Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students talk about what they know about Steve Jobs
Draw a picture of an apple on a board. Ask students what they think of when they look at this picture. Then erase one section of the apple (making the symbol appear as the icon for the Apple company ). When students have identified the logo, write the name Steve Jobs on the board. You may skip this step if you feel students are ready to do the exercise.
Ask“What can you tell me about Steve Jobs ”Prompt students to recognise that Steve Jobs was the co-founder of Apple Inc., and was involved with the invention of many digital products.
Direct students to the Example, and read it aloud or have a student read it. Then have students get into pairs or small groups. Without looking at the text about Steve Jobs, ask them to write down words or phrases that they think might describe him.
Come together as a class and have students share their thoughts. Write their ideas on the board to look at later, if wanted.
Expansion: What do you think
Have students take a quiz about Steve Jobs before they read the text. (They are not expected to know the answers at this point. )Write the statements on the board. Have the students write numbers 1-5 in their books and then write True or False next to each.

2. He got several degrees at university. (False)
3. Steve founded Apple Computer Inc. with friends when he was 21 years old. (True)
4. The company sold a lot of its first important product. (False)

Reading
Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students skim the text to get main ideas
Direct students to the text about Steve Jobs. Ask“What type of reading is this ”Students will most likely be able to recognise it as an article about Steve Jobs. Ask them to look briefly at the text to find out what the article will describe about Steve Jobs. Examples: work, family, school, personal qualities and actions.
Ask students to tell you what skimming is. Make sure students understand that skimming means that you read quickly to get the main idea or overall meaning.
Then say“Skim the first paragraph in the article. What's this paragraph about ”Elicit; Who Steve Jobs was. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
Direct students to the headings in Exercise 2. Read them aloud. Then say“Skim the text and match the headings with the correct paragraphs”. Have them write a-e next to the corresponding paragraphs. Monitor, offering assistance as needed.
Go over the answers, first having students compare their answers. Then ask individual students to say the answers aloud.

If wanted, have students refer back to their ideas about Steve Jobs (listed on the board from Exercise 1). Ask“Did you find any of this information in the article ”
Exercise 3
Purpose: to help students identify the main ideas of a text and to complete tables based on a text
Have students think about the description of Steve Jobs in the text. Ask students, “Do you think the text gives a positive or a negative view of Steve Jobs ”Elicit opinions from students. Some may think it is neutral ( not positive or negative). Explain that texts can express either positive views or negative views, or be neutral. Have students look at the last paragraph of the text. Ask“What is negative in this last para-graph ” (He wasn't a perfect man. ) Then ask“What could be seen as positive ” ( He has been recognised as the father of the digital revolution...) Say“Some of the writer's views are positive, some are negative. What do you think the writer's overall opinion is That is the main idea of the text”
Direct students to the Reading Help box. Read the first sentence aloud or have a student read it. Then ask students to look at the text and read the first sentence to them-selves. Ask“Is the first sentence negative or positive ”Students may have differing opinions, but overall the view should be expressed as positive. Then read the second sentence of the Reading Help aloud or have a student read it.
Direct students to the table. Say“Now read the text again and fill in the examples to support the main ideas”. Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
Go over the answers, having individual students say the answers aloud.
Come together as a class and ask, “After looking at the writer's examples and reasons to support his / her view, what do you think the main idea of the text is ” Allow students to discuss this in small groups. Monitor, offering help as needed.
Come together as a class again and have students say what they think the main idea of the text is. Answers will vary, but students should say something like Although Steve Jobs had some negative qualities, he had many good qualities, which helped him achieve many great things.

Note: Use this activity with more proficient students. Have students discuss the text in more details. Here are some questions you can ask them:
·Why do you think formal schooling didn't suit Steve Jobs
·Why do you think Steve Jobs was fired from Apple in 1985
·Do you think it helped for Steve Jobs to spend 10 years away from the company (from 1985 to 1996) Why
·Would you want to work for somebody like Steve Jobs Why or why not
