table tennis are common sports in China. But have you ever heard of kabaddi (卡巴迪) It is an Indian sport that is becoming popular around the world.
On Oct 22, 2016, the Kabaddi World Cup finished in India between 12 countries including the United States, Australia, Iran, Poland, Argentina and Kenya.
Kabaddi is a sport that is much like chasing (追赶). There are two teams, each with seven players. Each team takes turns sending a “raider (袭击者)” into their opponent’s half (对手的半场). The raider earns points by touching them and making it back to safety in their half.
The opposition earns points if they tackle (拦截) the raider once one of their players is touched. To make it more difficult, the raider is not allowed to take a breath when in the opponent’s half. To prove he isn’t breathing, the raider shouted “kabaddi” until back into safety.
India has won every Kabaddi World Cup. China got to see it for the first time at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing. International Kabaddi Federation president Janardan Singh Gehlot said they wanted to take the sport to the Olympics.
“We already took kabaddi to Asia, but now we want to take it to the Olympics. We want people to play kabaddi all across the world,” he said.

Passage 3
The taxi has an important role in Britain. When thinking of London, many images come to mind: Big Ben, the Ferris wheel (摩天轮), red telephone boxes…and black London taxis.
But what is so special about a simple taxi First of all, the shape and style of taxis are very different from ordinary ones. It looks like a half-car and half-van (半厢式货车). It has plenty of room in the back, which means it’s easy for disabled people (残疾人) to use. And the black color makes it stand out on the road.
Besides the style of the car, taxi drivers have an important part in your travel. They have to pass a taxi driving test, and in London it is very difficult. As there are many tourists in London, driver must know many roads by memory!
Apart from driving you to your destination (目的地), it is normal for the driver and passenger to have a conversation. Getting a taxi involves (涉及) a social space which the driver and you share. The image of a London taxi driver is one that is friendly and talkative. Most times that I get a taxi, I ask how the driver is. Then we usually talk about sports or news events.
In China, I’ve noticed that taxi drivers are usually quieter. Sometimes I try to speak with them in Chinese. And when I do, they usually seem friendly and open to talk. It’s also a good situation to practise my Chinese!
