A
Solar Panels
While both solar panels and plant leaves harvest energy from the sun, a team at Princeton University took biomimicry (仿生学) in solar panels a step further by adding folds to solar cells. The folds look like the natural wrinkles found in leaves, channeling more light into the cell. The researchers claimed in 2015 that the leaf-like cells generated 47 percent more electricity than those without folds.
Self-Cleaning Paint
The surface of the lotus (莲) plant’s leaves gets rid of dirt and water so well that this self-cleaning quality was named the “lotus effect” in 1977. In 1999, the German building company Sto released an outdoor paint called Lotusan. When dried, the paint’s surface is similar to that of the lotus leaf to shed water and dirt off immediately.
Bullet Trains
The Shinkansen Bullet Train in Japan is known for its aerodynamic shape that decreases the amount of sound the train makes while entering and exiting tunnels at speeds of 150 to 200 mph. The trains were modeled on a bird that hunts fish by diving into bodies of water. The shape of the train also allows it to travel 10 percent faster with about 15 percent less electricity.
Wetsuits
Unlike whales, beavers (河狸) don’t have layers of fat to keep them warm when they dive into icy water. Instead, their thick fur traps air among the individual hairs, keeping the mammals warm and dry. In 2016,a team of engineers at MIT sought to copy this quality in a wetsuit covered with rubber “hairs”, specifically designed for watersports athletes like surfers. Just like beavers, the athletes would be kept warm by hair trapped on the outside of the suit.
21.Which item is a brainchild of a German company
A.Solar Panels. B.Self-Cleaning Paint.
C.Bullet Trains. D.Wetsuits.
22.How does a wetsuit keep watersports athletes warm
A.By shedding water immediately. B.By thickening the layers of the suit.
C.By adding special hairs to trap heat. D.By self-heating the outside of the suit.
23.What do these inventions have in common
A.They are nature -inspired. B.They increase fuel efficiency.
C.They are environmentally-friendly. D.They generate no economic returns.

In Saskatchewan, Canada, vegetables have a short growing season. So a very unique farm in Hudson Bay is growing fresh, pesticide-free(无农药的)vegetables in a hydroponic(水培的)farm all year long. There the plants are grown in water instead of soil.
Growing vegetables in the middle of nowhere, about 300 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, may seem like a big risk, but there is no other place for people to get locally grown food. Produce is available in local supermarkets but it is trucked in from far away.
The idea to turn the no longer used Stewart Hawke school into a farm came to the Nels when Hudson Bay asked for bids (投标)for the building in 2018. It was empty and if an alternative use wasn’t found, it would be pulled down. “We started looking for ideas, and we went and proposed doing this, ”Jan Nel said. “And they loved it. ”
After the proposal was accepted, the family worked together to prepare the building in January 2019 and they planted the first seeds in just one classroom the next month.
The company has grown and is now using several rooms thanks to the quality of the produce and the fact that it is local, according to June Nel. “It’s not two weeks old;it hasn’t travelled across the country or across the world, ”she said. “It actually tastes like lettuce. Lots of people have commented on our herbs. It actually still tastes fresh when you get it, and there’s no pesticide used. ”
She expects more producers to turn to hydroponics in the future but notes that the technology is limited to only some fruits and vegetables and doesn’t work for potatoes or grains. “It’s not the answer to the food security question or challenge, but it will play an increasingly larger role, ”she adds.
24.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A.Vegetables are plentiful in Saskatchewan.
B.People in Saskatchewan can’t get fresh vegetables.
C.Hydroponic farms are very popular in Saskatchewan.
D.The climate in Saskatchewan is not good for farming.

B.A Family Devote to Improving People’s Life
C.A Used School Turns into a Hydroponic Farm

