The whale, as big as a locomotive(火车头) jumped out of the water, spinning(旋转) as though for joy, before jumping back under the waves. We watched the scene(场景) silently in astonishment, never having been so close to such a huge, fast-moving creature. It seemed almost possible to count the small shellfish on the whale’s skin.
In early December, gray whales, blue whales, and others had just started heading around the tip of Baja California, Mexico, moving as a community from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez. It’s in that protected waterway that pregnant whales give birth to their babies. Other whale babies, born the year before, could be seen sailing behind. All whale babies get two trips like this with their mom before they’re ready to start having babies of their own and making the journey on their own.
We’re in one of several small powerboats, sent out by Scuba Caribe, which carries on such tours in Cabo San Lucas. The whales seemed to be, at times, less than 100 feet from our boat when they rushed out of the water. At other times, they would get much closer and swim beside the boat.
“What if one lands on us ” a woman next to me wondered. Fernando Del Toro, the Destination Manager of Scuba Caribe said, “We haven’t had any incident (事件) of whales jumping over our boats as we always keep our distance. We’re sure they themselves are probably careful not to crash into boats. Such an accident would probably also cause them much harm.”
“Everyone can enjoy this magical trip,” said Del Toro. “However, we do not recommend(推荐) it for kids under 5 years old,” he added.
Though conditions on the water vary, our trip was wonderful. Even when the boat sped up to catch up with the whales, there was little need to “hang on”, and some of us remained standing throughout most of the trip. Still, you may want to pack medicine for those who might get seasick while bouncing(颠簸行进) along the waves.
4. How does the author start the text
A. By telling a story. B. By asking questions.
C. By describing a scene. D. By giving background information.
5. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. A description of the author’s journey.
B. A list of best places for whale-watching.
C. An introduction to the travelling of whales.
D. A suggestion on taking a whale-watching tour.
6. What does Del Toro say about whale-watching
A. It is suitable for all ages.
B. It is much too dangerous.
C. It may cause serious damage to wildlife.
D. It should be done from a proper distance.
7. How was the author’s trip
A. It was smooth in general.
B. It was tiring in particular.
C. It was destroyed by a storm.
D. It was terrible due to his seasickness.
C
Today, we have the ability to predict dangerous tornadoes (龙卷风), hurricanes (飓风) winter storms, and floods with more accuracy than ever. We know the areas that are likely to be struck by earthquakes, and the areas that are easily harmed by wildfires, and we can tell hours in advance whether a tsunami (海啸) will hit our shores.
However, in spite of all the capabilities for advance warnings, Americans are still quite poor at preparing for these disasters. In a 2006 poll (民意调查) carried out by TIME Magazine, only 16% percent believed they were “well prepared” for the next one.
A few weeks ago I was listening to NPR (National Public Radio) as I was cooking dinner, and I heard a moving story about a young boy, Noah Stewart, who lived through a tornado that hit his Alabama home.
Noah was sucked up into the tornado and then dropped. He landed on his head first, a fall of such force that, under normal conditions, would have killed him. However, he survived because his mother made a quick decision to put a baseball helmet on his head right before the tornado hit. Noah was unhurt in the storm. But the helmet cracked (破裂) down the middle.
The CDC states that they can’t say whether helmets save lives during a tornado impact (撞击) . However, it still seems wise for anyone in a tornado-prone (可能的) area to keep several helmets at the ready. Any added protection is going to increase your chance of survival, and as Noah’s story clearly shows, helmets can save lives.
You don’t have to buy new helmets—picking up used bicycle, football, or baseball helmets at economical stores and garage sales (旧货市场) can save money and keep your family protected.
However, it’s necessary that you keep these helmets in an easily reachable place; they should not be used for any other purpose, as they may be misplaced. Remember, when a tornado hits, you might only have minute—or even seconds—to find shelter. You don’t want to be running around the house, searching for those helmets.
8. What can we infer from Paragraph 2
A. Americans are fear of disasters.
B. There are many disasters in America.
C. Disasters are better predicted in America.
D. Most Americans are not well prepared for disasters.
9. Why could Noah Stewart survive in the tornado
A. Because he stayed with his mother.
B. Because he was brave in the tornado.
C. Because he was well protected by a helmet.
D. Because he was quick-minded in emergency.
10. What should you do to make the helmets function well
A. Put them at hand. B. Choose new ones.
C. Use professional ones. D. Save money to buy expensive ones.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To ask us to prepare for the disasters. B. To warn us of the tornado impact.
C. To advise us to keep helmets handy. D. To describe the moving story of a boy.
D
It can be incredibly difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter, particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too.
Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways. But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
12. What did the new research find
A. Running fast benefits all of us. B. Running is the best exercise.
C. A short time run can be beneficial. D. A healthy mind encourages us to run.
13. What does the underlined words “participants” in Para 2 refer to
A People who are doing a research. B. People who love running.
C People who are professional athletes. D. People who are taking part in an activity.
14. Which is related to our happiness
A. Blood flow. B. Cycling. C. Medicine. D. Colors.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. We should go for a run in winter. B. Running really benefits us mentally.
C. We don’t need a lot of exercise. D. Running on a treadmill is better than running outside.

