Analysis of materials
We know American diverse cultures are reflected every field of the social life, among which is the eating diversity. Part A introduces four kinds of American foods-- hamburgers, fortune cookie, gumbo and nachos, which were invented in America but mixed with other peoples’ flavors and features. Actually, during the international communication, the culture mix always takes place, especially the food or dishes. Part A is a radio interview about American food in a studio between the host and guest Steve Fox. At the beginning of the interview, the host pointed out the topic “Cultural Influence on American Food”. Then Steve Fox talked about the four mixed-culture dishes.
Analysis of students
In previous class, students have learnt that America is a country with diverse cultures. However, students are not so clear why America is such a country. In this class, the teacher will choose food as an example to show how cultures meet and mix with each other. Students in this class are mostly girls who are active to participate in class. However, students’ English level in this class is just in the medium level. So the teacher should try to make the task level match the students’ English level.

Unit3 Diverse Cultures
----Listening and speaking
Take notes:
key words
omit articles
use abbreviations
Teaching refection
This class concentrated on the first part of this unit --- listening and speaking. In this part, students listened to a conversation about cultural influences on American food and practiced the strategy of taking notes. Students also talked about their hometown’s food. Through the tasks, students understood that food was a symbol of culture and there are many phenomena of mixed cultures, which is closely related to the topic of this unit --- diverse cultures.
In this class, all the teaching aims are achieved. The performances of the students showed that they not only understood the strategy of taking notes but also were able to use it, which is a surprise to me. What I was quite satisfied with this class is that I always remembered to respond positively to my students. I didn’t just give a right or wrong to the student who shared his/her answer.
There are some things that can be improved. Firstly, the time spent on the listening part is a little longer so that the time left for the speaking part is not enough. Next time I should pay more attention to the arrangement of time. Besides, in the speaking part, I should have provided more help for students, for example, some useful structures as I saw some students were not sure what to say.