Top figure skaters spin at such unbelievably fast speeds—as many as six revolutions per second—that it can make even audiences feel a little dizzy. Although they occasionally fall down upon landing, figure skaters mostly spin through the air without losing their balance. That’s because they have conditioned their bodies and brains to stop that dizzying feeling.
Kathleen Cullen, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, studies the vestibular (前庭的) system, which is responsible for our sense of balance and motion, and says spinning without falling from dizziness is an art perfected over time. At the start of their careers, skaters and other athletes feel dizzy when they spin around. But ultimately, they train their brains to better interpret that feeling.
“Something really fundamental happens in the brain of people like dancers or skaters over lots of practice. And that’s basically a change in the way the brain is processing information,” Cullen says. “When you spin around, you’re activating the semicircular canals (半规管). They’re filled with liquid and they’re sensing your circular movement. But when you stop, the liquid has inertia and it tends to continue to move. They get a false sensation of movement. Over years of training, figure skaters’ brains have adapted and learned to ignore this error.”
Athletes also learn ways to reduce their dizziness. For example, focusing on a fixed reference or motionless object minimizes dizziness and loss of balance. “Ballet dancers often move their heads around during each turn to fixate on a visual reference. Similarly, at the end of the spin, athletes will focus on a specific spot on the wall to provide a fixed reference,” Cullen says.
“The brain and the inner ear are in constant communication with the body and one another to achieve balance,” says Brigid Dwyer, an assistant professor of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine. “For most people, however, dizziness is only a potential issue during faster and more forceful activities,” Dwyer says. “Amazingly, when needed, our brains can be well adapted to the dizzying tasks we encounter.”
28.Why do figure skaters hardly feel dizzy after spinning in the air
A.They can maintain the balance well.
B.They are in good physical condition.
C.They have trained long periods for that.
D.They are gifted at controlling their brain
29.What does the underlined word “inertia” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.The force to make an object move faster.
B.The force to get an object to start moving.
C.The nature to change an object’s original state.
D.The nature to remain an object’s original state.
30.What does Paragraph 3 focus on
A.Scientific analyses. B.Helpful perception.
C.Practical examples. D.Amazing outcome.
31.What does Brigid Dwyer seem to tell us in the last paragraph
A.Dizziness exists in many dynamic activities.
B.The brain can communicate with inner ears.
C.Communication is vital to keeping balance.
D.The brain can be used to dizziness over time.

The 2010s brought no shortage of miraculous technologies, from tablet computers to4G mobile internet. But these had surprisingly little effect on the economy. During that decade productivity growth in the developed countries averaged a miserable (少得可怜的) 1% a year, holding down average wages. Innovative firms embraced new tech, but many less adventurous ones did not bother. The experience showed that technological breakthroughs and improvements in average living standards do not always go hand in hand.
Generative AI, its developers say, will be different. Not since the invention of the internet has a new technology so captured the public imagination. The technology is consumer-friendly: within days of its release to the public, Chat GPT, the most famous AI chat bot, had millions of users. It is easy to see how this innovation could improve all types of work at all types of firms, from increasing the accuracy of doctors’ diagnoses to helping programmers write software code more efficiently.
With that said, for AI to truly spread out in the economy, it needs to make its mark beyond the most innovative companies. And this will take time. Although the internet began to be used by some companies in the early 1990s, it was not until the late 2000s that two-thirds of American businesses had a website. About 70 world’s largest firms still show no interest in AI, according to our analysis. Some evidence even suggests that usage of Chat GPT and its competitors is falling — perhaps as people have tried it out, and then decided it is not for them.
Indeed, even the most powerful technologies take time to be adopted, because companies tend to use a mix of software and services, some of which may be years or even decades old. Replacing outdated systems can be costly and complicated. Moreover, in the many industries either run or heavily regulated by the government, such as healthcare, education and construction, bosses and trade unions often resist the application of new technology, worried that it will lead to job losses. In time AI could well transform how people live their lives and do their jobs. But the road to widespread usage, and any resulting productivity boom, will be a long one.
32.What is paragraph 1 mainly about
A.How productivity affects average wages.
B.Why the 2010s is a productive decade.
C.Whether economic growth follows new technologies.
D.What innovative companies care for.
33.What does the author want to indicate by mentioning Chat GPT in paragraph 2
A.AI’s public imagination. B.Consumers’ enthusiasm.
C.AI’s healthy profits. D.AI’s huge potential.
34.What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A.Big firms are less motivated to adopt new tech.
B.More efforts are needed to advocate AI.
C.Chat GPT is falling behind its competitors.
D.Websites were uncommon in the early 2000s.
35.Which word best describes the author’s attitude towards the future of AI
A.Hopeful. B.Worried. C.Cautious. D.Pessimistic.

What Makes a Great Teacher
Teaching is one of the most complicated jobs today. It demands a variety of qualities: broad knowledge, enthusiasm, a caring attitude and a desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. No wonder that it’s hard to find great teachers. 36 .
Great teachers are prepared and organized. They are in their classrooms early and ready to teach. 37 . Their classes are organized in such a way as to minimize distractions (分心).
Great teachers engage students and get them to look at issues in various ways. Effective teachers use facts as a starting point, not an end point. They ask “why” questions, look at all sides and encourage students to predict what will happen next. They ask questions frequently to make sure students are following along. They try to engage the whole class, and they don’t allow a few students to dominate the class. 38 .
Great teachers are warm, accessible, enthusiastic and caring 39 . They make themselves available to students and parents who need them. They are involved in school wide committees and activities. They form strong relationships with their students and demonstrate a commitment to the school.
40 . They exhibit expert knowledge in the subjects they are teaching and spend time continuing to gain new knowledge in their fields. They present material in an enthusiastic manner and meet their students’ needs to learn more on their own.
A.Parents set high expectations for their kids
B.Here are some characteristics of great teachers
C.Great teachers are masters of their subject matter
D.They present lessons in a clear and structured way