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.
“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not to invite Lucy to the party.”
“She never even talks to me!”
Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her to get to know everyone.”
“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!” Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.
“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!”
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope (缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.
The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

B Because he was brave in the tornado.
D 9. C 10. A 11. A
根据第二段“However, in spite of all the capabilities for advance warnings, Americans are still quite poor at preparing for these disasters. In a 2006 poll (民意调查) carried out by TIME Magazine, only 16% percent believed they were “well prepared” for the next one.”(然而,尽管拥有预警能力,美国人在应对这些灾难方面仍然相当差劲。
根据第四段中“However, he survived because his mother made a quick decision to put a baseball helmet on his head right before the tornado hit. Noah was unhurt in the storm. But the helmet cracked (破裂) down the middle.”(然而,他活了下来,因为他的母亲在龙卷风来袭之前迅速决定在他的头上戴上一个棒球头盔。
根据倒数第二段“You don’t have to buy new helmets—picking up used bicycle, football, or baseball helmets at economical stores and garage sales (旧货市场) can save money and keep your family protected.”(你不用买新头盔——在经济型商店和旧货市场淘到用过的自行车、足球或棒球头盔可以省钱并保护你的家人。)最后一段中“it’s necessary that you keep these helmets in an easily reachable place”(你必须把这些头盔放在一个容易拿到的地方。) 故选A。
故选A。
13. What does the underlined words “participants” in Para 2 refer to
A. People who are doing a research. B. People who love running.
C. People who are professional athletes. D. People who are taking part in an activity.
14. Which is related to our happiness
A. Blood flow. B. Cycling. C. Medicine. D. Colors.
15 What is the main idea of the text
A. We should go for a run in winter. B. Running really benefits us mentally.
C. We don’t need a lot of exercise. D. Running on a treadmill is better than running outside.
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

由第二段中“Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain. (结果显示,自我报告的快乐和大脑活动程度的增加达到了最高点)”第三段中“In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). (换句话说,跑步者被发现大脑中与处理功能和控制情绪有关的部分的血流量增加)”可知,血液流量与我们的快乐相关。故选A项。

She got up early this morning_________ _________ _________ _________to school on time.
【答案】 ①. in ②. order ③. to ④. get
50. The teacher highly recommended that we should make full preparations for the exams.(同义转换)
It was highly recommended that full preparations_________ _________ _________for to exams.
【答案】 ①. should ②. be ③. prepared
故填should be prepared。
51 I recognized him in the crowd when I was walking in the street.(对划线部分进行强调)
It was when I was walking in the street that I recognized him in the crowd.
根据要求,这里需要用强调句对状语when I was walking in the street强调,且这里时态为一般过去时,所以应用句型it was+强调部分+that+剩余部分。故填It was when I was walking in the street that I recognized him in the crowd。
52. I have a friend. He likes listening to classical music.(用关系代词改写)
I have a friend who/ that likes listening to classical music.
I have a friend who/ that likes listening to classical music.
Reading aloud is very important for learning a foreign language.
Reading aloud is very important for learning a foreign language.

Lucy’s present was the very last to be opened. Worrying that it would ruin the party, Madison grabbed the present reluctantly and ripped open the gift-wrap paper. Inside was a delicately hand-made lead rope! Shocked, she widened her eyes, covering her hands over her mouth. “It’s a lead rope for your horse Star. I made it by myself!” Madison pulled it out of the box and placed it on her lap, amazed at its beauty. Lucy added, “I heard you talking about your horse at school. That’s when I got the idea to make you a lead rope. ”
Deeply moved by what she said, Madison held the lead rope tightly in her hands. It was, by far, her very favorite birthday present of the day. She suddenly felt so bad because she had been so mean to Lucy. With tears swirling in her eyes, she blinked hard to fight them back, feeling a mixture of regret and gratitude. “Thanks so much for this lead rope. I love it! Would you like to join us and be our friends?” Lucy nodded cheerfully. Madison put her arm around Lucy’s shoulders, both smiling. With applause and laughter echoing through the house, Lucy joined the other girls to enjoy the party.
