When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life. I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.
24.What was the author’s life like when he was 12
A.Boring. B.Peaceful. C.Painful. D.Meaningful.

A.He was inspired by his teacher.
B.He could pass positive energy to readers.
C.He wanted to share his school experiences.
D.He found he had a talent for writing.
27.What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph
A.Say “no” to bullies bravely.
B.Make positive changes in their lives.
C.Treat others with kindness in daily life.
D.Learn to care more about others’ feelings.

Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.

A.He lost his science textbook. B.He was late for math class.
C.He got lost on the campus. D.He was given detention.
29.What did the author think of his art class
A.Difficult. B.Easy. C.Boring. D.Enjoyable.
30.What did the English teacher do after seeing the author’s work

B.He pointed out the author’s mistake.
C.He asked the author to check punctuation.
D.He encouraged the author to introduce himself.
31.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Learn useful skills in high school B.My new teachers in high school
C.Make plans for high school life D.My first day in high school

How to Encourage a Teenager to Take up a Hobby
Having a hobby can greatly enrich a teenager’s life. Hobbies can increase physical activity and social interaction, provide stress relief and teach valuable skills. 36 Even so, you can use some gentle guidance to help your teens to explore their interests and find their perfect hobbies.
You can ask your teens what makes them feel good about themselves. 37 Many teens may only focus on weaknesses or things they have failed at. So what you should do is pay attention to what they are good at.
You can determine if your teens already participate in hobbies. Teenagers spend much of their life away from the eyes of parents and don’t always offer up information. As a result, sometimes adults are not entirely aware that teenagers are developing hobbies. Your children may be developing hobbies away from home, so you may not have to encourage them to adopt new ones. 38
39 After brainstorming(头脑风暴),have your teens write down a list of interests they would like to pursue or be curious about. Then, have the teens rank the interests on a scale from 1 to 10,with 1 being most likely to try and 10 being least likely.
You can analyze the teens’ personality. A person’s personality can help them figure out their hobbies or interests. 40 What are their character traits(特点) What things do they get in trouble for doing What do they tend to The answers can help them come up with ideas.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon of hers to defeat my strange problem, my inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle(小猎兔狗).I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone. It was given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked like my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, “Amos, the Beagle with a Plan.” Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about the dog. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated(分开) from his family and finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story my mind continued to the final scene of reunion(重逢的场景), on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.
My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something.

第二节(满分25分)
My mother’s call returned me to the real world .I suddenly realized something. The trick of reading is to put yourself into the story experiencing what the author goes through and appreciating its meaning in your heart. As long as I clung to this process, not only was my inability to read defeated, but also an inner aspiration to read was stimulated, which changed my life for the better. During the summer, I incredibly developed a special companionship with books, ranging from vivid storybooks to academic articles. My mother was more than delighted to see my change.
And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, and was awarded a PhD in literature. She proposed that my experience should be of magnificent use to others. So I set up a team to provide those who had difficulty reading with space to turn to, through which I myself also gained a better understanding of reading as well as my life. My first adventure of reading turned out to be a permanent treasure.