Our science teacher always enjoys giving out challenging assignments to our Grade 10 science class. Unlike other teachers who hand out page upon page of textbook questions, Mr. Hussey seems to prefer having the students learn science through a more hands-on, do-it-yourself approach.
“Today, ”said Mr. Hussey, “everyone will be making an icebox!”As we sat in awe, trying to imagine what kind of device he was referring to, Mr. Hussey handed out the project instructions. In groups of two, we would design a storage (贮藏) device that was capable of keeping its contents at a constant temperature for a certain period of time, regardless of the outside temperature. The competition was quite straightforward:every contestant would receive a cube (立方体) of ice. The team that had the biggest piece left the next day would win!
As always, I partnered with my best friend, Vlad. That afternoon we went straight to the library. After an intense discussion, we agreed on the basic idea of having the ice cube inside a box, which would be put inside another bigger box. Between the two boxes would be the heat insulator (绝缘体).
The first test of the icebox was extremely disappointing. Since this was our first experiment, we both wanted good results to build our confidence. Before I went to bed that night, I carefully picked out a huge block of ice from our refrigerator and placed it inside the icebox. When I woke up the next morning and looked into the icebox, there wasn’t even a bit of ice left. Reflecting on this failure, we were determined to find a better insulating material. Then we tried the same experiment again. This time, we made it. There was 70 percent of the ice left.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The day of the competition came very fast.

W: Welcome to Stevenson’s, one of the country’s major producers of metal goods. Thank you for choosing us for your two weeks of work experience. My name is Julia, the managing director. Stevenson’s is quite an old company. It was set up in 1923 by Ronald Stevenson who went into the steel industry when he left school.
Stevenson’s original plan was to produce spare parts for the machine tools industry – although in fact that never happened. Shortly before the company went into production, Stevenson was given the opportunity to make goods for hospitals, so that’s what we did for the first five years.
Now some idea of what you’ll be doing during your two weeks with us. Most mornings you’ll have a presentation from one of the managers, to learn about their department. And you’ll spend some time in each department, observing and talking to people. Normally a teacher from your school will come in each week to find out how the group were getting on, but your school isn’t able to arrange that this year. OK, are there any questions before we move on
A
Solar Panels

25.What did the farm use to be
A.A supermarket. B.A school.
C.A garden. D.A factory.
26.What is the biggest advantage of the Nels’vegetables
A.They are cheap. B.They are fresh.
C.They are nutritive. D.They are delicious.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.A New Way Helps Deal with Food Security
B.A Family Devote to Improving People’s Life
C.A Used School Turns into a Hydroponic Farm
D.An Innovative Practice Boosts the Future of Farming
根据第一段“In Saskatchewan, Canada, vegetables have a short growing season.(在加拿大的萨斯喀彻温省,蔬菜的生长季节很短)”可知,Saskatchewan的气候不太适合农业种植。故选D。
根据第三段“The idea to turn the no longer used Stewart Hawke school into a farm came to the Nels when Hudson Bay asked for bids (投标)for the building in 2018.(2018年,当哈德逊湾对这栋建筑进行招标时,尼尔斯家族萌生了将不再使用的斯图尔特 霍克学校改造成农场的想法)”可知,这个水培农场过去是一个学校。故选B。
根据第二段最后一句“Produce is available in local supermarkets but it is trucked in from far away.(农产品在当地超市就能买到,但都是从很远的地方用卡车运来的)”和第五段最后一句中“It actually still tastes fresh when you get it, and there’s no pesticide used.(当你拿到它的时候,它尝起来仍然很新鲜,而且没有使用农药)”可知,最大优势是蔬菜很新鲜。故选B。
根据第三段“The idea to turn the no longer used Stewart Hawke school into a farm came to the Nels when Hudson Bay asked for bids (投标)for the building in 2018.(2018年,当哈德逊湾对这栋建筑进行招标时,尼尔斯家族萌生了将不再使用的斯图尔特 霍克学校改造成农场的想法)”结合文章主要讲述了加拿大的Nels一家将一个废弃的学校改造为一个水培农场的故事。

【答案】28.D 29.D 30.A 31.D

根据第一段“The 2010s brought no shortage of miraculous technologies, from tablet computers to4G mobile internet. But these had surprisingly little effect on the economy. During that decade productivity growth in the developed countries averaged a miserable (少得可怜的)1% a year, holding down average wages. Innovative firms embraced new tech, but many less adventurous ones did not bother. The experience showed that technological breakthroughs and improvements in average living standards do not always go hand in hand.(2010年代不乏奇迹般的技术,从平板电脑到4G移动互联网。但令人惊讶的是,这些措施对经济的影响微乎其微。在那十年里,发达国家的生产率平均每年增长可怜的1%,压低了平均工资。创新的公司拥抱新技术,但许多不那么冒险的公司却不闻不问。经验表明,技术突破和平均生活水平的提高并不总是齐头并进的)”可知,第一段主要是谈论新技术的诞生是否一定会导致经济增长。故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段“Generative AI, its developers say, will be different. Not since the invention of the internet has a new technology so captured the public imagination.(其开发人员表示,生成式人工智能将有所不同。自互联网发明以来,还没有一项新技术如此俘获了公众的想象力)”以及之后举例Chat GPT并列举其各种用途,证明其被采用的巨大潜力。由此推知,作者在第二段提到GPT是想说明人工智能的巨大潜力。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段“With that said, for AI to truly spread out in the economy, it needs to make its mark beyond the most innovative companies. And this will take time. (话虽如此,人工智能要想真正在经济中普及开来,它需要在最具创新性的公司之外留下印记。而这需要时间)”可推知,推广人工智能还需要做出更多的努力。故选B。
35.推理判断题。根据第四段“Indeed, even the most powerful technologies take time to be adopted, because companies tend to use a mix of software and services, some of which may be years or even decades old.(事实上,即使是最强大的技术也需要时间来被采用,因为公司倾向于使用软件和服务的混合,其中一些可能已经有几年甚至几十年的历史了)”以及“In time AI could well transform how people live their lives and do their jobs. But the road to widespread usage, and any resulting productivity boom, will be a long one.(假以时日,人工智能很可能会改变人们的生活和工作方式。但是,广泛使用的道路,以及由此带来的生产力繁荣,将是一条漫长的道路)”可推知,作者对人工智能的未来是谨慎的。故选C。

D.They present lessons in a clear and structured way
E.They know clearly which students are highly gifted
F.Teachers with these qualities are known to stay after school

A long time ago, there was a mountain 56 (name) “Chengdu Zaitian” in the vast wilderness. This mountain was home to the Kua Fu tribe, 57 members were all tall and mighty like giants.
Catching sight of the sunrise and sunset, Kua Fu suddenly hit upon an idea 58 he wanted to race against the sun to see who ran faster! The next day, the moment the sun came out, he took a big step and ran towards the sun 59 full speed. The sun, however, was not still, and it 60 (steady) rose from the horizon, reached the highest point and then set to the west. Kua Fu could not stop for 61 instant, and he ran like wind all the way, 62 (struggle) to catch up. Most of the day passed, and Kua Fu was finally about to overtake the sun in Yugu, where the sun 63 (suppose)to fall! But as he got closer, he felt exhausted and extremely thirsty when a huge heat wave hit him all over. Then Kua Fu drank up all the water of the Yellow River and the Weihe River. But that was still far from enough. Kua Fu threw his cane out with his last bit of 64 (strong), which turned into a peach forest with rich fruits, serving as a resting place for people to enjoy the coolness and take peaches as food 65 they continued their journey.
56.named 57.whose 58.that 59.at 60.steadily 61.an 62.struggling 63.was supposed 64.strength 65.before
故填that。
故填at。
短语for an instant表示“一刻,一会儿”。故填an。
故填was supposed。
故填before。

Dear Miss Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a senior at your high school. I’m writing to ask for a chance to take the oral test again. Last week, I suffered from a very high fever. The doctor suggested I ask for a sick leave. I followed his advice but unluckily, I missed Thursday’s oral test. When I knew I failed my favorite subject because of my illness, I felt very terrible and anxious. Actually, I’ve been studying very hard at English the whole year and I think I’ve made great improvements with your help. I plead you to give me another chance to reappear in the test so that I will be able to improve my grade.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The day of the competition came very fast.

The day of the competition came very fast. We all brought our masterpieces into the classroom. Every team had a different design-from boxes made of different materials to boxes that operated in different ways. One fellow even attached a motor to his icebox and turned it into a refrigerator. Before we left school, Mr. Hussey gave each group an ice tube of the same size. We put them in the iceboxes that were placed side by side on the table. Then we left for home, hoping that we would win.
The next day, everybody rushed towards these works of art. We all hoped that there would still be some ice left. Some kids searched and searched, and were even about to tear their iceboxes apart, but couldn’t find anything. Luckily, it turned out that we didn’t do too badly. Having almost 60 percent of the ice cube still remaining, we had an above-average result! The winner of the competition, however, was the guy who made a motorized refrigerator. When we opened his icebox, he had a piece of ice that was 140 percent the size of the original! His innovative design was definitely a cut above the rest.
